Bloomberg HK Scottish Reivers to join the HKRL 9s
IMG_8793.jpg

HKRL are delighted to announce that the Bloomberg Hong Kong Scottish Reivers will be joining the HKRL 9s 2017 on April 22nd at King’s Park. The Reivers, who are Hong Kong Scottish Rugby Football Club’s first ever Rugby League team, join the Diamond Chiefs (Papua New Guinea) and Esarn All Stars (Thailand) as the first confirmed entries into this year’s competition that will include overseas teams for the first time ever.

Hong Kong Scottish was formed in April 2011 to be the home of the Scottish rugby community in Hong Kong and are a sister club of the historic London Scottish. They made their first ever appearance at the Melrose 7s and the club has grown impressively since – boasting more than 500 members (of whom almost 300 are playing members). In addition to rugby union, the club has teams that compete in football, netball, basketball and lacrosse, with the Reivers being the newest addition to the club’s sporting roster.

The new Reivers side will have some substantial League experience already, with several players having already played in the HKRL 9s, the Side of Origin clash, the Battle of the Hemispheres and the HK Residents XIII tours in the past.

‘We’re very happy to have been able to set up a Rugby League side at Hong Kong Scottish. There is a lot of appetite from our players to play in the 9s and future HKRL competitions. There are quite a few who have played in previous HKRL fixtures and tournaments in past couple years already and we see it is as a great opportunity to develop and grow the club in another sport’, team manager Dan McCray told us.

He also provided some insight into the choice of name for HK Scottish’s latest team and the style of play they will be looking to implement.

‘We’re named after the infamous cavalry raiders of the border country because we hope to embody the same swift and vicious attacking style that our name namesakes had in the past.’

HKRL 9s will be taking place at King’s Park, April 22nd. Players, volunteers or sponsors interested in participating are welcome to message us directly on Facebook or email us at info@hongkongrugbyleague.com.

South victorious against North 30-14 in Battle of Origin

Origin-17.png

The Southern Hemisphere side pulled away in the second half to defeat a spirited Northern Hemisphere side 30-14 in HKRL’s Battle of Origin. The much anticipated one-off match didn’t disappoint with both sides contributing to a physical contest right from the offset.

The game made a blistering start with the Souths managing to get themselves into 10-0 lead early on in the game with scores through Tui Taniela and Josh Tuisoso. Stand-off Taniela and hooker Nathan Black were particularly impressive as they dictated terms for the South going forward, bringing their big runners into play to great effect. However, a unclaimed ball straight from a restart meant the North reclaimed possession deep into South’s half, and from the resulting set the North managed to get a score back through second rower and HKS Reivers’ Conor Cairns charging over from short range.

In response, the South showed their clinical attacking edge with a breakaway score through Taniela’s second. However, the North’s response was equally strong as they started to dominate possession and territory for the remainder of the half. Lock forward and Kowloon Tiger regular Frank Cartwright was a formidable presence in both attack and defense, winning plenty of big collisions throughout the game for the North. Valley Broncos Ringo Lung grew into the game at hooker during the North’s purple patch, whilst his Broncos teammate and centre Owen Pescod sliced through the South defense with a number of strong line breaks, though the South’s Frankie Solomona and Tim Smith did put in a number of shuddering shots at their opposition. The North finished the half strongly as Cairns once again showed his prowess near the try line charging over from 5m for his second, making the half time score 16-10 to the South.

With the game evenly poised at half-time, the South produced a superb 20 minute spell in the third quarter that effectively ended the contest. Lifting their intensity up another notch, their physicality and broken field running eventually wore down a tiring North’s defence to score three tries through Broncos second row Dylan Navra and two from Harry Leato. Despite spending plenty of time in opposition territory and a number of repeated infringements by the South in the remainder of the game, the North failed to engineer a comeback, though a loud cheer did go up for Cairns who again managed to drive over from close range once more to score his third try of the game, bringing the final score to 30-14.

Wan Chai Warriors beat Valley Broncos 36-24 in Round 3 of the ICG Super League.

4.4.jpg.7fd00e18859ddcb2afaaf2b959d37b90.jpg

The Wan Chai Warriors are still in the running for a place in the rugby league ICG Super League grand final thanks to a 36-24 victory over the Valley Broncos on Saturday at King's Park in Kowloon.

Strong performances by Tui Tanielu and Hogan Toomalatai mean they stay third in the table. But the odds are still against them getting the second spot needed for a place in the final on July 15.

The Warriors got off to a poor start. Valley took the lead, and dominated the early stages, before the Warriors rallied to end the first half with a 24-14 lead.

In the second, Valley again piled on the pressure, scoring first in the now muddy conditions. But as the game progressed, the Broncos started to tire, and the Warriors’ Frankie Solomona and Tui Tanielu then took control to give their team victory by a comfortable 12 point margin.

Valley finish the season having lost all three of their Super League games.

Hong Kong Rugby League 17 man squad named.

25.1.jpg

Congratulations to all 17 players, many who return for their second international test match including the bulldozer Ben Ryan and Toby Leiwho are traveling from Australia.

Ringo Lung keeps the captaincy and is joined by senior players, Jason Yip and JJ Nielsen with Gus Spence proving the old adage that if you're good enough you're old enough. Hogan Toomalatai, Richard Lindsay, Alvin Chan, and Mouclier Ben all also return whilst there are new call ups for Ghislain Baleyte, Craig McCurrich, Dylan Navra, Alexander Shvets and Tommy Wong who will earn their first International cap. Head coach Jason Fairleigh also makes his international debut.

The team are currently training well in the searing heat of Hong Kong which should condition them for conditions in Tokyo in June.

Head coach Jason Fairleigh had a few words to say about the current squad:

“It is a young group, but with some really important senior players so I feel the balance of the squad is good, both in terms of its experience, its character and also the positional balance. We have been working hard on improving our flaws from the first game and hope to come away with the win in Japan."

The game is the last international for Hong Kong before they compete in September's Emerging Nations World Championship in Sydney.

I was staying in the same hotel as the Tonga team over the weekend..

Nice guys, they seemed super excited to be there.

Wow that must have been a surprise for you!

That is definitely one thing HKRL can offer people. A bit of adventure and to see some of the world. That's certainly the case for the people fro Thailand, PNG and Tonga who have visited.
