Toronto CEO predicts super league $$ turnover greater than NRL in the coming years

A bold claim from a man that has easily achieved every goal he has publicly declared after stating his intention to insert a Canadian team into the RFL competition.

Plans are underway for more North American teams and backers are being secured.

Hopefully as this all develops it forces NRL officials to focus their minds and make improvements here.

The people who say there aren’t enough players to expand the NRL will ride that excuse for decades if the SL becomes significantly richer.

More reason than ever to ensure we have a strong game in all regions of Australia and effective development pathways through NZ, PNG, and the Pacific.

Perhaps the day has finally come where the wider world has discovered Rugby League. If European and American money ever take serious notice of the game, the NRL will need to be aggressively proactive to maintain its place as the world's premier Rugby competition.

SL won't grow in any real way while clubs like Salford and Leigh are there ahead of Catalans, Toronto and Toulouse. They can talk about TV deals in North America all they like but they're about the kill off any immediate French revenue. That displays their weaknesses. The RFL and the SL board have some changes to make or this potential North American interest will amount to nothing as well.

As for the NRL, they're far too arrogant and equally myopic to do anything. It is not run by RL people and doesn't see growing the sport as a priority compared to some of the stupid shit they are obsessed with, like their own PR, fudging figures and hollow tokenistic political statements.

This isn't about dots on a map...we'd like to see all clubs financially viable...maybe for the next TV deal we'll look at it...everything will be different when new Sydney stadiums are built...we'd like to see a team in the NSW Cup first.

What happened to the proposed Fiji side in the NSW Cup competition? Are we getting any closer to that?

After the introduction of the PNG Hunters into the QLD Cup, and now with them being champions, it should serve as a good example of how to expand in a sensible way without going too hard too early.

Losing Catalans is a bad move for super league.

However these new clubs will be floating across the three divisions of rugby league.

Hopefully Perez and co have plans for the other tiers outside of super league.

Toronto will be in Super League in 2019, and win the Super League in 2020 or 2021. They will then smash the NRL champions in the WCC. At that point someone in the NRL might wake up and expand the NRL to include Wellington, Perth, Brisbane 2, and the PNG Hunters.

There is nothing to suggest this will happen. SL simply isn't growing that fast and if anything despite being so far ahead the NRL is widening the gap if anything.

If this actually happened it would have a huge impact on rugby league world wide. I just don't think it will.

Whenever LU pumps up someone like this, I get the Micheal Searle shivers.
Eric Perez has developed and broadcast his own rugby league TV show on Canadian TV for quite a few years (awareness levels of this fact in Australia is virtually zero), established a team in Toronto with games shown live on Canada’s equivalent of our ABC and on pay TV, has an airline sponsor that covers their travel costs and easily achieved all his other publicly stated goals this year.

If he says that their turnover will be greater than the NRL, his track record shows he should be taken seriously.

I f*ckin hope so...

RL used to be about "expand or die"; if you didnt, another comp would catch you standing still and send you to oblivion.

But since the SL war and NRL became the undisputed major league, RL has become lazy.

If North American TV money starts flowing into the ESL coffers, Aussie players will star heading that direction again. NRL will be laying catch up and they will have a blueprint on exactly how to do it; expand to new markets!!!

This could be te bestthing to happen to RL in Australia in a while...

An entrepreneur that knows a top line sport when he sees it! This guy is growing the code without hurting it.

The future will be interesting. If clubs whinge now about the lack of player depth just wait and see the talent signed up to North America should this take off.

http://m.bbc.com/sport/rugby-league/41544831

“The man behind the Toronto Wolfpack is set to launch bids for two more North America rugby league sides.

Eric Perez is in advanced talks with two professional sports clubs, believed to be in Hamilton and Boston, and will begin negotiations with the Rugby Football League in the next few days.

.......

"We are looking to make Super League the most commercially viable competition, apart from the Premiership, that plays in the northern hemisphere.

"To do that you need to have more North American markets, at least five or six clubs in the next 10 years."

F*ck mate, if this guy can actually get it done, he will be the best thing to ever happen to RL...

Shows what happens when a sport finally pulls its head out of its own asshole and goes to find some wealthy/powerful/clever mates.
