RMC Wrap Round 2

A Maurice Kennedy penalty goal three minutes from full time saw defending premiers Mounties escape with a 22-all draw in their Ron Massey Cup ‘match of the round’ against a game Western Suburbs Magpies at Aubrey Keech Reserve last Saturday.

The Magpies – in a much improved display from their Round 1 loss to Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles – certainly took the contest right up to the home side for long periods after Mulga half Chad Porter opened the scoring in the third minute with a converted try.

Wests replied strongly with tries down the left to Veru Mapesone and Tom Capper to give the Magpies the lead at 10-6, before a Josh Toole double late in the half saw Mounties regain the lead at 14-10 by the interval.

After an extended second half arm wrestle, Wests took the lead with 16 minutes left after Tala Mapesone snapped up an intercept from a Sonny Bristow pass and dashed 75 metres to score.

Josh Davis extended Wests’ lead from a Brendan Waters grubber kick in goal, before Maurice Kennedy sent brother John over and set up the grandstand finish with 10 minutes left for the Mulga to draw back to 22-20.

Both sides had chances in the closing stages before the offside penalty in the 77th minute that Maurice Kennedy duly converted to force the first draw of the season.

The Guildford Owls opened their season with a 28-18 win over the Cabramatta Two Blues at McCredie Park last Saturday.

Freshened up from their opening round bye, Paul Fletcher’s men meant business from the time returning back rower Dylan McKeown opened the scoring in the third minute and journeyman hooker Daniel Vasek scored his first try shortly after to give the Owls a handy early lead.

Despite Tyla Tamou and Tenisio Ahovelo replying in kind for the Two Blues, Guildford clinched their win when Vasek completed a double on debut for the Owls whilst evergreen centre Harmony Hunt and opposite backrower Jake Carlaw also got on the scoresheet.

Nesiasi Matatitonga got the Two Blues’ last try as they tried to stay in the match in the second half.

A hat trick to winger Justin Gasovski saw the Auburn Warriors pip Concord-Burwood 32-28 in an entertaining match at Hammondville Oval last Saturday in both teams’ first match for the season.

Both sides went try for try in conditions that were still bordering on oppressive despite the later 5pm kickoff – with the Wolves jumping out to an early 10-nil lead thanks to early tries to Francis Laloua Tui and Jackson Garlick before the Warriors struck back with the first two of Gasovski’s tries and the first of Semisi Vea’s double to give Auburn the lead.

Sean-Paul Fenukitau got his first try late in the half for the Wolves to level scores at 14-all by half time.

The Warriors almost looked home when Vea and Jeremiah Leasi completed doubles for a 28-14 lead midway through the second half, before a bustling try to former Asquith Magpies centre Jeco Makatoa started a Wolves revival with a try on debut for the Wolves.

When former Mounties fullback Jake Horton joined Makatoa in scoring on his Wolves’ debut, a grandstand finish was set up at 28-24 beofre Gasovski’s hat trick with five minutes left gave the Warriors the breathing space they needed.

Fenukaitau’s second try with two minutes left gave the Wolves late hope, but the Warriors held out in the closing stages to hang on and win.

Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles maintained their impressive unbeaten start to the season with an impressive 30-16 win over Wentworthville at Laybutt Fields, Blacktown last Sunday.

The fired up home side won the match with an opening blitzkrieg of attack that opened up a 20-nil lead by half time thanks to an early Amanaki Manu double, backed up by other first half tries to Manaia Rudolph and John Tohi.

In a match that was fiery at times – referee Josh McGowan sent four players to the sin bin at various stages – Danny Barakat got the Magpies’ first try five minutes into the second half to give the visitors a hope of a comeback.

Blacktown then steadied when Blake Goodman and Ray Lesoa crossed in the space of four minutes midway through the half to put the home side out of sight at 30-4.

Atini Gafa and NRL Reality Show runner up Jordan Martin got late tries for ‘Wenty’ to make the final score respectable, as Barakat and Tohi were both sin binned in the last two minutes for a late scuffle.

St Marys and Hills District Bulls both had byes. The Bulls, Blacktown and Guildford share the competition lead after two rounds, with Mounties one point behind on three points.

Round three sees all four matches played on Saturday, with the match of the round seeing Mounties and St Marys play an early season rematch of the 2016 Grand Final at Aubrey Keech Reserve.

This wet weather needs to bugger off. Another week of postponements and venue switches.

Surely, after it happening for so many years, the NSWRL could have something in place with local councils to avoid having grounds closed similar to what the NRL has in place for their venues. Must be frustrating for their players.

No doubt it is frustrating but there is a bonus. The draw is a farce with 18 games spread over 25 weeks. It is likely that this game will now be scheduled in the period where Wests play only 1 game in 4 weeks.

Ron Massey Cup Results | Round 3

St Marys Saints 14
(M Cerruto 2 tries; A Davis 3 goals) def Mounties 6 (M Morris try; M Kennedy goal)

Concord-Burwood Glebe Wolves 22 (H O’Toole 2, N Leatigaga, P Siolo tries; S Williams 3 goals) def Guildford Owls 18 (L Brown, D Vasek, D Timoteo tries; J Carlaw 3 goals)

Due to wet weather, Lidcombe Oval has been closed and the match between the Auburn Warriors and Western Suburbs Magpies has been postponed.

St Marys were successful in the first hit out, although 10 of the side played SS against Asquith last week. St Marys used 4 of their NSW Cup players in this game and allocated another 2 to the SS side to stiffen up the challenge to Mounties in that grade.

