Recommended reading for future comics, would read again, but the laughter hasn't subsided.

Most commercial interests of any major size are domiciled in the big cities of this country, not a rural inland city which relies on public servants and politicians.Raiders to Adelaide sounds fine.

who said our interests are confined to Canberra dummy ?

NRL reeping what it has sowed. Allowing TV to dictate 2 Friday games since 2007, Thursday and Monday night games at unfriendly times for younger families and children and KO times advertised for 7:45/50 not starting til after 8. kids introduced from 2007 would be teenagers now and in a few years have a disposable income.

What happened to Sunday games in wk2/3 of the finals? They were dropped in favour of a twilight GF and then the spineless merkins reverted to night GF's and kept the Friday/Saturday games.

Very true. Im ok with the Friday and Saturday finals although could live with Saturday evening Sunday arvo. The Grand final is the doozy though. A rival code has its Gf in daylight hours and outrated the nightime Gf of the NRL last season. Surely the reasoning behind the nightime gf is flawed and doesnt help our games exposure to the very young! Its crazy business acumen! With no regard for future development to boot.

NRL expecting 35-40k at Suncorp & 20-25k at ANZ.

Can't wait until this season is over, it's been like pulling teeth all year with all the off field distractions taking over from the actual game on the field.

The night time move, generally ruined the GF day for me to the point where by the time the game roles around i cannot be particularly bothered to watch. Very damaging as well in that many kids will now not get to see the marquee game of the season which long term is less rusted on fans.

knowing our luck the Cows & Panthers will get up this weekend ( no offence to the fans of those sides )
meaning Allianz will get around 30K instead of 42K , I maintain it should be at ANZ if against the eels & we're getting 60K. We'd be the only code in this country willing to deny people an opportunity to attend our games , but what else would we expect from this present admin.

Penrith at AAMI it won't make too much of a difference though
28K for them , 30K for the Broncos
Cronks last game in Melbourne & all ... should be at or near capacity regardless

The Manly-Penrith game would have drawn a bigger crowd at Penrith, but of course it was Manly's home final. The Sharks match likewise, and it was their home final. The NRL should consider using Penrith, Cronulla and maybe Wollongong/Kogarah in week 1 where it is considered these grounds would draw a better crowd than the bigger joints. Not Brookvale though, it is just a shithole.

Its a f**king final! Get the f**k out there! It was once the norm that finals matches were centralised and fans turned up. I'm all for finals being played at home venues, but until they make them all seater and have a capacity greater than 30k, then the major venues it should be. The game should be striving to be greater.

Playing these matches at SFS or Homebush Bay Oval (if Penrith or Parra host them) gives the match a finals vibe.

The shit crowds are due to more than Manly, Penrith and Cronulla fans avoiding the city. There are multiple issues which have festered and created apathy among supporters.

The NRL schedule with too many games at fan unfriendly times.
The inconsistency in officiating and the constant reviews which keep stopping the game rather than allowing it to move along.
The regular season dying once Origin begins.
Too many games which means matches aren't an event.

There are more, but basically there are a myriad of problems with the game, and most of them were caused by the NRL spreading their legs wider than a king cross whore for the broadcasters. The extra coin they got was always going to be a slippery slope to dwindling crowds. Make it easier for merkins not to attend, then the routine sets in.

Friday night seems a good fit for the Melbourne game to draw a good crowd and won't conflict with the big game scheduled for Saturday afternoon. I would expect a little more if it were to be against the Broncos than Panthers, little more rivalry there.

And with the amount of stoppages now, a game finishes later than what it once did.

Thing is, AFL night matches will finish after 10pm and it doesn't affect them as much. I went to an NFL Sunday night football match a few years ago between Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets at Meadowlands in New Jersey. Match started at 8:30pm finished at 11:30pm and then had to travel back to Manhattan getting back there at 12:30am.

The difference between the NRL and these two other sports is that the bulk of their weekly schedule is at fan friendly times. The NFL start only two of their 16 weekly matches at night. The AFL only play night matches on 1x friday night, and 2x saturday night. 3 games out of 9. They have a month long of thursday night matches in the middle of the season, but they haven't made it a season-long staple in the fixture. They flirted with sunday night matches for 3 or 4 matches one season and one of them was Collingwood vs Carlton which drew only 40k (normally get above 70k), so then they've canned it since.

In contrast, the NRL will sign a 5-yr deal without a get out clause for the time slot, and so they're stuck with it and the 70K empty seats in the stadium for the duration of that period. Looks like shit and doesn't evoke a desire to get to the game.
