Well, that’s a fair amount of hyperbole.

Dufty does well against lowly placed sides. This is the type of occasion I’d expect him to do well.
He’s scored a double against the sharks - does that count?
That’s s different topic altogether.

Yeah, happy that Saints won but it was far from a wonderful performance. Sides such as Souths and Melbourne wouldn’t be too perturbed.
Souths will be perturbed enough by only scoring one try vs tigers tonight. After 75 minutes. And letting them score 4.

We should indeed be happy to be back in the winners list again . This game , IMO has shown ( as I said after lasts weeks lost ) that this is a different Dragons team compared to previous seasons ) in spirit and in confidence as well as all all round ability.

Still a lot of improvement required before we are once again , as that gentleman from the Storm commented- the NRL’s benchmark , but the Dragons are on the way .

You have entirely missed the point...As Fans we give credit to our players when they do something good...Quinlan is not even in the same ball park as Dufty.....bad comparison...anyway let us all enjoy the win...WE ALL SUPPORT THE SAME TEAM...the operative Term being "SUPPORT "........

Yawn. Yes we support the same team so I'll deal with deficiencies. BTW I do rate Quinny as a better player but each to their own xx

Just some notes:
I think we win that game by 30 if Friz played.
I thought LL had one of his better games, particularly after having to play the 80 mins. Some errors yeah, but he did ok.
We actually played a debutant for a whole game.
It's the first time we have won in Townsville since 2005, a first for all players (Nighty maybe).
Grahams body is wearing out, he needs a week off sooner than later, maybe not next week but definitely soon.
Sims and De Belin, when your hit you stay hit.
We won playing in the alternative strip (is it the first time this year?)
Widdop didn't take the easy 2 points and went for the try, didn't happen but I'm happy that they went for it, which is a change.

Finally, in the team victory song, what's going on in Lafai's pants!!!!!!!!!!

Look every team has weaknesses. That’s part of what the salary cap does, at least in the way it has been implemented. In 2010 we won without recognised props playing significant minutes in the finals and the best 1-5 of the modern era. What seemed to be a weakness on the bench and hooker was a huge strength in the GF. The halves were extraordinarily underrated.

This team has been put together differently. It could be the team to win or get closest to win, even though the outside backs may be replaced in the next two to three years. There are no ready made players ready to go, right now, as outstanding as they look at lower levels. They are not ready for week in, week out football.

The Storm, Roosters and Sharks are the main worries based on starting sides and depth. We sit about around fourth or fifth probably but our best players could outplay any of these teams on their day, as they have already proved. Our pack is the best since the 90s, especially if Host, Leilua, Sele can provide support when needed.

The closest to perfection in the competition may be the Storm and if they get 1-17 fit, they just have to get the halfback choice right and avoid any clampdown from the referees. No team is safe with what is happening with the referees.

BTW they still benefit from being assembled illegally. At best this only ends when all the players retire but the reality is that their presence has already influenced the next generation. They have clones ready to go.

Makes me sick to see Hoffman being congratulated for coming back to the Storm. It’s a kick in the face to the NRL and the other teams, being allowed to go overseas one year and come back to “win” a premiership. I don’t care what he does beyond that. He’s stained. Another dirty grubby Storm player. Traitor to the Tigers. Main reason why they were a contender in 2005. Hoffman is pure scum just like Slater and Smith. End rant.

There are 3 things they have to fix otherwise latemail is spot on.
1. Catch the fricking ball from the kick off, every fricking time without exception.
2. Give the ball to Dufty at least once every set in attack. In the second half tonight he barely touched it after killing it in the first half. WTF?
3. Learn how to get a repeat set, our efforts tonight were mostly woeful.

MATCH REPORT

Dragons back on top with win over Cowboys

St George Illawarra Dragons have moved to the top of the Telstra Premiership table following a 24-10 win over North Queensland on Saturday night.

Following South Sydney's shock loss to Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium, the Dragons needed to win by 14 points or more to take top spot off the Bunnies on for and against.

Running in four tries to one in Townsville, Paul McGregor's men also snapped a worrying two-game losing streak.

The Dragons started in ominous fashion, capitalising with a repeat set off the back of a Cowboys penalty to post the first points of the evening after winger Jason Nightingale dived over out wide.

Paul McGregor's men then allowed the hosts to play themselves into the contest due to poor discipline, with two penalties converted by Johnathan Thurston resulting in a 6-4 scoreline in favour of the Red V.

Moments later the Cowboys went 10-6 in front when Gavin Cooper strolled over virtually untouched close to the line while Dragons' Origin forward Jack De Belin was in the sin bin.

Leading into halftime, errors began to creep into the contest but the Dragons steadied and regained the lead in the 32nd minute when fullback Matt Dufty hit a yawning gap before scoring under the posts.

Match highlights: Cowboys v Dragons – Round 19, 2018

Dufty was at his evasive best, shrugging off an attempted tackle from Te Maire Martin before planting the ball down.

