Shane Flanagan

So Mary and Griffin are better coaches? Flanno has delivered the biggest prize and has proven he has the chops. Who on earth (excluding Bellamy) would you swap him for? Granted the souffs bloke is going well, but he’s been there 5 minutes.
I'd go for that Wolfe bloke.
everyone loves him and as I understand it is the attacking coach at Souths this year.

If we are so far in front of 90% of teams why do we lose to the broncos? Why do we just beat a warriors team off a forward pass?
If we had barba we win last year. Maybe maybe not. Isn’t it Shane’s job to have his squad and adapt to a style that suits it.
Shouldn’t he adjust for rule changes and manage his bench according to the game flow?

God no.
Dragons will go nowhere whilst Mary and hunt are there.
Griffin is the face of the panthers but he isn’t the coach. Much like mal wasn’t the Queensland coach.

Dont get me wrong this team isn’t far off and I think can go a long way again, however, if they fail it will be solely on Flanno. Just like I’ll eat my words if they do win it all and say it was on Flanno.

My biggest gripe is that, we could be better. We could be winning more games, more comfortably. This is on Shane.
He has been there a long time and staleness creeps in.
spot on mate.
good post.

old habits die hard.
needed a string of losses before the coach realised we had some ferrari's in the garage.
then we see bird and holmes given their shot.
now we are looking at the non fuel injected carburetor versions again.
morris twins.
great players but past their prime.
im more concerned about the talent that strolled out the door in his time.
maybe one premiership is underachieving.
imo we have slipped as a team.
solely on the coach.

I think you’re overstating the impact of the coach. The coach that got bundled out in 2015 with a team that couldn’t score points was the same coach that won the title in 2016 with all the moons aligning with injuries and players finding their mojo.

We can see what he’s trying to do with Moyza and injuries have not been kind this year.

Considering the state of the club he inherited, Flanagan has done an amazing job. I say this as someone who felt he should not have survived the peptide issue as he was ultimately accountable for the football department.

Flanagan has built a strong club with excellent junior pathways and a culture that competes regardless of the resources available. The winning of the first comp in the club's history is a phenomenal achievement but this is not the fundamental issue. He has built the club ready to succeed for the medium term. He actually cares about the club. He recruits well and manages the cap very well.

Flanagan has issues as a coach that he could develop. He isn't particularity innovative and doesn't coach scintillating football to watch. His plans tend to lack flexibility. The biggest challenge he will face is transitioning the club in the post Gallen/Lewis era. Gallen has been a dominant figure at the club for a long time and Flanagan will need to guide the team and build the next group of key leaders.

Criticising Flanagan over individual games is very small picture stuff. Making decisions to move on a coach because they lose to the Broncos is not a serious analysis.

My sense is that he will get another contract and by that time I can see him looking at a Gould style GM Football style role as football staff will become more specialised and larger.

Flanno also seems to have long term plans for the club, when you look at the damage short term views for immediate gains can have on clubs - Knights with Bennet, Dogs with Hasler to name a few.

This is critical. Short-term focus can really damage clubs. Newy were stuffed for years by Bennett/Tinkler, Dogs will be screwed for years.

Flanagan is not perfect by any means but you want to have an exceptional candidate to move him on for.

Because it is competition time, not finals time. Referees , home games , turn around times, injuries.
Job of the coach is to get the team into top 4 with a game plan managing all those variables.
Then the new comp starts, 3 or 4 games. That is why we lost last year. No Barba & dual hookers, in the finals.
The result of specific games through the year is actually irrelevant for mine. What is important is amount of games won.
We get all hands on deck at 99% fit, 80 minute hooker, we will be untouchable come finals.

Everyone has made good points. Both to keep and to get rid of.

I’m not basing my assessment on one game Weapon, last season plus this season is the gauge.

See what happens by October. I don’t really care who coaches it won’t change my support of the club.

And if we all wanted fluff, we’d be on forever forum
