Raiders coach Ricky Stuart calls for NRL to fix contract system

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart says the NRL need to overhaul the players' contract system because it's distracting the players.

More than half the Raiders team that lost to South Sydney at Central Coast Stadium on Saturday was off-contract.

Both their halves, Blake Austin and Aidan Sezer, and a huge chunk of their forward pack - Sia Soliola, Siliva Havili, Junior Paulo, Luke Bateman, Shannon Boyd, Josh Papalii and Dunamis Lui - finish their Raiders contracts at the end of the season - although it's believed Paulo has already accepted a four-year deal worth almost $3 million to return to Parramatta in 2019.

Stuart said there needed to be a better system, rather than one that benefited player managers - and he didn't just say that because of the situation the Green Machine was in.

He said other sports didn't have the same problems, but wouldn't be drawn on what his preferred model was.

Both soccer and the AFL have set trade periods, while the AFL also has a draft.

"The contractual process and how it's structured make it, I believe, very difficult to work to when you've got players off-contract, and they are a disturbance throughout the playing season," Stuart said.

"And it's not because we're in this position, it's happening to us at the moment.

"I believe that it's a disruption to the players who are paid to play football and there's got to be another way or another system because every other elite sport has a better system or structure where it doesn't disrupt the season.

"There's a lot of other things that I'd like to say, but it's not the time or place for me to say it."

Boyd's been linked with the Gold Coast Titans, Papalii' with the Titans and the Rabbitohs, and Sezer's reportedly interested in moving back to Sydney.

It's believed the Raiders have offered contracts to a majority of their off-contract stars, with Bateman close to finalising a two-year deal.

The Raiders coach felt all the rumours highlighted the disruption it caused players during the season.

"That's the thing, there's always speculation around players that are off-contract," Stuart said.

"It's another disruption and disturbance and to put a player in this position where they have to negotiate their careers in season - it's not always their choice of wanting to do this, but it's better for them to be negotiating in season for the managers' sake.

"We've got a wonderful club here. Every player that I've spoken to wants to stay here and be a Raider and I haven't heard anything [else]."

Raiders second-rower Joe Tapine said it wasn't something that's distracted him since joining the Raiders on a four-year deal in 2016.

"No, I don't really take it into consideration. It's a business, people come and go, but I'm happy to play alongside any of the brothers whether they're staying or leaving," he said.

Stuart accuses Tom Burgess of diving

By AAP

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart has blasted Sam and Tom Burgess following his side's 42-22 thumping at the hands of South Sydney.

Stuart said Sam was lucky not to be sin-binned after collecting Aidan Sezer high midway through the second half of an NRL encounter that at times turned fiery at Central Coast Stadium.

In pointed post-match comments on Saturday, he also implied Tom had laid down after being collected high by English Test teammate Elliott Whitehead.

Stuart was bristling after seeing skipper Jarrod Croker sin-binned for a professional foul for holding back Angus Crichton close to the line.

Stuart was perplexed Sam was also not sent to cool off for 10 minutes and said he was only allowed to stay on the field because Sezer didn't stay down.

"That's not for me to comment on. But I hope Sam's happy that Sezer doesn't lay down for him," Stuart said.

Stuart's comments appeared to be aimed at Tom following his tackle by Whitehead.

Sam also during the week took aim at Canterbury's Josh Morris, who he accused of diving during the elbowing incident for which he was suspended for two weeks.

Sam now faces a nervous wait for the match review committee sheet and could be set for yet another stint on the sideline.

Sam didn't want to talk to waiting media but told Fox Sports: "I don't think there was anything in it."

Tom denied he had taken a dive, saying he suffered a burning sensation up his arm and neck.

"It's all right. It's (Stuart's) comment. I'm not a player to lay down," Tom said.

"It hurt, it was burning so as soon as that finished I got up."

Did Ricky actually say Tom dived, or did the AAP put words in his mouth? Genuine question, I haven’t seen the whole conference.

He could just as easily have been referring to Sam’s comments about Morris taking a dive.

Ricky missed his calling writing articles for the betoota advocate.

What's next? 'The salary cap is stopping me from getting the best team on the paddock and the fans are hurting'

I can see an exodus.

The players realise he's damaging their prospects

Oh it's coming alright... if there is smoke, we could be losing Paulo, Papalii, Austin, Sezer, Boyd and maybe more.

But fear not! Future lead Plaintiff of the CTE Class action against the NRL, Luke Bateman is about to stick around for 2 years

Whitehead and Sam Burgess should have been sent off. But Ricky is still a merkin.

FMD. So its the NRL's Fault that 50% of the Canberra Raiders squad are off contract at the end of 2018. I didn't realise that Greenburg and co did the Raiders recruitment and retention  Does this bloke ever take any responsibility for his and his club's actions?

his plan backfired. he expected us to have won a comp (lol !!!!!) by now and he could dump players as needed to be cap compliant with a good side

instead he has a bunch of fat losers all off contract and the possibility of losing every one because we are a dumpster fire.

Rick might have to throw the boots on the way things are going down in the nation's capital. I wonder what Noa Nadruku and Brett Mullins are up to these days as well....