The Wolves brought Glebe its first win at a senior level in nearly 90 years. The lead changed hands several times.

Hills produced the largest margin of the season to date after the opened up a 24-0 lead mid way through the first half. Feleti Mateo was a non starter again for the Bulls.

Blacktown and Hills have won both starts while Cabra is at the other end with 3 losses.

Due to wet weather, HE Laybutt Fields have been closed and the match between the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles and Asquith Magpies has been postponed.

Guildford's huge win over Cabra last week has been bookended by a pair of floggings by the 2 north shore sides.

Cabra, significant losers in the previous 2 games, had no problems in deflecting the efforts of Hills, winners of their first 2 games.

Wests got off the mark after suffering 2 floggings. St Marys suggested they will be one of the teams to beat by overcoming Mounties in a tight clash.

Premiers, East Campbelltown face Wenty tomorrow with both sides looking for their first win.

Interesting week for Cabra coach. Last time they lost first 4 matches he was president and punted the coach at the time. Hope they can get up this week.

Results | Ron Massey Cup Round 4
Western Suburbs Magpies 28 (J Davis 2, J Wheelhouse, J Mapesone, D Harris tries; V Mapesone 2, B Waters 2 goals) def Cabramatta 12 (B Anderson, N Mataitonga tries; B Cox 2 goals)

St Marys Saints 42 (M Sivo 3, J Tuliatu 2, J Vaegaau, G Daniela, S Luke tries; A Davis 5 goals) def Hills District Bulls 16 (T Robinson, J Hunt, D Barnes tries; J Horo 2 goals)

The matches between Mounties and the Concord-Burwood-Glebe Wolves and Guildford vs Blacktown have been postponed.

Results | Sydney Shield Round 4
Cabramatta 32 (T Tamou, J Galloway, S Kaivelata, T Jones, T McDonald tries; P Dumont 4 goals) def Western Suburbs Magpies 22 (C Yassmin 2, H Leauea, K Lui tries; H Leauea 3 goals)

The matches between Mounties and the Belrose Eagles and Guildford vs Blacktown have been postponed.

St Marys Saints 33 (A Oughtred , A Faguuaea, M Luke, B South, S Harris, J Utatao tries; J Rafferty-Butfield) 4 goals & field goal) def Hills District Bulls 20 (M Katia 2, I Gorman, J Lennox tries; J Horvat 2 goals)

Cabramatta are the only team to have played 4 games in RMC and are yet to win. They now have 14 games remaining spread over 21 weeks. Auburn has only played 1 game so they will play 17 games over the next 21 weeks. St Marys were dominant setting up a 32-6 lead at half time. Maika Sivo was a try scoring machine for Mounties in SS last year, totalling more than 40 tries and today produced a hat trick in RMC.

For the second week running Mounties has ruled that RMC and SS games not be played on Aubrey Keech so that only the NSW Cup games would be played on the ground. This week they were not able to transfer the games to another ground. Blacktown were advised on Friday night that McCredie was closed, possibly a premature decision.

Wests were unable to secure the points in the SS game despite a double from Christian Yassmin, who has played the previous 2 seasons in the National Rugby Championship and is in the Tigers NSW Cup squad. There are 2 games in SS tomorrow but East Campbelltown's home ground is closed so they will play Moorebank at Belmore Oval. The St Marys SS game has been incorrectly reported as 26-20 on the NSW website but the correct details are in NSWRL Live.

Today's SS results:

East Campbelltown Eagles 52
(E Connor 2, G Lahey, A Teariki, S Paasi, J Da Silva, T Leato, C Moustakas, M Talolua tries; E Connor 8 goals) def Moorebank Rams 28 (S Tuitavake, C Matthews, T Evans-Tsoi, K Hayman, B Cassell tries; K Hayman 4 goals)

Wentworthville Magpies 60 (J Minhinnick 3, J Miller, R Goldsmith, J Latham, K De Luis, J Mati-Leifi, A Gafa tries; B Newton 10 goals) def Asquith Magpies 18 (A Nicholls-O’Neill, A Taylor, S Jarvis tries; A Calvert-Evers 3 goals)

East Campbelltown produced their first win for 2017. Asquith need additional recruitment if they are to compete in the quasi RMC/SS comp they are playing in.

Serves Asquith right for how they went about forfeiting their entry in the RMC.

I think when the new NSW Cup comes in next year they need better organisation for the RMC. It's a great comp but needs to try and recruit some extra teams in to make it attractive to fringe fans.

Mounties, Cabramatta, Wests, Concord, St Marys, Wentworthville, Auburn, Blacktown, Guildford, Hills as your core group. Have Newtown come in (when Cronulla rebrands the NSW Cup team). Invest money to bring The Entrance back into the fold. Get Glebe up and running properly, a Wollongong side, a Sutherland side and maybe a side like Goulburn. That's 16 teams.

It's a nice thought, but ultimately the playing stocks have to be there. That's what's killed teams in these comps before - not to mention how they intersect with A Grade etc too.

Basically I think it'd require fairly strong funds injection (which is no guarantee) and a hell of a lot of people to make it happen.

Absolutely you need the playing stock but with the new pathway of the under 20's, when these kids turn 21+ and they aren't NSW Cup worthy then they could potentially filter in, plus your country boys coming down looking for a shot at the NRL.

If pathways are evident then players will come SS and RM.
Its interesting I have talked to people from Entrance last year and they were just not interested in that comp, didn't like the travel
