That year a grand final seemed realistic considering we played the Bulldogs. We should have beaten them.
I remember that year Ivan said it was surreal to be playing the Roosters in a 1 v 4 final. This was the problem. Even though we won that game, the team didn't believe they belonged in the big games. The Bulldogs were old hands at it, and they did believe they belonged there. That final was lost in the mind, not on the field.

It's pretty amusing to see the Hook fan club putting shit on 2010. Top 4, robbed week 1 against Canberra then decimated by injury against the eventual grand finalists in week 2. Also beat the eventual premiers at their home ground. Yes we scored a heap from kicks, and Walsh kicking aside was a flat track bully. There were a few games he played well overall, but only ever against weak opposition when the forwards dominated. (kind of the area most halves shine in) I may be in the minority, but I think we were more chance in 2010 than 2017.

On Walsh, he was so frustrating. His kicking game was excellent. It was helped by the fantastic kick chase from the rest of the team, but to take all credit away from him for being on point is unfair. His defence on the other hand was nothing short of disgraceful and pea hearted. His general play was the most frustrating part. He did have decent vision and a good running game on the rare occasion he had the balls to use it. If you could put Peter Wallaces heart in his sickly little chest he would have been a pretty good halfback.

The highs were great. The lows were shit. Same as any year.

We were knocked out in the second week of finals under Elliott. Same with Hook. Sucks equally.

We were one game from a grand final with Cleary though. Injuries cost us.
Agree.......Elliott put his own squad together. What all the Griffin lovers forget is Gus built all Griffins squad + Griffin has a 25 million dollar COE which is an advantage over all the other NRL teams.

We won 0 finals games under Elliott. Regardless of where we finished that is bad
That is bad (who said otherwise?) But its still as successful as Hook has been. Eliminated week 2 is the end of season regardless of the 25 games before it.

We have won 1 game from 12 against top 4 sides under Hook. That's why we arent a premiership threat.

1 from 7 in 2016
0 from 5 in 2017

Thats pretty bad. Elliott was a shit coach for us. Without doubt. But he still took us as far in the finals as Hook has. He just did so by winning more regular season matches.

Total wins (including finals)
15 games in 2010 under Elliott. Eliminated week 2.
16 games in 2014 under Cleary. Eliminated week 3.
15 games in 2016 under Hook. Eliminated week 2
14 games in 2017 under Hook. Eliminated week 2

Unless we make the top 4 its impossible to make week 3 of finals without beating a top 4 side. 5-8th have to face the loser of the top 4 matches and that's where we've failed twice under Hook.

Where has anyone said we are premiership threat? We may never be under hook. Hell may not be under the next coach. The argument has been we are no worse off then we were before.

I think if RCG and Blake or Whare play v Canberra we win in 2016.

Same last year Blake plays. May doesn't go down.. Of course Moylan we beat Broncos.

2014 and 2010 still copped injuries too so same could be said for those years.

The big difference is backing it up the next season instead of the down years.

Aside from that we haven't been a true contender since 2004.

It's been pretty obvious people are saying we are much better now.

If you could put Peter Wallaces heart in his sickly little chest he would have been a pretty good halfback.
And then add Brandy's balance, Burn's mongrel, Wesser's speed, Girdlers hair and Mansours muscles and you have a handsome halfback who can run fast, glides like a gazelle, has the heart of a lion, bench presses small family cars and who starts a fight in a phone box with a nun.

Frankenwalsh, Penrith's best halfback ever.....

We didnt win... and we have an 8% win rate against top 4 teams so theres a better than average chance we weren't winning those games under any top 17. Because no matter what 17 we have. They play to Hooks game plans. This genius took a fit hooker off to put Wallace back out there... that decision alone could have been the difference between winning and losing. It without doubt made the team worse... and Hook CHOSE to make it worse. Everyone on the planet could see we were better once Wallace went off. Except Hook.

