Your dream classic cars

Classics don't have to be rough and tough at all. They don't even have to be particularly good looking.

Basically they just have to be over a certain age and desirable to some people or a certain group of people for them to be considered a classic. Sometimes they are desirable for a certain trait that makes them unique.

Old school Jag's, Porsche's certainly aren't classified as "rough and tough".

Then you also see cars like Austin Healey bug eyed sprites which certainly aren't attractive to everyone, but some people really like them.

Even cars that were really common, like Holden HK's or HQ's are now considered classic by some. It really just depends on your outlook and what you find desirable.

Two classic cars that no one would find desirable (possibly other than me)

The Austin Allegro - voted worst car ever made in Britain. I learnt to drive in one of these. a 1.3 litre engine (A series engine) which was basically the same engine first put in a Morris Minor is 1956. It was, to put it politely an utter piece of junk. It handled poorly, had no power, the suspension wallowed and the build quality was dubious at best.

It's top speed (downhill with wind assistance) was 70 miles per hour and at that speed the car had a habit of jumping into neutral. My dad gave the All-Agro away 2 years ago and I'm yet to forgive him. I had visions of driving the length of Britan in it, visiting places where things had gone spectacularly wrong in the UK as an homage to failure. Learn to drive one of these spastics and you can pretty much find anything else endearing and simple to drive.

PS Yes. Ours was poo brown.

The Hilman Avenger.
This was the car (in this colour) that my father owned when I was born. Well, when I say it was in this colour it also had huge rust patches on it when it was just a few years old. The Avenger was actually a decent car for it's time and rivalled Ford's Escort. It handled well, had a modern look (including the first ever plastic grill on a European production car) and was well received in the media. However it had chronic rust issues and these surfaced just a few years later. It wasn't really very powerful either with a 1275cc version as the mainstay.

There was a 1500cc TIGER version - below

but 1500cc wasn't exactly a ball tearer even by the mid 70's standards.
But it was up against the Allegro and Marina by Leyland and the Viva by Vauxhall, so as long as it was better than utter crap, it was probably going to sell

The death of the Rootes group saw the demise of the Avenger and not before time.

Still, I'd love to get a decent body shell and put something like a 1.6 injected engine in there to see what the car could have been like had someone at Rootes had half an ounce of brains.

But it's hard to build a car using a body that is 99% rust or holes where metal used to be.

Always been partial to the 67/68 Camaro's. Currently restoring a 78 F100, not sure if that's classed as a car though.

6 years ago I started off with this

Now it looks like this

Hopefully its on the road by June.

What they say about old cars is pretty true. You can get them driving nicely, but compared to a modern car they are pretty agricultural. Mine now has air ride, 4 link rear, OD Box, Injected big block with alloy heads, rhd with power steer, A/C, power windows, seats etc etc.

Why is it in Manly colours? Is there something you're not telling us? :sarcasm:

Currently working on a hq Monaro gts coupe. Also have a ls model in original condition. Was always my childhood dream to own a coupe, now I have two.

If I can figure out how to upload pics, I'll put a couple up

Set up a photobucket account. Once you upload pics you can click the share button & it links them to wherever you want. I'm not really a big Holden fan, but I do like the HQ Monaro.

The V5's would look tough on the GTS. Are you going to keeps the LS original? Brown with Vinyl isn't the sexiest combo, but it is nice to see a stocker still surviving.

A mother flipping DeLorean. Of course with a replica or if possible a legitimate Flux capacitor lol.

I'm dead serious.

I also like the old batmobile. A few years ago I tried to pick up a batmobile kit car. Too much effort to get it roadworthy though.

Whilst not exactly an old/ classic I've always had. Soft spot for the Nissan 300zx. What they could do was crazy for that period of time

Have a new set of b45's for the gts, just waiting for the final touches. Yes the brown one will Be Staying original. Ironically the Orange gts Was originally brown too. But I always wanted a highly modified orange coupe with Simmons and 355 stroker.

It's running a turbo 350 with 9 inch diff. Engine isn't over kill as I wanted it streetable. Just a nice solid cruiser.

Also, the brown coupe is running gold v5's.

Yeah, I saw the V5s on the brown one. They are my favorite wheel ever. I had to run OM's on the Mustang as the biggest V5's are 16" & they wouldn't clear the rotors. Has the LS got a vinyl roof or is it just the angle of the photo?

Same, same.

Although, my wedding car was this

p9081638_241109_174921.jpg

Or one that looked just like it

FJ Holden 1956 with a V8 Chevrolet engine
The V8 engine was too heavy for the FJ frame so the FJ body was mounted on a Torana chassis

The V8 was a cracker - it was so loud we set off car alarms driving down Castlereagh Street lol

Just checked the car more closely - that is the exact one. I want it now.

FJ's are cool, I quite like all the early stuff up to EH. HD's & R's dont really do it for me. The old man had a HD Prem X2 back when I was a kid. I wouldnt mind that one back in the family though.

The early stuff dont have a chassis as such, we used to use HR crossmembers & a Torana steering rack when putting V8's in old Holdens. The Subframe (chassis sort of) remains from the original car.
