How do Minor Premiers fare in the finals?

1998 Brisbane - won GF
1999 Cronulla - lost PF
2000 Brisbane - won GF
2001 Parramatta - lost GF
2002 New Zealand - lost GF
2003 Penrith - won GF
2004 Easts - lost GF
2005 Parramatta - lost PF
2006 Melbourne - lost GF
2007 Melbourne - won GF
2008 Melbourne - lost GF
2009 St. George Illawarra - lost SF
2010 St. George Illawarra - won GF
2011 Melbourne - lost PF
2012 Canterbury - lost GF

Since the establishment of the NRL, only 33% of Minor Premiers have gone on to win the Grand Final.

Interpret this stat as you will.

On those stats the minor premiers make it to the grand final 73% of the time.
I'd be happy with those chances to make the grand final.

Another way to interpret that stat is that the most commonly finished spot of the eventual premiers is first...

I interpret this as someone post rationalising with themselves that it is okay that they choked over the past month and blew their best chance at the MP in 24 years..

no irony there...

we lost that chokers tag a few seasons back now..

and after that awesome haul, we've then managed to be so shit under steve price that we haven't had the chance to choke since...

latest chokers since at least 2010 has been you guys..

rd 26 in 2010 & 2011 all you had to do was win to make the finals... but you didn't..

last year - choke.

this year sitting pretty on top of the ladder, choked.

Do you really lose the choker tag for winning once when you should won 2-3 premierships in last 10 years or at least made GF appearances?

Last year wasn't a choke, we achieved a lot in making 3rd place.

This year is still going Jerkface, so we'll see if we choke or not. Anything below a GF appearance will be underachieving imo.

2005 was the greatest double choke ever - Para and Saints.

FLMAO...most of my family on both sides were devastated.

Yes.

Yes you do.

What an unbelievebly daft question there, jerkface..

you only had to beat an average doggies side and the GF spot was yours...

So yes, you choked..

It's exactly the same scenario we were in for 05 & 06 when people say we choked..

Same position, same title..

We entered the finals in 3rd and finished in 3rd. How is that a choke?

Even this year's not a choke. Sure we spent most of it in 1st but we'll probably only finish one spot below.

It's not like we started a season off at 10-1 and finished it in 5th...

Oh dear...

Those new to choking just don't get the concept..

You had your chance to get on the big stage, but buckled under the pressure..

Had nothing to do with where you finished..

The only pressure was that on Reynolds' hammy. We were not favourites for that game.

You were in 2005, and for both finals matches in 2009 and bombed out on both occasions.

Muz, I realsie that St's year has been pretty ordinary and you probably don't have that much to do outside of trolling the Souths forum, but I think it's getting to the point where you need to lay off a bit again. When every second post in every thread is yours, it's time to give it a rest.

We value your contributions here but we just need to see a few less of them for a while please.

The reason behind such a high percentage of posts being attributed to ny handle is because I have merely been doing the courtesy of replying to the brace of forumners who have chosen to engage me in conversation on this topic..

To ignore them would be rude, akin to turning your back when someone is speaking to you..

And being rude is not what I'm all about..

I could understand your displeasure had I simply been making smartarse remarks about every post, and not engaging in conversation about the fortunes and expectations of whichever team is fortunate enough to win the minor premiership..

Of course, not wanting to tell you how to do your job or anything... I've made a pact not to do that to anyone again after that policeman...

Evidently that was the best way to hold the baton..

The boys all have their eyes on the bigger prize. The MP would've been nice but it wasn't to be. The most important thing is a grand final and I'm sure we'll be up for it next week.
