We need a captain that would have hurtled into Papalii on Friday night after he took Duges out.
Then the same captain would have made sure that Papalii was targetted for the rest of the game.
f**k the consequences he just took one of our boys out.
FFS everyone stood around looking for the water bottle wondering what to do next. What sort of f**king power game do they think they have if they watch one of their mates get taken out and prance around like video ref lawyers afterwards?

Well maybe they don't give a shit about Dugan since he decided to walk.

Agree to a certain point , in as much to go and jostle with him , to let him know that we won't stand for it . That's why we need someone such as Thompson who could give the ' evil eye ' to the devil himself , but still have enough common sense to realise not to go too far , or he may end up in purgatory for the rest of his days .

Widdop would play a far more natural game , if he did not have the responsibility of the captaincy . However its far too late in the race now to be swapping horses , something that Mary should put on his ' to do ' list in the off season .

The captain is not necessarily the best player, he is a leader in and off the field. He has heart and always gives it his all without whinging

"A leader must identify himself with the group, must back up the group, even at the risk of displeasing superiors. He must believe that the group wants from him a sense of approval. If this feeling prevails, production, discipline, morale will be high, and in return, you can demand the cooperation to promote the goals of the community.” Vince Lombardi

I think this comment has been seriously misunderstood.
"Dangerous game" - I don't think so.That is a total exaggeration.
I am certainly not advocating any restriction in terms of being chosen as team captain because of background or heritage.
I couldn't care less what their nationality or heritage of the captain is to be honest.
BUT, I am talking about who would be the best captain for our club.
Just compare Widdop against the other captains in the comp.
Storm - Cameron Smith - SOO and Australian representative
Sharks - Paul Gallen - SOO and Australian representative
Roosters - Boyd Cordner (co captain) - SOO and Australian representative
Cowboys - Jonathon Thurston - SOO and Australian representative
Eels - Beau Scott (co captain) - SOO and Australian representative
Panthers - Matt Moylan - SOO and Australian representative.
Souths - Greg Inglis - SOO and Australian reprsentative.
Tigers - Aaron Woods - SOO and Australian representative
Broncos - Darius Boyd - SOO and Australian representative
Manly - Daly Cherry Evans - SOO and Australian representative
Newcastle - Trent Hodkinson - SOO representative
Titans - Ryan James (co captain) - Minor Representation
Canberra - Jarrod Croker - Country origin and other minor representation
Auckland Warriors - Roger Tuivasa Scheck - NZ representative
Canterbury - James Graham - England International
St. George - Gareth Widdop - England International

So before we get all precious about the criteria of "heritage" let's look at the facts objectively.
13 out of the 16 clubs in the NRL have captains who have Australian heritage but, more importantly, have achieved representative honours in Australia.
Of those, 11 clubs have captains who have played SOO and have represented the Australian National Team.
The Warriors are an exception but in keeping with their own demographics and identity, their captain is a NZ international.
The only 2 exceptions are Canterbury who have gone with James Graham - you can make your own judgement as to his success as a captain in the NRL.
AND St. George/Illawarra who has appointed Gareth Widdop.
As an aside, Wayne Bennett appointed Ben Hornby (SOO and Australian representative) as captain of the Dragons in 2009 and who ultimately led the team to their first Premeirship as a JV.
So maybe that puts my criteria regarding "heritage" into perspective.
Every single club in the NRL is free to choose whoever they want for captain.
So these choices are not a coincidence and for me, it underlines why our club is being left behind.
I totally respect Widdop as a player but he is not the best choice for our club captain.

I agree to Widdop not necessarily being the best captain or maybe not the most 'inspirational leader' we want. For that I'd go JDB over Thompson. Reason being he is a junior and has possibly more years left in him.

I have no issue with the rest of your reasoning for why someone else could or should be captain except that you said Widdop doesn't have Australian heritage in your first post, but that shouldn't come into it at any point.

Joel Thompson far and away head of the pack Jack de Belen will be the captain in a year or two.stop bagging the pommie he tries hard but I'm sure he would play better without the captaincy burden

Agree Overseas dragon
I think it would free gareth up to concentrate fully on his job.
Thommo would also talk to the refs more we need someone like that.
The players love tommo.
I think he is the man.

Is JDB a junior? Thought he came thru the Dogs.

De Belin for mine. He's at the stage of his career where he is finally starting to deliver on the promise he's had for years. He's leading from the front here more than ever and you can see that he isn't far off from Origin (on merit). I also think he would be more comfortable being captain than say Frizell, who is another fine candidate but probably a little quiet.
Is De Belin the one who sings in the sheds after a win? If so, he's my man
