Some level of inconsistency in refereeing is inevitable. It is a fast paced game with stupid rules that aren't black and white. Any human in that situation won't deliver perfection and consistency (including those that expect it from our officials).
Get rid of the relentless stoppages, video replays and analyses of every decision and just play the f**ken game and watch most refereeing 'controversies' disappear.
I agree with your one of thought.
However, there's a difference between "inconsistency" and "playing favourites"; whether it's conscious or not, referees officiate Parramatta differently to their game-day opponents.
One incident that is clear in my memory comes from a few years back, when Marshall was at the Tigers; we gave away a penalty, and Marshall tool the quick tap, raced 50 metres upfield, and scored under the posts.
Now, I agree with the referees allowing play to go on - give away a penalty, and pay the price.
But whenever Parramatta tried to go for a quick tap, it was called back.
I'm sure it happens to every team, but I have no interest in other teams than Parramatta, so I don't watch other games much.
We were beaten by the better side, and played terribly - but the officiating is at an all-time low, imo.
And that was punctuated by the referees' refusal to sin bin Maloney in the first half. Once that was let go, the Sharks got away with murder in the ruck (and credit to them for taking advantage of that).
The irony for me is that referees seen terrified to make mistakes, because they'll be punished - but they're free to flip flop on their interpretations every single f**king week, and their jobs are safe.
Didn't an official come out a few years ago and admit that referees were instructed to look for certain penalties in regards to the Eels? If I recall correctly, he pretty much admitted that officials go into match day with a bias thinking that we will constantly give away penalties for offside, or hands in the ruck, or something.
I remember a game a few years ago where the referee warned the opposition captain three or four times about giving away certain penalties, but when we then gave away the same penalty, the referee had a go at our captain, and said that he would go to the bin next time.
One warning, versus three or four. Not exactly even...
I'm frustrated, but I'm not blaming referees for our piss poor form.
What I am pissed off about is that the men in the referees' uniforms are abysmal every week, and nothing ever gets done about it.
If I sucked at my job as badly as they do at theirs, I'd be in line at Centrelink by the end of the week.
