Chances of second Brisbane NRL team remain a long-term prospect
THE Broncos wanted to quieten the clamour in Sydney for a second Brisbane NRL team, it was not a great idea to put 31 points on the minor premiers in a preliminary final.
Queenslander John Grant, chairman of the ARL Commission, made ears prick up last week when he declared another southeast Queensland team would be at the head of the queue for the next NRL premiership expansion berth.
Grant said the Queensland marketplace is not being taken advantage of by rugby league with three NRL clubs.
Broncos chairman Dennis Watt says Sydney critics keen to see the club no longer have the city to themselves do not give credit for how much work goes into drawing spectators to Suncorp Stadium and helping to build the game in Queensland
Expansion is a legitimate question for the game, but its premature because we have to make sure we have a competition, that it has 16 strong clubs that can stand on their own feet, Watt said.
If the consideration for expansion (to include a second Brisbane club) is to reduce the capacity of the Broncos its entirely the wrong premise.
Weve won one competition in 15 years and in that time weve never lost sight of the need to invest in our responsibilities to the game, to promote and develop the game.
Watt said he had noted NRL CEO David Smith had reiterated in a recent Sydney media report that he was mindful of financial structure and the impact on the rest of the competition from expansion.
The Courier-Mail understands the NRL currently views expansion to 18 clubs as a subsequent step after it has first invested in improving the second-tier competitions, Queenslands Intrust Super Cup and NSW Cup.
There is provision for expansion to 17 or 18 clubs from 2018 in the NRLs contract with Channel 9.
NRL head of strategy Shane Richardsons review of rugby leagues competitions structure is likely to be tabled in December.
The claim is we have this massive area from which to develop, but the other clubs have been recruiting from Queensland for decades, he said.
Sixteen NRL clubs is whats been sold to Channel 9 and potentially to pay television. From there, a circle operates where the grassroots are looked after well, but the elite competition must be healthy and viable.
