And they named the Panthers as a club that's overspent? And they had definitive proof of said cap expenditure?

Believe what exactly? Your unfounded claims that Penrith have exceeded the cap for next year already...? Yeah, nah, I'm good thanks :)

There have been reports in various outlets that Penrith may be one club that has overspent expecting a higher salary cap then what has been proposed, so are not just his unfounded claims.

"Penrith for example have been on a high profile retention drive on the understanding they would have $10 million dollars to spend under the cap."

the bigger story out of all this is that clubs like PENRITH will be forced to shed players because they've gone out and re-signed their roster to a cap figure nowhere close to what the nrl are going to approve for 2018.

You're a Parramatta supporter aren't you?

Fair enough - Can't say I believe it without proof, but that could just be my untrusting nature

Anyway, thanks for the debate gents :)

the only proof you'd be satisfied with anyway is if gus admitted as such and that isn't going to happen.

hence my original call no-one gives a flying hyena if you choose to believe it or not.

Don't the NRL just fine clubs for being over the cap?

I mean unless they specifically set out to cheat the cap by hiding player payments.

Otherwise if your over you just cop a fine. So where is the issue? Clubs sign players to 10 million and the cap comes out at 8.8 million or whatever. Said clubs get fined. Thats it.

Not if you are 1 million over the cap, they will have to be cap compliant before the season starts. Most cap breaches are for 2nd tier salary cap or bonus payments.

here's a question for you...

how will you react then when corey harawera nera's forced to move clubs coz there's no cap space left to compete with the money offered to him to go elsewhere for 2018? :)
Hes off contract... and wasnt part of our top 25 at the start of this year.

If we lose him shit happens. Hes a decent player but not part of our top 17. At another club he might be. I think a regular NRL spot would convince him to leave.

The NRL must cop a fair share of the blame if the cap is a blowout for many teams. And should help clubs resolve it without having to use punitive measures, if at all possible.

To not have the cap this far into the season before it is to be implemented is outrageous. It should be known years in advance.

The farce timeline:

Nov 2015 tv deal done
Dec 2015 in principal club grant agreement signed giving clubs 130% of cap
Oct 2016 nrl finally decides how it wants to slice the pie and reneges on club grant deal to put more into grass roots and digital strategy
Feb 2017 nrl backs down after threat to grants position and pulls money out of grassroots funding to pay clubs what they want
Apr 2017 stil no player agreement

the source is on fox. it's been for all to see.
The other night on Fox they (Ikin and Rothfield) suggested that because Penrith had dropped three players for what (to Ikin and Rothfield) appeared minor matters, that there had to be more to it and therefore the club has deeper issues. Moylan in particular must have done something wrong before this. No evidence to support this assertion was offered whatsoever.

A couple of weeks ago the Bulldogs were in crisis and Hasler was about to be sacked. Until they beat the Broncos when it stopped as though shot. Before that Wayne Bennett had "lost the dressing room".

This is the sort of journalism that NRL360 specialises in. They have to in order to provide themselves something to talk about three nights a week.

Now lets just say Penrith have spent $10 million next year, despite this year's cap being $7 million and despite them not having signed a single player from outside the club. It is now April and the cap for 2018 has not yet been determined. How are the NRL going to sit legally attempting to fine or otherwise sanction Penrith or anyone else who has acted in good faith on the basis of previous statements from the governing body? I'd suggest very shakily indeed.

its been brought up a few times the last couple of weeks on foxsports.

but fundamentally:

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...n-out-the-nrls-dead-wood-20170405-gveadu.html

the NRL has proposed an $8.85 million salary cap for 2018 and some clubs have already budgeted – even committed – to up to $10 million.

some clubs = the one with the most of their roster resigned = penrith

Yep. Gus having a massive sook to the media about inflated player salarues just now.

Has the nrl actually ever said they think it will be $10mill?

That was media speculation driven by clubs who were rubbing their hands at the 130% deal, the bigger the salary cap the more money in the clubs back pockets.

that's not true, the bigger the nrl GRANT the bigger the salary cap.

the issue is that the cap could not be determined until the clubs knew what their grant was going to be. they've now had to digest a figure they're not happy with, and are now waiting on the rlpa to negotiate a cap figure where the difference is paid wholesly and solely by the club. some clubs are fine with the final cap figure being higher eg penrith some not so much eg knights titans etc

Who have they resigned? Whare, Watene-Zelezniak, who else? I can't think of too many. Certainly no big-money spine players. These signings would add $3m to the club's salary bill?
