Yellow cards for deliberate penalties.

There seems to be a huge increase in the last few years of teams deliberately giving away penalties, usually to get your defence set when your own your own tryline. While these are professional fouls and should be dealt with by a sin binning, it seems refs are to afraid to drop a team down to 12 players so only sin bin in try scoring situations (and even then it's 50/50). Maybe a system worth looking at is a yellow card system similar to soccer, in that if a ref feels you have deliberately given away a penalty (or keep giving away the same kind of penalty) he can give you a yellow card. Two yellow cards in a game equals time in the bin (extended to 15 minutes, 10 is to short, 20 to long). The cards can be accumulated from different games so that when you get 5 it's a one game suspension, another 5 after that is 3 game suspension, another 5 after that is 6 game suspension. Come the finals there's an amnesty and everyone goes back to zero as it would be unfair for a player to miss a semi or grandfinal for a yellow card given away in the early rounds. Sin bins would still be in place for professional fouls in a try scoring situation. Also yellow cards could be given for talking back to a ref, throwing balls at other players heads, general merkin behaviour that starts those ridiculous looking 'melees' and for slapping players.

"give em the cheese"

just think how much fun it can be for fans to start yelling that out..

and maybe fling the occasional kraft singles out onto the pitch when players aren't sin binned like they should be..

except for bulldogs fans, who'd throw whole wheels of jarlsberg..

Better still if a referee thinks a penalty deliberate, which most near the tryline are, wait until the set is finished which means momentum is not interrupted before awarding the penalty . . . not hard to figure out deliberate penalties are designed to halt momentum

I'm in full support of this

Just think of all the great puns and banter that could be had

The game could use a bit more banter in it

They should have the chance cards from Monopoly.

After a while though I think the souffs players would all get the go to jail cards.

They've got to do something about it.

Canterbury were having a laugh tonight. Whenever Melbourne were on top they'd concede the penalty.

I agree with the Chance cards from monopoly. Have 6 cards, 3 are nothing happens, 1 is five minutes in bin, 1 in a ten minute sin bin and the last one is a send off. Imagine the lulz if someone pulled the send off in the first 5 minutes

Or you know get the referees to use the sin bin and send off more.

It amazes me that the amount of tackles that happen today that are just placed on report today that would have been automatic send offs in the 70s & 80s - a renowned period full of thugs.

Im on board with the uno draw 4 card but as an addendum they lose a player but get 4 members of the crowd (drawn at random) to fill in on the field.

Big part of the problem is that every time this debate happens, the media peddles the myth that "10 mins is too big an impact in the modern game"

It's not. And even if it is, tough shit, don't give away deliberate penalties.

Deliberate penalties - aka professional fouls aka cheating - should be 10 mins in the bin.

Violent play that results in the victim injured or concussed should be a send off.

We don't need rule changes, we need the current rules to be actually enforced.
