How to get CONSISTENCY

LINESPEED

This seems to be the Dragons major issue

Line speed is the quickest way to see if a team has turned up to play.
It is a simple formula for beginning to improve consistency if you apply it EVERY match. A simple, single and consistent defence message for the first 20 minutes.
From years of watching the Dragons you could pick the mental attitude of the team for the day in the first few minutes from this factor alone.
'Line speed in your face' - and numbers in the tackle in the opening salvos. Easy to coach? Explosive 10m bursts are draining, but the the NRL is now all about speed and survival of the fittest.
For a coach it has to be the easiest thing to train, instil and insist upon on game day. And for a nervous player not quite focussed it is the quickest and easiest way to psyche yourself up and get the adrenaline pumping.
From the stands it's SO obvious that we are in for a thumping when half the team are leaden footed and waiting for the opposition from the outset.
And uniform line speed stifles the opposition in every possible way.
When off their game the Dragons always let the opposition run to them, rather than moving up quickly as a line in the face of the opposition, denying them their moves and time to think - and forcing errors with REAL intent in the tackle.

I remember Dad telling me that the Dragons of the 50's & 60's deliberately gave the opposition the ball for the first 20 minutes or so and belted the hell out of them , softened them up - and got on top. THEN they would attack. That was a consistent GAME PLAN
And of course they had the cattle to do it! But so do we now. Another thing the Dragons of old did was BACK UP THE BALL CARRIER CONSISTENTLY on EVERY play. There seems to be an assumption with the current coaching across the NRL that a charging forward won't break the line in the first 4 tackles, because there's rarely anyone allocated to back the runner up. Surely this is where the lightweight, superfit speedsters should play a role? So, LINESPEED, INTENT, BACK YOUR MATE guys.

Packer dropped the ball cold, right from the kick off. Next our team could not defend our line. Next a try against us in the first 38sec.

A similar story right through the game so it's plain, the boys were not prepared properly, they were not up for this game.

Yes poor handling, too many errors, no line speed in defence, too much ball to McCrone and not enough to Widdop, too much focus on our right side in attack, our backline not moving up in a line in attack, no one shutting down Norman, our centres making poor defensive reads, Nightingale way to slow and Thompson - the hero of round 1, had the day off.

Maybe we were like some racehorses who suffer from 2nd up syndrome, so it will be interesting to see how the Tigpies play this weekend.

Confidence is a huge factor with Dragons footy. When we are in front we seem to be all over the opposition like a cheap suit, however, once behind, we just default to what they know best, and that's what we saw last Sunday.

Your essay could just have been replaced with 1 sentence. 'New coach brings consistency to Dragons'! There is no point thinking anything else will bring it except for a new coach. Ohhh, and a PAIR of new halves.

Tldr.

Fibre. Fibre is the answer.
We need to lose the toss and kick off first, or if win the toss, choose to kick off first. Smash them during the opening set. No more opening minutes like last week, please.
yeah someone smashed Widdop? with incredible LINESPEED towards the end of the Parra game and shut down the attack. The crowd roared - it's what physical contest is about; it's what brings out the best in players.
I think Cronulla smashed the receiver of the kickoff back over the in goal in the first minute of round 1. Collective LINESPEED running like that gels and lifts the morale & intensity of a team straight up & creates confidence with inspirational hits that others follow. Hunting as a pack. It's basic predator psychology - the crowd roars loudest, the players lift and focus; it's war! Get into it guys - you don't need a coach for the above!!

We COULD just try TRAINING to play OUR own style OF game and NOT trying to BEAT the opposition at their OWN GAME. Then we could CONTROL our own LINESPEED

How do we go from beign the fittest team of the round in round 1 to what was produced in round 2 ??? cant talk about line speed or in this case coaching deficiencies (in this game) Coaches don't prepare a team to drop the ball cold 5 meters from our line (Packer not once but twice) get caught out defensively (Aitken all day) Bacline out of position (all game) McCrone's poor options !!!!
I think maybe the players believed all the hype about them !!! As much as i would like to blame the coach the players played too poorly and the errors were just schoolboy stuff !!! So this week they get the blame wholly and squarely !!!
Lets see what this weekend brings.

When you create a username it doesn't have to be one of those quizzes like "what was the last thing you snorted?"

Amphetamines are bad for your consistency.

You could see parra was coming off their line a lot quicker than us, and it showed in the forwards stats. Stop the go forward, stop the attack. Simple. Unfortunately sharks have to be the most offside team in the nrl so don't expect too much different from this week. We need the middle boys running off the back fence to get the better of fifita and co. No doubt they will pepper aitken this week too. Geez eels really gave the rest of the comp a good blueprint for beating us the rest of the year didn't they.

If someone had been immediately designated to smash Norman after Packer dropped the first ball then the tone of the game might have changed. Instead of heads down and frozen thoughts in the backline, a streetsmart warrior captain/leader would've thought on their feet SO quickly to remedy the error and get into the face of the Parra halves straight away (I'm thinking JT & CS).
Once past Norman it was all over red rover. Intensity guys!
It's adrenaline born of fear and desperation ... commitment to the fans, self respect
...not replicating the parlous state of an appendage that Brian Smith used to so poignantly refer to, GUYS!!

Yes, teams who will be successful against Parra will be those who quickly shut down Norman. Why Mary did not organise this I really don't know.

Hate to use this as a excuse but Parramatta was allowed Tobe a metre or two offside inside the 10 all fu#ken day.
That's why the forwards couldn't get a roll on and we're dropping the ball.
If the NRL continue to allow these inept reffees to ruin games by subpart performances, to the dismay of the home crowd, the game will end up out the back door & fans will go elsewhere.
Some of the adjudication was so poor it was unwatchable. The voluntary tackle must be a thing of the past, because the ref on Sunday, not only
didn't inforce the rule on two occasions but penalised us on their goaline.
The state of the game as we know it will hopefully improve, as NRL next year take back more ownership from the TV networks.

No doubt practise makes perfect so lets start soon and with a consistent approach we will have it all done and dusted by round 5.

Consistency is alive with Mary he is consistently ignoring our weakness and ignores it. Whilst we have him as a coach we are going nowhere except backwards

Walters or Hasler will fix our problems unfortunately Mcgregor is a one dimensional coach.. He just doesn't know how to coach !
