That NQ article is a little misleading. There won’t be car parks at the stadium like the current dung heap but there is currrently a car park over the road at the new joint, there will also be parking within walking distance (im tipping the v8 track area will be utilised to some extent) and there’s a decent sized shopping centre about 1.5kms away that they will put shuttle buses on like there is from the Willows shopping centre to 1300’s.

Townsville to expand NRL “game day” experience at new North Queensland Stadium

August 08, 2018

FOOD trucks, light entertainment and other family-friendly activities could be set up around the North Queensland Stadium precinct as part of a plan to expand the “game day” experience.

A group of Townsville CBD leaders is collaborating to develop a range of pre and post-game activities for NRL fans to enjoy once the new North Queensland Stadium opens in the heart of the city.

The North Queensland Stadium Activation Working Group includes owner of Jam Corner, Matt Merrin, who said there were a number of ideas to engage visitors who will be travelling to the CBD for games.

“Venues such as the Palmer St precinct and City Lane are located within easy walking distance from the North Queensland Stadium and we want to provide patrons with the opportunity to enjoy a great meal, a night of entertainment that includes going to the stadium for an event,” he said.

The chairman of the working group, Townsville MP Scott Stewart, said the activities and entertainment would be designed to appeal to a range of visitors, from young families to die-hard North Queensland Cowboys fans.

“Anyone who comes to events at the new stadium, we’re looking at what we have to do to encourage them to spend some time in the city beforehand or go to the particular event and then come back into the CBD area,” Mr Stewart said.

“We’ve got to put into place opportunities for people to hang around to engage in entertainment, to engage in food. It could be pop-up food vans in various locations.

“We’ve got to have a variety (of options) in what we do and make it very affordable, particularly for young families who might be on a strict budget.”

Mr Stewart said the group was considering holding an open day once the stadium was complete so people could visit it and gain an understanding of how the new system would work.

“What currently happens is people get into their car, they drive to the stadium, they get out and watch the game or event, get back in the car and drive home,” he said.

“You won’t be able to do this at the new stadium because there’ll be no onsite parking.

“An open day would encourage people from the community to come in, get used to that transport system, know where the buses are going to terminate, find out where their seats are for the Cowboys games, check out all the facilities, way before the actual event starts.”

Mr Stewart said North Queenslanders should think about turning an event or game day into a “whole experience”.

The North Queensland Stadium is due to be completed ahead of the 2020 NRL season and will have the capacity to seat 25,000.

In “concert mode” the stadium will be able to accommodate 40,000 people.
For people in NQ this is so massive. I couldn’t be more pumped for this.

Looks like there will actually be seats in those corners next to the western stand @Suitman, they would want to be giving them tickets away......

Lol. I was going to post the same thing to you @beave ………..Maybe the seats will be angled up to accommodate viewing sight lines, or maybe they will put seats in and sell them as restricted viewing?
I suppose we'll just have to wait and see mate.

Beautiful stadium but i'm still shocked at those NW and SW upper corners.

I presume it’s just a economic compromise.

In order to have those corners have complete sight lines you’d have to have set the corporate facilities further back. I’m guessing they see the corporate facilities as more valuable than the lost seats.

The easier solution would have been to adjust the angle of the turns on the cheaper stands and bring them in to the front of the western. Would have lost a few seats overall but at least all the seats available you could sell at the correct price. The way they've done it, at least half of those top tiers mentioned you are only going to be able to 1/3 of the field at best.

That would’ve been a more expensive build though, wouldn’t it?

This way everything is uniform, presumably that makes the process cheaper.

The best solution now is just to not put seats in those spots.

At least it’s on the TV side.

The stadium needs to have the number 3 in front of it's capacity. Sounds more impressive.

If you take those seats out and it drops to 29,700 it's not the same.

Fair point, it’s a pretty minor issue in the end.

Will easily be the best club ground in the NRL.

Well your mob ,decided to put a spanner in the works ,put in a few dollars to ensure ANZ remained a fumbleball oval.
It's plainly obvious you have zero idea, how fumble ball stuffed it for the rectangular codes,They don't even use the place.
Do some research fumbler.

Agreed Bob Carr took afl cash to keep it oval in late 1990s

Nrl should have been owning project years before that

Written by a typical one eyed ,live in a bubble fumbler.
The State Govt received a token amount from the AFL.The Govt should have told the AFL to get knotted, the ground was to be changed to rectangular for 3 rectangular codes ,in the first place after the OPs.

The GWS took State Govt cash, for Blacktown and the local Council's money, running into the millions,in order to train ,live and occasionally play there.
Then they turned tail and moved to Breakfast Creek and the Showground.
The Swans have had hundreds of millions spent on the SCG upgrade.

Still playing the spin doctor for the AFL.The AFL are Jonny come lateleys and work on the entitlement philosophy.

The grubby AFL sucks taxpayers money regularly from Govt, and has been doing so for yonks..
It's only now the rectangular codes are finally getting some of it.And deservedly so.

If the NRL had an idea at the time .. they would have made sure the nsw gov didn't need the afl cash

Utter spin bollocks. There were 3 rectangular codes not just one in the mix.

The State Govt didn't go begging to the AFL for cash, the AFL intruded wanting their own way and offered a token, repeat token amount. And guess what ,then they flicked ANZ because Swan's fans hated it.The rectangular codes are stuck FTM with a oval.
ANZ was to be rectangular, there was absolutely no need for any of the 3 rectangular codes
to intervene.That was the promise.
If the State Govt had any nouse, they would have told the AFL to get stuffed.ANZ was intended to become a rectangular stadium after the Olympics and the entitlement code moved in to create the problems it has for their rectangular code competition.

GWS were plain out and out deceptive liars ,using the taxpayers' and ratepayers' money to set up a training ground, then move to Homebush. Then get a new you beaut stadium at Spot the Less stadium.

Geez you've been indoctrinated like those in Victoria.
Imagine the rectangular codes hypothetically arranging for the MCG to be rectangular. There would be a meltdown.

You need to do research and not slavishly boot lick everything the AFL says, and ignore at times what they end up doing.

The promise wasn't delivered on because the AFL got in, worked hard and pulled political strings whilst the NRL sat back like dopes and did nothing. That would be fine so long as the NRL learned something but they didn't. AFL is still kicking the NRLs arse in political influence 20 years later.
