This 100%.. I don't think the Roosters are at any risk regardless of whether it is 9.3m or 9.6m or whatever. I think they would like to spend more if they could. What people need to understand is that all clubs have a vested interested to do what is best for them, they would be negligent if they did not. Likewise it is up to the NRL to make the best decisions for all, whatever that may be. It is simple.

Let's not pretend though that clubs wanting a smaller cap are not acting in self interest also. Some are hoping to pick up players from the likes of the Bulldogs for unders, fair enough too. Some cannot afford more and some like the Bronco's who can pay players enormous third party deals would prefer a lower cap so they can increase the uneven playing field. They are better off having an 8m cap, so they can pay 8m on the cap and 4m off it, than having a 10m cap and paying 4m above it. It allows the total wages bill subsidized by third parties being a higher proportion of total payments.

Of course all clubs have a vested interest. But that doesn't really change the fact that some clubs went and negotiated deals they had no salary cap jurisdiction to do so, and others chose to stay compliant with the rules. The former are trying to band together so they can continue to make hay off reckless spending.

Sorry, but what???

The clubs that have followed the directive are not the ones who are gaining anything here.

Had everyone followed the "f*ck you" attitude of a few, then clubs who are on or under the cap would have gone to market for players signed by the arrogant few.

The ship has now sailed. Clubs that have abided by the directives cannot now magically go to market for off contract players now wrapped up by clubs who ingnored the guidelines.

The winners out of a cap over the directives given are NOT the clubs who played fair.

Agree. And also worth noting the likes of the Bulldogs continued to sign or renew contracts after the salary cap was announced, obviously knowing full well they were over. Really they had no right to do it but believed they could use politics to bully their way around it.

So
After media+fans got their undies in knots again over stock standard negotiations the NRL cap issue has reached a sensible compromise. Shocking stuff. Wonder what we'll all get outraged about next week.

If reports are true is still 1/2mill less than some clubs are alleged to have spent.

Some reports have it over the million mark.

Let's all wish really hard that this is true.

Agreed.

We all go for different teams and have vastly different opinions on the game but lets all come together like a post-match prayer group and hope like all f**k the Doggies have dug themselves a big hole that no other side helps them out of by picking up players they actually wanna get rid of.

Even if you've got a soft spot for the Bulldogs (you make me sick!) I think we can agree it would be piss your pants funny if they didn't make finals while Aaron Woods was there.

NRL clubs find middle ground, agree to $9.4 million salary cap for 2018 season
By Chris Barrett

NRL clubs have agreed to a salary cap of $9.4 million next year, in signing off on a pay offer that will on Monday be put to the game's players.

Clubs have been split down the middle about next year's cap figure, with as many as nine saying that it should not be lifted above the $9.2 million as indicated back in April.

Others, including Canterbury, had pushed for it to go as high as $9.6 million.

They voted, they agreed unanimously at a two hour meeting at League Central on what effectively amounts to a $9.4 million cap. That includes a flat cap of $9.2 million, plus a $200,000 portion of the veterans and development player's allowance, which can be spent at the club's discretion.

The Bulldogs are the club under the most salary cap stress for 2018, but chairman Ray Dib emerged from the meeting saying he was happy with the deal.

"It's a good outcome for everyone, we are all going to settle on $9.4. We are very happy with it actually, it's close to what we wanted." He said.

When asked whether Canterbury would have to shed players, Dib was non-committal.

"That's something we'd consider, but we're happy with the outcome."

The new cap will be put to the RLPA on Friday.

"This is an important step but we are still in negotiations with the RLPA," NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said.

"Getting the clubs to agree on a package is very important for the game and especially the players.

"The clubs are all in different positions in relation to the salary cap next year which makes it even more significant that they united today to agree on a figure."

Guess as its not $10 million, we have the opportunity to invest in the companies that make brown paper bags and distribute them in certain postcodes

Interesting next 3/4 months to watch and see if there is any fallout and late player movements

How does this work? The NRL and clubs have agreed the cap without the RLPA?

What if the RLPA says it wants more?

Just as an interesting fact to put things in perspective: next years entire salary cap for all 16 clubs is still >$10mill short of a single NFL team, of which there are 32 (and that is not converting USD to AUD!)

No perspective at all.

Thats like comparing NRL to your local pub league team.

With the salary cap being raised I can now see even more ludicrous amounts of cash being thrown up and more overpaid players. It will keep more top line players in Rugby League instead of them jumping ship.

yes your avg plodder will prob earn around $300k, not bad for someone who would otherwise be earning around $60k probably.

This is the kind of thing that should have been sorted before the season started, not 3/4 through a season. No wonder some players are playing like they don't give a shit because they are more concerned about how much money they can make.

Discord: A bloody free-for-all might be just what the NRL needs
Steve Mascord

Bart Campbell, the chairman of the Melbourne Storm, has warned clubs will send themselves broke with their salary cap demands.

But the League has already demonstrated a model for this situation: it buys the teams before they go broke. It could do this in Sydney and then actively search for new owners in cities other than Sydney. If the NRL can find buyers for the likes of the Titans and Knights once, it can do so again – even if the running costs are higher than they are now. So the buy-and-sell scenario could help us move teams or keep them where they are, depending on the NRL's strategies.

That's if there are strategies. It has become clear the League Central administration – which once had a cheque for $11 million available for anyone wanting to relocate – has neither the ambition or means to widen the competition's geographical footprint in the medium-term.

So we might as well rely on market forces to do the dirty work, just like Arko and The Cannon intended two decades ago.

I've always been a defender of the salary cap as a means of achieving competitive parity. I've always argued rugby league needs to be inwardly socialist and outwardly capitalist to compete with other sports.

But every fan that competitive parity is going to bring us is already on board. And a wider footprint is going to bring us more fans – even if that means sacrificing parity for a few years. I have an ancestor who invited people he despised to his wake, plied them with whisky and armed them with very sharp knives in the hope an argument would break out.

Let's do that with NRL teams.

When we look at a list of the clubs who are reportedly happy to go with a higher cap – Canterbury, Canberra, South Sydney, St George Illawarra and Sydney Roosters – we have a clue as to some of the clubs who might be left at the end of an open "arms race" scenario.

The salary cap is supposed to "save clubs from themselves". Let's stop saving clubs from themselves and instead give them as much metaphorical rope as we can.
