NRL introduces largest shake-up of junior rugby league in three decades

I refereed a few years back and that was essentially my attitude. Unless it was blatant, I would let it slide. After all, at that age it's all about the fun that the kid has. When I started getting to 9's and 10's (dependent on grade) I would be less lenient.

Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

http://video.news.com.au/v/211109/NRL-360-Tony-Archer-on-controversial-referee-decisions For those playing at home. I think there is a lot of advantages in broadcasters actually playing the referee/touch judge/video referee audio live rather than commentators giving an often uninformed opinion...

Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

How so? The penalty is the shot in front after the try scoring procedure is complete (try & conversion). Its totally independant to the try. In my previous quote I meant that a penalty for allowing the try was not regarded as a penalty for the infringement, but rather a penalty for poor...

Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

Tell me how in those situations a player is penalised twice for the same offence Topou was denied the chance to score I agree, but the advantage was played and the try was scored anyway. Negating any professional foul.

Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

A referee warning a player is a form of disipline, whether you like it or not. You are mistaking a penalty try with a potential 8 point try. An 8 point try is given because a try has been scored, regardless of the infringement. The penalty is given in addition to the 6 points on offer for...

Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

I am not debating the fact that Topou was taken out. That?s a clear cut penalty ? however. Pretty obvious what the advantage was. Cummins decided, at his discretion, to not temporary dismiss Reynolds. Note the rule above where it says ?Allowing play to proceed does not mean that the...

Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

Yes correct. The player was not penalised because the referee allowed the advantage, in which a try is scored. Not an official penalty, but a penalty nonetheless. When you think of it, isn't been scored against a penalty of bad defence? Had Reynolds been given 10, he would have been "penalised"...

Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

I see your point, but as the rules stand (as per the referee guidelines) a player can't be sin binned while you award a penalty try. Has to be a send off or no action on the offender

Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

You can apply the logic of if a player was taken without the ball outside of a try scoring opportunity (eg on halfway) than a penalty is sufficient. If that player is taken out but his team mate runs away with it and scores, do you go back and award the penalty and send the offending player in...

Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

It's only a professional foul if the foul prevented a try scoring situation. Since a try was scored in the same play it is no longer a professional foul, so the sin bin does not apply. Referee took the advantage. Had Reynolds did something like knock the attacking player out with an elbow or...

Ref Watch 2014 (aka the Skeepe Thread)

Refs only have an option to bin if a try was not scored. They rule on what the greatest advantage is. A try vs 12 men? You'll take the try every day. In relation to discipline, the only option that the ref has (protocol wise) is a send off, which was not worthy in this case. Correct call...

7 tackle try - NQ dudded again!

Incorrect. If the referees believes that a player intentially dropped the ball for the purpose of a drop kick it is not regarded as a knock on, but a kick in general play. There is a miconception that a drop kick must only be used for the attempt of a drop goal. But a drop kick is regarded...

    why wasn't toupou's try an 8 pointer?

Same reason that you can't sin bin a player and awarding the 8 point try. A referee has the option of one or the other depending on severity, never both.

    offside rule.

Players who are offside from the kick (and who is not deemed downtown) must stay 10m from the player attempting to field a catch and allow that player to travel 10m in any direction before attempting to make a tackle. If the player attempting to catch the ball drops it whilst an offside...
