Dragons win big across the ditch

The St George Illawarra Dragons have amended a three-game losing run by beating the New Zealand Warriors 30-14 at FMG Stadium, Hamilton on Friday night.

While the double-centurion Warrior Ben Matulino had the scoring underway in the fourth minute, the Dragons would follow that up with one of the team tries of the year.

It came in the 19th minute and started from a simple Nene Macdonald scoot 35 metres out from the Dragons own line. The winger was able to offload to his counterpart Kalifa Faifai Loa.

Once trouble found Faifai Loa he passed on to centre Tim Lafai who quickly passed it back to the dual international as he scored in the corner.

The Dragons backed up their first try with another to Joel Thompson four minutes later after he shrugged off plenty of would-be Warriors defenders.

A Lafai penalty goal followed in the 27th minute, before some Josh McCrone magic allowed the centre to back it up with another four points in the 32nd minute.

Thompson's failure to pick up a grubber just before half-time allowed Warriors winger Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad to score, with the Dragons maintaining a slender 18-10 lead at the break.

The Dragons found first points in the second stanza when Macdonald capitalised in the corner in the 50th minute following a long-winding run from rookie forward Hame Sele.

Faifai Loa found his second try in the 59th minute when some risky offloading from Lafai found Jason Nightingale, who was able to put his winger away.

Taane Milne had reason to celebrate – other than his 22nd birthday – when he took it upon himself from dummy half to score his first ever NRL try in the 65th minute.

A late try to Nicoll-Klokstad would have no impact on the final result, a 16-point win to the Dragons.

St George Illawarra Dragons 30 (Kalifa Faifai Loa 2, Joel Thompson, Tim Lafai, Nene Macdonald, Taane Milne tries; Tim Lafai 3 goals) defeated New Zealand Warriors 14 (Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad 2, Ben Matulino tries; Shaun Johnson goal) at FMG Stadium, Hamilton. Half-time: Dragons 18-10.

Most satisfying to watch our boys rip the Warriors to shreds , with the forwards making the metres like butter . And what about the Speed - Speed and more Speed of that backline .
The backs had a license to roam and the tries came . The big smile on Milne's face said it all . Great work boys , a real, pleasure to watch , the sky the limit now for the Big Red V .

I can't believe we played Mann once at fullback, ONLY ONCE, and have done everything we can to try and not play him there again. He is so light footed, strong quick passing game, glides across the field. If Dugan goes Mann would be a great replacement...needs to beef up a little more but solid potential for fullback!

Mann's price is going up by the minute. Great game from him tonight.

Well done boys. Imagine if we played like that with Widdop out there putting on some tries and a good kicking game. We were 7 mtrs short of 2000 mtrs gained according to nrl.com, awesome effort.
Mcdonald played out of his skin and Milne was everywhere, hope to see them both for the rest of the year.
Our forwards again were top notch even without a lot of help from McCrone and McInnes who had a rather poor outing.

I think it was 2 or 3 games in his first season with us. But deserves another crack at it for all money

Forwards strong again(not much to beat as the Warriors are woeful). Mann & Lafai had strong games. My only criticisms are McCrones kicking game & Field getting 8 minutes. He would have run rings around those lazy Warriors & built some confidence. When Widdop & Dugan come back look out.
