Yep, it was supposed to service the new stadium that was going to be built over the Kippax lake area besides servicing the Cricket Ground. It’s a wonder they haven’t tried to reroute the light rail across this white elephant of a bridge now, lol.

From memory, when the Victor Trumper stand was built didn't the SCG Trust 'promise' to rebuild the old SCG scoreboard outside the ground due to its historical significance? That would have been fantastic to see and something we could show our kids for years to come. It would have become an attraction.

But nothing happened. What a waste and yet another pork pie told.

Australia could team up with NZ and host the first 'Oceania' Cup. This would be significant for FIFA as they have then taken the cup to all regions. Yes, Australia is in Asia for Football but in reality, Australia is located in Oceania and without Australia involved, no Oceania nation will every host the cup.

The big winners for the games growth would be in Perth, Adelaide, Canberra (maybe) and Newcastle (maybe) as they would end up with far superior rectangular stadium than what they have now. Sydney will hardly benefit unless it leads to a Southern stadium being built and Brisbane not at all.

Perth would be great as we would likely end up with a 40k new stadium next to Optus, Nib would be used for training until after event when it could be torn down. By 2040 which is likely earliest we would see it here it will be ready for tearing down. Likewise in Adelaide and Canberra.

Out of interest who pays for all the infrastructure and stadium costs for an even like the soccer WC, is it the Feds?

Townsvilles stadium was only going to get upgrades (signifigant ones admittedly) if Oz won the WC, while the renderings looked decent enough, the stadium was still going to be in the same area of Tvl, which is 25kms-ish to the west of the CBD.

Kinda glad we didn’t get the WC now as the new NQ stadium is going to be built in a prime CBD location.

Yeh that is the other thing, some stadiums might actually end up worse, maybe by 2040 the NRL clubs will need 40k stadiums but at our current rate of crowd growth it is unlikely so we could have ended up with a number of over sized stadiums.

I thought your claim of 25 klms (ish) from the Townsville CBD to 1300 smiles stadium seemed off (spent 8 years living in the Ville with the army), a quick google check confirms it is only 15.6 kilometres. Carry on

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian breaks silence on NRL home games at Brookvale Oval

Robbie Patterson, Manly Daily
June 20, 2018 12:00am

PREMIER Gladys Berejiklian has broken her silence on the future of NRL home games at Brookvale Oval, declaring the Sea Eagles are free to play where they want.

But the Sea Eagles’ No. 1 ticket holder stopped short of throwing her support behind Brookvale as her preferred destination.

In response to questions sent last week, the Premier said on Monday: “The Manly Sea Eagles determine where the Manly Sea Eagles play.”

This follows a KPMG business case, being used to justify a $730 million knockdown and rebuild of Allianz Stadium and the $810 million refurbishment of ANZ Stadium, suggested games be moved from Brookvale to the new stadium at Moore Park.

It also suggested deterioration by neglect, to force the Sea Eagles there.

“In line with the stadia strategy, the government has stated its commitment to not fund non-state-owned venues,” the report said. “As such, these Sydney-based teams will begin to require new venues to host home games as their stadiums become unsuitable.”

Wakehurst state MP Brad Hazzard criticised the plan, saying it had been tried before and failed.

“It was clear when the original policy was floated to push games to the bigger stadia that it wouldn’t work for the Sea Eagles or the fans on the beaches. I made that clear a long while ago,” he said.

Sea Eagles legend Max Krilich has urged the Premier and her government to “get off their behinds and give Manly what they deserve — a stadium upgrade”.

The former club captain said a 40-year wait was long enough.

“Parramatta Stadium is going to have been built twice. Why?” he said.

“I’ll tell you why — because it is a marginal seat that’s why. They are only worried about their own politics.”

He said moving home games would not work. “Give Manly a decent ground and decent team and we will get 25,000 people to every game,” he said. ‘They would get 5000 to 6000 if it moves.

“I don’t know how KPMG would say that it would be profitable. They’re bean counters, they don’t know anything about rugby league.”

The Sea Eagles remain firmly committed to staying at Brookvale and say they were promised $10 million by former premier Mike Baird. The club had been banking on the money along with $12.5 million promised by Warringah MP Tony Abbott to upgrade its facilities.

They had also applied to upgrade the club’s Narrabeen training facility at Sydney Academy of Sport as part of a centre of excellence fund.

It has since been said by Sports Minister Stuart Ayres that only the centre of excellence fund was available.

Ms Berejiklian did not respond to questions on funding.

But Mr Hazzard said he believed funding had been promised for Brookvale Oval’s upgrade.

“I could be wrong but my interpretation at the time was that it was $10 million straight out to come to the upgrade of the stadium,” he said.

“I thought, perhaps mistakenly, that the centre of excellence funds were a possibility as an extra not as the mainstay.”

He said he would “very much so” be making his sentiments known to the Premier and Sports Minister.

Jesus, Manly's position on this is down-right delusional!!!

"We know you have a clearly stated position of not funding single tenant stadiums or stadiums NOT owned by the State, but you should make an exception for us because we feel entitled to it. In return we offer you nothing."

If they went to Gosford Stadium, at least they might have a CHANCE of a redevelopment. GS is council owned, but it is in a marginal electorate for both the State and Fed seat. And being out of Sydney would get them some bonus good will for boosting regional economies.

Why in gods name to they think Booky has a divine right to a redevelopment? It offers NOTHING!!

North Queensland Stadium Sat 23rd June 2018. It’s a hard stadium to get a good shot. Need a telephoto lens from up Castle Hill instead of a phone camera.

OK, it isn’t in Manly and it’s a *very* tight site, but IF you were a State Government, and IF you wanted to build a new 22,000-27,000 seat stadium north of the harbour, surely you would have to look at Chatswood Oval? It’s right next to a major rail hub where both the cross harbour CitiRail and the North-West Metro meet, and it is right on the doorstep of a major commercial area for pre and post game dining, pubs etc.

Nice in theory but there doesn’t look like there is anywhere near enough room for a stadium. You would need heaps more surrounding room to actually build grandstands and concourse. Appears too hemmed in by the train line and surrounding buildings.

Build the west stand over the rail line? Like Lansdowne Road but more in the style of multi-level corporate centre at the new Western Sydney Stadium.

Yeah but much too big for this site. Think it’d struggle to fit much more than 25,000. Still perfectly good for a NRL home ground and ARC or A-League games.

Oh shit yeah, absolute no chance a stadium of that size could fit there, just a passing comment.

Leigh.

Gordon cricket club might have a few objections

Agree though, I like the idea of Chatswood if you could make it work.

Perhaps semi circle style stands in the east & west side could fit? The parts that look particularly tight are the south west corner & the north east corner, if the stand curved at the back it might just fit.
