Alex Walmsley Considering NRL Switch
St Helens prop Alex Walmsley is believed to be considering offers from Multiple NRL Clubs for the 2018 season and beyond.
Walmsley, 27, is understood to be attracting plenty of interest from NRL Clubs, with the St George Illawarra Dragons believed to be leading the race for the St Helen’s power forward.
Walmsley would join recently signed England International and Captain James Graham, who will make the switch from the Canterbury Bulldogs and will play for the Dragons in 2018.
Walmsley’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2018 season and St Helens are hopeful they can retain the 27-year-old, but understand the money, lifestyle in Australia and the challenge of testing himself against the world’s best players, will be hard to compete with.
NRL Club St George Illawarra will not have it all their own way trying to lure Walmsley to the NRL, as it is believed England Coach Wayne Bennett is interested in bringing the Englishman to the Brisbane Broncos.
Other Clubs believed interested in Walmsley’s services are to be the Manly Sea Eagles, Newcastle Knights, NQ Cowboys and the South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Walmsley’s had his best season in Super League in 2017, making 29 appearances for St Helen’s, leading the competition in carries (525) and metres gained (4256). The Power-forward also scored 11 tries and was a major part of St Helen’s success in 2017.
Walmsley has made 138 appearances for St Helens and scored 21 tries, since making his debut with the club in the 2013 season. He is expected to make a decision on his playing future within the coming weeks.
