Alex Walmsley Considering NRL Switch

St Helens prop Alex Walmsley is believed to be considering offers from Multiple NRL Clubs for the 2018 season and beyond.

Walmsley, 27, is understood to be attracting plenty of interest from NRL Clubs, with the St George Illawarra Dragons believed to be leading the race for the St Helen’s power forward.

Walmsley would join recently signed England International and Captain James Graham, who will make the switch from the Canterbury Bulldogs and will play for the Dragons in 2018.

Walmsley’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2018 season and St Helens are hopeful they can retain the 27-year-old, but understand the money, lifestyle in Australia and the challenge of testing himself against the world’s best players, will be hard to compete with.

NRL Club St George Illawarra will not have it all their own way trying to lure Walmsley to the NRL, as it is believed England Coach Wayne Bennett is interested in bringing the Englishman to the Brisbane Broncos.

Other Clubs believed interested in Walmsley’s services are to be the Manly Sea Eagles, Newcastle Knights, NQ Cowboys and the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Walmsley’s had his best season in Super League in 2017, making 29 appearances for St Helen’s, leading the competition in carries (525) and metres gained (4256). The Power-forward also scored 11 tries and was a major part of St Helen’s success in 2017.

Walmsley has made 138 appearances for St Helens and scored 21 tries, since making his debut with the club in the 2013 season. He is expected to make a decision on his playing future within the coming weeks.

Have a quick peruse of the rumours thread bud, we've been on this one all day.

However if we're keeping this to a dedicated thread, then I'll contribute.
Would LOVE to pick up Walmsley, he's been a cut above every other forward in the ESL for a couple of years now and pommy forwards tend to do well over here. He would be pretty fearsome coming off the bench for us.

If we get him we should immediately release Latimore.
If the power plan is the go again in 2018, we need all the props we can get to ensure the burn out that happened in 2016 and 2017 does not occur again. No more playing injured:

First Grade
Graham
Vaughan
Walmsley
Ah Mau

Reserve Grade
Latimore
Lawrie
Kerr
Young Prop

8. Graham
9. McInnes
10. Vaughan
11. Frizell
12. Sims
13. De Belin

14. Walmsley
15. Ah Mau
15. Host
17. Leilua

Looks good to me.
We all know that won't happen. Mary needs a utility to sit on the bench for the whole season just incase someone gets injured right? Mann? No chance of actually playing with 17 men.

A lot of variables working against us however..
Sure, Widdop and Graham could have a word to him.. But Bennett is coaching the English side. That could be the deciding factor.
Also, Brown coached Walmsley when he was at St Helens and there was word of a trade on the cards.. Hodkinson for Walmsley. That could also be a deciding factor.

Money is the only thing that will bring him to us I think.

Not just the links to the coaches, if Walmsley is any good then he will likely have a more prominent role at the Broncos considering they just lost Blair or Knights as well considering they were supposedly chasing both Graham and Blair. Not holding my breath on this one.

Against us:
- Will be coached by Bennett
- Has been coached by Nathan Brown before, swap with Hodkinson possible

For us:
- Will be playing with Graham and Widdop in the WC
- Graham in particular is a St Helens legend, likely has massive respect for him
- Maybe he wants to move from Red V to Red V, saints to saints?
- We have the cap space to make a competitive offer

Maybe we should use Frizell, Thompson and Vaughan in the centres and wings occasionally next year as they are faster than the rest of our three-quarter line and can tackle and have good ball security. That would allow us to promote Host to partner De Belin and Sims and play Leilua on the bench with Lawrie and Latimore with Mann as the utility as follows:-
Dufty
Nightingale
Frizell
Vaughan
Thompson
Wisddop
Hunt
De Belin
Sims
Host
Graham
McInnes
Ah Mau
Bench
Leilua
Lawrie
Latimore
Mann
That would get rid of Aitken, Lafai and MacDonald and the ineffective McCrone and Milne who lost us games through poor defence, dropped ball, stupid passes and pedestrian attack highlighted by brain explosions. We could then await the arrival of the Under 20's backs. Bennrtt used Costigan, Prior and Scott quite effectively in these types of utility roles to plug gaps.
