Dragons concede training almost impossible before Anzac Day clash

Table-topping St George Illawarra are resigned to having just one short session on the training paddock on the eve of their grudge clash with the Roosters as a scheduling quirk plays havoc with their normal preparation for the Anzac Day blockbuster.

The Dragons will put their unbeaten start to the season on the line against the in-form Warriors in New Zealand on Friday night, but so cramped will their turnaround be for the biggest match of the regular season they will virtually make field sessions off limits before Wednesday's match.

Anzac Day falling on a Wednesday was always going to provide a scheduling challenge and Dragons' high performance staff have virtually scrapped their roster's entire training load after they return from across the Tasman.

Despite pouring the majority of their energy into the Warriors, the Dragons have had one eye on their Anzac Day plans for a number of weeks as their red-hot start to the season faces its biggest test with two huge games in the space of five days.

Coach Paul McGregor has slated just one captain's run 24 hours out from the Anzac Day match as the only serious work his player will do on the training pitch to prepare for their traditional rivals, so focused they will be on rehabilitation after facing the Warriors.

Warriors more dangerous after perfect record ruined: Dragons coach McGregor
The Dragons won't travel back from Auckland to Sydney until Saturday and will be given a day off on Sunday before a further light recovery on Monday, leaving them a brisk Tuesday workout as the only time they will lace on the boots.

It will mean precious little time to iron out any kinks which may arise from against the Warriors, who will also feature on Anzac Day in their annual clash against the Storm in Melbourne.

The Roosters will have the benefit of an extra day's recovery in comparison to the Dragons and no travel burden given they were scheduled to take on the Bulldogs in Sydney on Thursday night.

St George Illawarra's sizzling opening six rounds has pushed them into premiership favouritism, but they will be well aware their season started in similar fashion last year.

Captain Gareth Widdop limped off with an injury and Mitchell Pearce broke his field goal curse on Anzac Day in 2017 as the Dragons eventually missed the finals.

And this year's Anzac Day assignment shapes as not much easier given the scheduling headache before the fixture temporarily shifts to the Sydney Cricket Ground from 2019, owing to the Allianz Stadium overhaul.

Having lost 13 of their last 14 clashes against the Dragons, the Warriors will be hoping to snap St George Illawarra's winning start to the year after coming off their first defeat of the season against the Broncos.

And halfback Shaun Johnson, who will line up against a rejuvenated Ben Hunt, wants some of the credit for the Warriors' fast start to be heaped back on their coach Stephen Kearney.

We have a couple of bad weeks and I guarantee 'Mooks' will be the one getting hit with it all

Shaun Johnson
"We can overlook the coach when we're going well," Johnson said this week. "We have a couple of bad weeks and I guarantee 'Mooks' will be the one getting hit with it all. A lot of credit has to go to him. As players we don't look any further than him. He's the full stop at the end of it all.

"Good or bad, win or lose he's always going to be there to take that. Communication stuff ... he's been working with the senior leadership group. [But] it's back to business and we don't like to get too ahead of ourselves when we win and same when we lose."

It's not like they are flying back from America, it's a three hour plane ride, it takes longer to drive to Newcastle if the traffics bad.
They will be fine.

The reality is most teams face the same problem with flights when they go to north qld. The warriors face the travel problem every second week.

The toughest part in our case is the 4 day turnaround, with the flight included. At that level, one extra day of recovery can make a difference. But hopefully the lads can put in a shift against the Roosters knowing they have over a week off afterwards.

Yeah but they don't drive an hour to training every day!

Yep the upside is 11 day turnaround for the storm game.

Roosters will ark up because its an Anzac Day clash but they're limited to only scoring via 2 channels
1. Cronks Kicks
2. Latrell Mitchell

We have too much variety in attack, big game forwards and too much mongrel for these pea hearts...
+12 in the end...

Easts haven't clicked yet. Their ball control is also terrible right now. When their regular winger comes back that will help them too. Reece Robinson, has been woeful and Aubusson is not a centre. Cronk and Tedesco haven't built any combination yet either.

Thats not their problem - their problem is their forwards - they're lacking a real killer leader - Cordner is not a leader, JWH is on and off and Nappa is the same....they cant win the comp w that forward pack....

Hang on re combos Widdop/Hunt/Dufty had 7 weeks to put together their combo - much the same time that Roosters combos have - their problem is deeper - they're playing way too structured and it doesn't suit them - they need to be more off the cuff but with Cronk there IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!! he's the structure king...Roosters are way too predictable in attack until its gets to Mitchell - everyone else in their back line has as much creativity as Mcrone!! And before you mention Keary - he only comes to life during broken play plus his passing is absolutely woeful! for a 5/8...your 5/8 should be your best passer of the football - he's their worst!!

Should be a cracker of a game. Low score. I'll predict golden point with Cronk to kick the winning field goal. Roosters in a tight one.

If we have to play our Anzac game in a bigger stadium then take it to ANZ not the oppositions fricken home ground. Does that not sound stupid to you?
I get what you're saying, but we play the game at Allianz out of respect, and so that the diggers can attend after the march. It's not stupid, it's the right thing to do.

Next year it will be a roosters home game.

Then why don't the NRL just make the ANZAC game every year a Roosters home game? We play it at their home ground every year don't we?

Because our club's rivalry has become an important part of Anzac Day. It's a part of our partnership with the roosters for the day. If they made it a roosters home game the roosters would be able to dictate who they play, and it wouldn't necessarily be us.

Really? Sounds like a good deal for the Roosters. I call BS on that theory. The ANZAC clash between roosters and dragons will continue and since it is at the Roosters home ground it should be a roosters home game. To play them every second year twice at their home ground is ridiculous.

My hope is the focus at training will be kick pressure. Way too many bombs with zero result. We didn’t get a chance to work the Warriors over because our kicking was poor(no grubbers behind the line, no mid field chips when the bombs weren’t working, poor attempts at repeat sets). We have the variety in our kicking game but didn’t use it. Hopefully that changes for the Roosters game.
