    It might help if you took the whistle off the pocket ref and left him to be like a roaming touch judge. It wouldn't be that different to what we have now but it may minimise the mixed messages they can give off on occasion now since the pocket ref seems to take control for parts of the game...

    Penalty Differentials

    You're spot on about the cheat sheets. When you're looking for a penalty you will find it,even if it's not really there. So like you said, they should be refereeing each game based on what's happening in front of them. Besides, they ref the same players every week, they know how they play...

    I'm not too familiar with rugby union but it seems they blow a lot of penalties. Do the players learn and stop giving them away in that game?

    What are the requirements on being appointed to the Match Review Committee and Judiciary? From what I've seen it seems to only be ex footballers, are they the only people who can get the job?

    I know that in NZ they have their own officials referee the Warriors NSW Cup games when they play at home, so we could see a Kiwi ref or two in first grade some time soon and hopefully a couple in the World Cup.

    Well obviously they would make it look accidental, I was just pointing out that if they were to go out of their way to do it on purpose thinking it's their ball no matter what, that the referee does have an option to penalise them. It is extremely unlikely to happen, but if a player was stupid...

    There is also a rule that says it is misconduct to do anything that is contrary to the true spirit of the game, I would argue that deliberately throwing the ball at a ref for a repeat set would fall under that category. So if it is clearly deliberate the referee could penalise the player for it.

    Refs must feel like they cant win

    This is a good point, people hear Gould as an "expert" commentator and take it on board as true, and it's a shame because some people I've seen get so angry by agreeing with him. They'll get so worked up that it takes all the enjoyment out of the game for them.

    I had a question about the rule where a player can't take a kick at goal if he wasn't on the field when the try was scored. I read through the rule and I couldn't manage to find a mention of that rule in it, so it is an NRL rule or does it apply to all grades of footy?
