How to Fix Dragons

If you were Head Coach how would you fix our current predicament and pull us out of this downhill slide for the rest of the year? We have Canberra away then Manly at home before Knights away in the next 3 games.

Me;

I'd stick with Mann at 7 with instructions to both him and McInnes to get involved with ball and boot.

I'd drop MacDonald to reserves and switch Nighty to the right side with Aitken. Dufty into wing on the left side with Lafai.

I'd also stick with Lawrie, Host, Sele and depending on availability of Vaughan or need to rest him, Friz or JDB, include Kerr in addition.

If Duges is out chuck in another junior on the Wing and run Dufty at FB.

I would NOT keep doing the same shit hoping for a different result, ie hope MacDonald plays well, play Nighty at FB, McCrone at half or further develop Milne for the Tigers.

I know, desperate right?

I'd rather lose trying something different, giving juniors a go and send regulars a message than keep doing the same shit.

With our current squad and our current plan A we will struggle to beat the Knights away next time, let alone Bulldogs and Titans and we can forget beating Canberra, Manly and Broncos.

Your master coaching ideas please.

That's a hard question , but as you say ALSGI , the team cannot continue to perform the same tricks and expect to win their remaining matches . I likes Johno's idea of having another person with real ideas as to how to get the attack moving ( Langer would be great , but . . . ) .

There is no doubt that Mary is bereft of any ideas , other than to " have another go at doing the same thing again and we might succeed on this occasion " .
The only real solution that I can see is your own , that he must experiment with new players in positions that are not presently working .

He must attempt something other then what he has throughout the season . Otherwise he is only hitting his head against a brick wall .

  1. Don't pick any players carrying any injuries.
  2. If we are to replace a player in the top grade pick the youngest player from the corresponding position from reserve grade e.g. Garrick not KFFL, Kerr not Masoe or Matthews etc etc.
  3. Stop all the pre conceived ideas of how we are going to play and let the game flow and encourage the team to get the youngsters more heavily involved instead of having them just for the hard stuff.
  4. Stick with Mann in the halves and as you say let him and Mc Innes take some initiative in respect of the way we will organise the attack.
  5. Pick our fastest back from reggies (after all other 1st grade positions have been filled) and play him on the wing outside Lafai.
  6. Never take the 2 points unless it is close to the end of the game and it will make be the difference between winning and losing.
  7. If we get an injury during the game make 1 change and not 2 or 3 like we currently do.
  8. Organise the bench so nobody misses out and everyone gets at least 20 minutes games time.
  9. Run passing drills at training as we have a lot of players who can only go one way and opt not to pass even on their preferred side.
  10. Have consequences for below par performances.

Get a decent water boy like Allan Langer, who has good tactical nous and can instruct the team how to play. Needs to know a bit more strategy than Mary, but that shouldn't be hard to find.

Oh, and practice a few moves for God's sake.

We already have a waterboy.
He's currently out of his depth masquerading as coach of our squad.
Pretty handy squirting a downed player with water, though.

First of all I'd get rid of all ex players from coaching . Then wing it for the year giving the players more input with what works better for them . Promote the young blokes when needed ....

I like 3 and 9 in particular.

Admit there is a problem & it's the coaches responsibility to fix and address it. We ain't going anywhere in 2017 without a quality Halfback with a decent kicking game.
With Ben Hunt coming in 2018 it's time to add some youthful speed and enthusiasm to our backline this year and let's see what they can offer.
Rest the busted and get them ready if needed and learn to use the bench properly with impact.

This club needs to develop a culture. Model themselves on teams like the All Blacks, Maroons, Manchester UTD etc where it's an honour to wear the jersey.
Start by investing in the juniors who grow up in the area supporting and dreaming of playing for the club and not journeymen. Bring some pride back to the jersey

Stop using second man plays and start passing the ball straight along the line like we were doing in the first 7 games and for some reason suddenly stopped.

Agree we also need to play over the sdvantag line halves need to play a lot more direct and for Christ sake let's start with some aggression

Yep, Mary talked about 'controlled' agression in the coaches preview before the Titans game. Pfft.

Ensure every member of the Board, Management and coaching staff have aspirational, achievable, measurable performance targets which their futures are dependant upon.

Develop a style of play and game plans that utilise the skillset of the current players, not try to change the players style of play to fit a game plan.

If there is a skill set that's needed that doesn't exist to required level within the club then plan how to recruit it and execute the plan.

Be prepared to demote players or move players on that are not performing. This especially applies to senior players who are not delivering what is needed.

Select an inspirational, passionate player to lead and personally I wouldn't pick the game manager as the captain. Pick the player who is the competitor.

Ensure that the best players in the club are in first grade. If they are the quickest or youngest great but if the best player is older then the younger player will have to improve and dislodge them.

Train for game management, if you can't keep the pressure on its very hard to win. There are natural game managers but it is something that can be learned. Part of this equation is structure, knowing the outcomes you are trying to achieve with that structure and knowing when to play what's in front of you.

Don't necessarily copy what other teams are doing. Understand what they are doing but do what suits your team best.
