Chances of second Brisbane NRL team remain a long-term prospect

THE Broncos wanted to quieten the clamour in Sydney for a second Brisbane NRL team, it was not a great idea to put 31 points on the minor premiers in a preliminary final.

Queenslander John Grant, chairman of the ARL Commission, made ears prick up last week when he declared another southeast Queensland team would be at the head of the queue for the next NRL premiership expansion berth.
Grant said the Queensland marketplace is “not being taken advantage of’’ by rugby league with three NRL clubs.
Broncos chairman Dennis Watt says Sydney critics keen to see the club no longer have the city to themselves do not give credit for how much work goes into drawing spectators to Suncorp Stadium and helping to build the game in Queensland
“Expansion is a legitimate question for the game, but it’s premature because we have to make sure we have a competition, that it has 16 strong clubs that can stand on their own feet,’’ Watt said.
“If the consideration for expansion (to include a second Brisbane club) is to reduce the capacity of the Broncos it’s entirely the wrong premise.
“We’ve won one competition in 15 years and in that time we’ve never lost sight of the need to invest in our responsibilities to the game, to promote and develop the game.’’
Watt said he had noted NRL CEO David Smith had reiterated in a recent Sydney media report that he was mindful of “financial structure and the impact on the rest of the competition’’ from expansion.
The Courier-Mail understands the NRL currently views expansion to 18 clubs as a subsequent step after it has first invested in improving the second-tier competitions, Queensland’s Intrust Super Cup and NSW Cup.
There is provision for expansion to 17 or 18 clubs from 2018 in the NRL’s contract with Channel 9.
NRL head of strategy Shane Richardson’s review of rugby league’s competitions structure is likely to be tabled in December.
“The claim is we have this massive area from which to develop, but the other clubs have been recruiting from Queensland for decades,’’ he said.
“Sixteen NRL clubs is what’s been sold to Channel 9 and potentially to pay television. From there, a circle operates where the grassroots are looked after well, but the elite competition must be healthy and viable.’’

I fail to see the fascination of a 2nd Brisbane team.
We already had 2 Brisbane teams back in 1995 with the South Qld Crushers that failed miserably and were financially unsustainable and competitively unsuccessful.
The Gold Coast are roughly 80ks up the road and are failing in their 4th or 5th ?? attempt.
A 2nd team in Brisbane won't take the game anywhere new it would just slightly weaken the Bronco's.
Am I missing something ? other than the NRL's obsession of playing more than once every 2 weeks at Suncorp for $$$ & ratings until the bubble bursts.

You realise that was 20 years ago right? There were a lot of clubs failing at that time.

It's 2015 and Sydney of all places has two AFL teams!

And why does a second Brisbane team have to weaken the Broncos? Surely what everyone would like to see is two clubs in Brisbane both drawing capacity crowds in Suncorp.

I agree with the NRL's approach - we've got to get the second tier competitions right first - but surely the time has come for a second Brisbane side.

How relatively intelligent people should approach news limited and the courier mail.

If the CM or NL suggest something, take the opposite approach.

If the CM or NL suggest something is bad, then it is good.

If the CM or NL suggest something is good then it is most definately very bad.

Before the SL disaster hit the game the SQ Crushers drew a crowd avg of 21k! That would put them in the top 3 supported clubs in the NRL today!! Their highest crowd was in 1996 against the Broncos with over 34k attending. I don't get why people say they were a failure? Anything post 95-98 is so off the norm scale due to the explosion of RL and the SL war that you cant count it as anything like a reliable barometer of how things would be now.

On the field is pretty irrelevant as any club can build a winning team these days.

If the Broncos want no expansion until all 16 clubs are financially strong then it is going to take a very very very long time to see the game grow!

If you had to compare the broncos to an afl counterpart it'd probably be the west coast Eagles. Early success, big following, hatred for the Melbourne/sydney teams, their promotion really hurt the local comp. When fremantle first came into the comp they initially found it hard to gain traction, most west australians saw them as inferior to the Eagles and basically were just the second favourite team in wa. Slowly they started to build a small but comiited following, the rivalry between the Eagles become heated and after a little bit of on field sucess they've become a strong club in their own right. People think the crushers failed because of no interest, but conviently forget the exclusivity contract news limited made when the super league and the arl were negotiating on the new nrl comp. It was news Ltd and broncos who killed of the crushers. If crushers had been allowed to stay in the comp, build on that 21k crowd average and maybe had some on field sucess maybe rugby league in Queensland might be even stronger than it is now.

yep I think the parallels with afl in perth are very true and no reason another NRL team cant do what the dockers have done. Rather than weakening the Eagles the Eagles are stronger than ever and Freo have created a strong corporate and supporter fanbase for themselves. Shame they couldn't beat Hawthorne, an all Perth GF would have seen the city go mental!

A 2nd Brisbane team has the potential to be one fot he strongest clubs in NRL, add significantly tot he media value of the NRL and create a rivalry with the Broncos that will see the Broncos have to lift their game and get even more RL fans engaged with the NRL in the Brisbane region. Realy the Broncos are coasting a bit compared to the Eagles and need to lift their game to be filling Suncorp.

WS Wanderers/SydneyFC are probably the best comparison, especially if the NRL wants the new Brisbane team to target support in Ipswich/Logan to create that socio-economic based rivalry.

I just hope that the NRL follows the FFA's lead and holds a lot of fan forums in deciding how to setup/run the new club and keeps it community focussed.

The NRL really can't afford to f**k it up and it needs to be successful and fan-backed from day one if they want any hope in legitimately challenging the Broncos.

Thats why it has to be a club with substance like Brothers NRL and not a plastic fantastic copy of the Broncos like the Bombers.

I'm all for a 2nd Brisbane team... the Broncos will get nervous as the new wave will have another place to aim for ;-)

As long as the talent isn't going to cradle robbing clubs like Roosters and Manly and stays in QLD I'm okay. Still grieving over the loss of Nikorima and Matt Parcell.

Yeah I'd back Brothers over Bombers. Great history and an already established following as well. Ipswich is cool too but I prefer a club with a successful premiership winning history.

The only time that the Broncos had an exclusive area that they were guaranteed no other teams would be in SE QLD was when they first started, hence why the initial GC team played out of Tweed (NSW not SE QLD).

The Crushers were shit. 13 wins, 1 draw and 51 losses over three seasons.

They chose not to merge which was there only chance of staying alive.

They had millions of dollars of debts.

And the 'build off 21k crowd average'

First season - 21k
Second season - 13k
Third season - 7k  And that's with the gates open

Your entire post is incorrect.

Brisbane Broncos lost More fans in that same period than the crushers!
1995 35,902
1996 23,712
1997 19,298

Every club by end of 97 was millions in debt, the war broke everyone with its ridiculous hike in salaries and costs. You are a fool if your Going to judge the potential of a club in 2017 to the historic abnomaly that was 1995-1997.

When did I judge anything?

I just pointed out where the other guy was wrong.

By the end, there was no cost to get into the Crushers games. People weren't interested in them.

Probably had a lot more to do with people walking away from the game rather than the club. Take a look at crowds around the country in that period, by and large the sane thing happened everywhere.

Warriors went from 26k to less than 9k
Newcastle 21k to 14k
Canberra 17k to under 10k
Etc etc