De Belin and Ben Hunt combined six minutes later to put Tariq Sims over as the Dragons went to the break leading 18-10.

Debutant Jordan Pereira put his name on the tryscoring list 10 minutes after half-time courtesy of a brilliant left foot kick by Gareth Widdop.

With Thurston and debutant Jake Clifford calling the shots, the Cowboys threw plenty at the Dragons in the final 30 minutes but were unable to crack the defence.

News & Notes: The Dragons won their first game in Townsville since 2005... Winger Jordan Pereira had scored 16 tries in 16 games in the Intrust Super Premiership this year before scoring on debut tonight for the Dragons... Jake Clifford made his NRL debut for the Cowboys... John Asiata left the field for an HIA in the first half and passed his test... The Cowboys have won only two from 11 against teams currently in the top eight.

Report, Video | St George Illawarra Dragons back on top of NRL table after downing North Queensland Cowboys 24-10

  • St George Illawarra have edged back to the top of the NRL table by the barest of margins – for now – with a 24-10 win over North Queensland on Saturday night.

With South Sydney’s loss to the Wests Tigers earlier in the night, the Dragons needed to win by 14 points to return to the summit.

Much like their performance, the Dragons did what they had to do. While not at their best, St George Illawarra were much-improved on the side beaten by the Tigers at Kogarah last weekend.

Without Nene Macdonald and Tyson Frizell, Luciano Leilua and Jordan Pereira came into the team as the Dragons took the lead inside four minutes.

Matt Dufty showed great footwork at pace to breeze past Johnathan Thurston before he found Jason Nightingale with a cut out pass for the winger to score out wide.

The Cowboys hit back with a Thurston penalty goal after 10 minutes before a bizarre piece of play ended with Jack de Belin in the sin bin.

Another Thurston attempt at penalty goal hit the post with the Cowboys securing the loose ball. But de Belin was removed from the field after holding down the Cowboys player for too long, allowing Thurston another chance to add two points.

Despite their strong start the Dragons were self destructing with five penalties and three errors inside the opening 20 minutes. A Leilua forward pass 30 metres out from his own line gifted the Cowboys possession, with Gavin Cooper eventually barging over from dummy half to give the hosts the lead.

But with nine minutes before half-time Dufty stole the lead back for the Dragons.

Gareth Widdop held up a pass beautifully to put the fullback through a hole. Te Maire Martin looked to have made an outstanding try-saving tackle, only for Dufty to jump up and score under the posts.

And the Dragons had time to extend their advantage before the break when Widdop sliced through to allow Tariq Sims to crash over.

St George Illawarra pushed out to a 24-10 lead 10 minutes into the second half on the back of some Widdop magic.

The Cowboys failed to deal with a Ben Hunt bomb, with Nightingale batting the loose ball back to Widdop.

The five-eighth summed up the situation in an instant and put in a kick for the corner with his left foot, allowing Pereira to mark his NRL debut with a try.

The win saw the Dragons regain the competition lead by a solitary for and against point.

St George Illawarra could fall back to second on Sunday should Melbourne beat the New Zealand Warriors.

But this result was important regardless of the Dragons’ position on the table. They may not be breathing fire just yet, but the Dragons are marching in the right direction again.

    Leader Scoreboard

St George Illawarra Dragons 24 (Jason Nightingale, Matt Dufty, Tariq Sims, Jordan Pereira tries. Gareth Widdop four goals)

    defeated

North Queensland Cowboys 10 (Gavin Cooper try. Johnathan Thurston three goals)

    at 1300 Smiles Stadium, Townsville

Leader man of the match: Gareth Widdop (Dragons)

Dragons’ next three: Roosters (away), Warriors (home – Wollongong), Eels (away)

Good post but the Storm are safe from the referees, Billy can knock it on and still score, forward passes are permitted from dummy half and they can always, and I mean always, rely on a penalty when coming out of their own half.

No denying he has speed. So did Quinlan and he got hammered on this site. Sheens has given him a 2-3 year deal and it's amazing what a good coach can do for a player. I have respect for your opinion but not against against another fan who might have a differing opinion. BTW Dufty's try tonight was pretty damn good. His size and defense is a concern though. It's basically non existent.
I don't care one bit about Dufty's supposed defensive weaknesses but I want to see him involved much more in attack, he barely injected himself tonight, particularly in the second half, but when he does he is easily our best attacking weapon, easily.

Souths were due for a loss. Today’s result will be good for them.
I think it may be the beginning of their downward spiral jimmy.
Storm won’t get any better.
Souths won’t get any better.
Warriors, not in Sydney.
Panthers, too many injuries
Broncos, possibly......
Leaves Saints, Sharks or Roosters.

I think Soufs scored a close and lucky win vs the cows.
Storm?.......I need to check how they did......but there is only ONE ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA.

Melbourne can suck their cheating rings.