We are worse off than we were before though. We arent a premiership threat at all. At the dnd of the day everyones goal is a premiership. Or it should be. Under Cleary we were a legitimate threat. I doubt he wins us one either. Elliott definitely never would But I back Cleary to ever get closer than Hook will. But close still isnt good enough. Its still a failure. We built a top 4 side with the best depth in the competition and it's being pissed away under a coach who has won 8% of his games against top 4 teams since being here.

Our depth has taken a huge hit and our top 17 is now weaker also. This premiership window is being wasted under a coach who clearly isnt good enough. He wasnt good enough for the Broncos. No other team wanted him... well Tigers were interested in him until meeting with him and seeing how f**king clueless and unprepared he was.

Hook was brought here in Year 5 of Goulds 5 year plan. The roster was top 4 capable. The depth was experienced and hardened. Gould didnt look at anyone else. He just sacked Cleary and handed over 5 years of hard work to Hook.

Des Hasler made 2 grand finals with inferior sides to ours and the Bulldogs didn't accept that as successful.
Craig Bellamy would never look back at week 3 of finals and think that was a successful season.

There bar is set way too low for where we are in Goulds 5 year plan. We should have been looking at week 3 of finals minimum last year and a grand final this year. Instead we actually won less games than 2016, were eliminated in the same week of finals and even at our best weren't close to our 2016 form.

You wouldn't have Katoa or Egan in Firsts for a back up hooker?

I posted our general win record and top 8 win.. Showing we are better now then the last 10 years. People listen to what they want I guess.
The rebuild was complete when Hook took over. Ofcourse his first 2 seasons were better than the ones where Ivan and Gus rebuilt our team from the ground up.

The issue is our complete rebuild has gotten no closer to a premiership than even Elliott did when the club was a mess and has been further away than when Ivan was rebuilding it.

We should have higher standards 5 years after the club has been rebuilt. With all the money and resources put into the team. All the money spent on the likes of Merrin, Tamou and now Maloney.

But no... scraping into the finals is somehow acceptable. Winning less games than the previous yesr with a supposedly stronger roster. Losing 100% of the games against top 4 teams in 2017. Pissing away our premiership window being a fringe top 8 team. Under Hook we are making up the numbers. Thats not good enough.

Hooks Finals Achievements:

2011 - Broncos finished 3rd
2011 week 1: defeat 6th
2011 week 2: defeat 5th
2011 week 3: eliminated by 2nd

2012 - Broncos finished 8th
2012 week 1: eliminated by 5th

2013 - Broncos finished 12th

2014 - Broncos finished 8th
2014 week 1: eliminated by 5th

2015 - Not employed

2016 - Panthers finished 6th
2016 week 1: defeat 7th
2016 week 2: eliminated by 2nd

2017 - Panthers finished 7th
2017 week 1: defeat 6th
2017 week 2: eliminated by 3rd

He coached a powerhouse club like the Broncos and they were only a fringe top 8 side. He coaches us after a complete rebuild and we're the same.

Does anyone honestly believe he can win us a premiership?

8% against top 4 sides at Panthers.
0% against them in finals series.

Outside of the great Lockyer, his teams have finished 8th, 12th, 8th, 6th and 7th. Scraping into finals or missing out. He's a fringe top 8 specialist.

.

Everything he has done here has been completely consistent with his stint at Brisbane including the falling out with players.

The bold stats are why I am so sick and tired of hearing about us making It to the top 8 two years in a row off the back of two of the softest draws we could ask for, we cant beat good teams, we are flat track bullies and we went backwards last year and still extended him, its jobs for the boys at Penrith still.

Goulds 7 year rebuild has us as a mediocre side the last two years with not much prospect of getting better this year and we still have uncertainty surrounding key positions going forward, but hey apparently we are building(by releasing more talent then any other club).

Yeah while weve had lower points at many times through our history. We've done a complete rebuild and invested millions in what should be making us become a powerhouse club.

But we have a coach whose teams are simply making up the numbers. If youre not a premiership threat capable of beating top 4 teams. You're just making up the numbers.

Yes 7th is better than 10th. But come grand finzl day youre still watching other teams play.
