unfortunately i missed most of it, from what i saw jeremy smith looked back to his best and blair looked much improved. chambers had another good game too.

from qrl.com.au...

A DRAMA-filled final 10 minutes has seen Norths snatch a 26-18 win against Burleigh at Bishop Park, putting the Devils back in the hunt for a top five position.

The upset result came after Burleigh led 12-4 early in the match. However the Bears imploded with a series of penalties and finished the match with 12 men as skipper Ryan Gundry and referee Luke Potter staged a running battle.

In a thrill-a-minute climax to the game, Norths held a slender 20-18 advantage when young five-eighth Jason Poppi set sail for what looked like a length-of-the-field try. However, veteran Burleigh winger Aseri Laing came from the clouds to perform a stunning cover tackle, keeping the game in the balance.

The Devils retained the ball and continued to attack, with centre Joel Thompson then putting Anthony Perkins over in the corner. Referee Potter denied the try, claiming Thompson had been held before offloading the ball.

Again the result was left to rest on a knife’s edge and the threat of a late Burleigh comeback loomed large in the air.

That evaporated entirely with five minutes left on the clock, as the Bears were punished for a bizarre sequence of offences by Laing. Placed on report for a high shot, Laing refused to respond to the referee when called out for discussion.

Potter issued several warnings to the 32-year-old without any response and eventually lost his patience, sin-binning Laing and effectively ending his involvement in the contest.

Norths now had the overlap and they tried to exploit it at every opportunity. In the 75th minute Papua New Guinean winger Georg Kepa went within inches on the left side, only to be pushed into touch just before the corner.

On their next set in possession the Devils then tested the other side and winger Perkins was again cut down inches from the tryline. As disjointed as Burleigh was in attack, the coastal side remained strong in defence.

They eventually cracked with two minutes remaining, as Norths swung the ball from side-to-side, ending in a try out wide to prolific backrower Sam Tagataese.

Clear jubilation was present on the faces of the Devils when the fulltime hooter sounded, marking their win this year over a top five side.

While teen centre Will Chambers received the ABC Man of the Match, his backline ally Perkins was another clear standout, posting two tries and making good yardage from dummy-half.

Statistics told the story for Burleigh, asked to perform 104 more tackles than the opposition as they conceded 11 tries to four over the course of the game.

Next Saturday sees Burleigh tackle Tweed Heads at Pizzey Park in the Gold Coast derby at 2pm. Norths is away to Easts at Langlands Park, also on Saturday at 3pm.

NORTHS 26 (Anthony Perkins 2, Will Chambers, Sam Tagataese, Jeremy Smith tries; Liam Foran 3 goals) d BURLEIGH 18 (Ben Black, Nick Parfitt, Martin Griese tries; Nick Parfitt 3 goals) at Bishop Park.

A STINT in the sin bin for representative forward Scott Alo proved costly for Ipswich as the Jets surrendered a 16-0 lead to draw 24-all with Norths at QLD Group Stadium.

Alo was the unlucky victim of repeated ruck infringements from both sides, sent to cool his heels after referee Michael Wise lost his patience in the 28th minute.

Picked to play in next week’s City Country showpiece, Alo had no choice but to watch from the sidelines as Norths ran in three tries while he was absent, grabbing a 22-20 lead at halftime.

After 42 points were scored in a tumultuous first half, the second stanza brought a meagre total of six points from both sides as the defence clamped down.

Chris Walker looked to have scored the winning try with just eight minutes left on the clock, swooping onto a sweetly-timed Ricky Bird grubber.

However the Jets were again cut down at the knees by penalties, with Liam Foran squaring up the match in the 75th minute for a stripping infringement.

In the dying moments both Foran and Josh Costello exchanged unsuccessful field goal attempts, frustrations spilling over to a scuffle in the final minute.

The stalemate on the fulltime siren was in stark contrast to the beginning of the contest, when tries to Donald Malone, Michael Ryan and Gordon Rattler had Ipswich well in front by the 12th minute.

Three Norths players arrived late to the game after being stuck in traffic and the Devils were slow to feel their way into the contest. Lamentable tackling and ill discipline immediately had the Devils on the back foot.

A Georg Kepa try on the 16-minute mark provided some hope for the visitors, but Ipswich immediately shot back with Malone’s second try of the game.

The period that followed proved the most decisive in the game. Norths forward Aaron Bulow was forced to the sidelines with a gushing facial wound, yet it was Ipswich that began haemorrhaging badly.

Referee Wise called both captains together for a warning about indiscretions in the play-the-ball, but it was barely a minute later when Alo was caught out and given 10 in the bin.

From there Norths’ Jason Poppi set up a try for centre Joel Thompson with a well-weighted kick, backed up three minutes later with another try to Kepa, this time from a handy Thompson offload.

The momentum shift was remarkable and the Devils capitalised further when Will Chambers sliced through, jinking off his right foot on the tryline.

From then until Walker’s try at the death, more than 40 minutes passed as the combatants slugged it out; a desperate cover tackle from Devils prop Brendan Afitu on a runaway Joel Reithmuller shown to be doubly vital in the final wash-up.

On Saturday week Ipswich tackles Tweed Heads at Carrara Stadium at 3.15pm, while Norths travel to Rockhampton to face the Central Comets at 7.30pm.

IPSWICH 24 (Donald Malone 2, Gordon Rattler, Chris Walker, Michael Ryan tries; Chris Walker 2 goals) d NORTHS 24 (Georg Kepa 2, Joel Thompson, Will Chambers tries; Liam Foran 4 goals) at North Ipswich Reserve.
