Cowboys 24 - Eels 20 - Full Time in Toyota Cup

For the second time in as many weeks the Pirtek Parramatta Eels have surrendered a lead in the Toyota Cup, losing 24-20 to North Queensland tonight at Parramatta Stadium.

Both sides scored four tries, the100% kicking of Cowboys second rower Troyden Watene proving the difference in the finish.

Watene also scored a try, finishing with 12 points for the game.

For the Eels Domenic Nasso crossed twice, while the Cowboys scored the decisive try eight minutes from full time through prop Dylan Smith to secure a four point victory.

Teenage Titans humbled by Rabbitohs

The Gold Coast Titans’ NYC side has fallen to its second successive defeat in a humbling 50-6 loss to South Sydney at Skilled Park today.

After suffering a surprise six-point loss to Penrith last week, the third-placed Titans were hoping to bounce back against the Rabbitohs (8th) on their home turf.

But the visitors were on fire from start to finish, running in a total of nine tries including six in the opening half as they established a commanding 34-nil lead at the break.

Adding salt to the Titans’ wounds were injuries to interchange forwards Scott McLennan and Luke Page.

Roosters Toyota Cup hit winning form

The Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup side have scored a comprehensive 42-12 victory over the Cronulla Sharks at Toyota Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The dominant seven tries to two performance from the Tricolours was lead by fullback Luke Towers who bagged 22 points of his own.

Two tries in the opening 10 minutes gave the visitors an early advantage but when the Sharks sounded a warning shot to get within two points the Tricolours set about dominating proceedings.

18 unanswered second half points ensured the Roosters would bring the two points back to Bondi.

Tired Young Broncos Beaten Narrowly

THE WOW Brisbane Broncosunder-20s have been narrowly defeated in Newcastle tonight after a marathon day of travelling.

The side was forced to wait hours at Brisbane Airport after their flight was delayed and only reached the ground 30 minutes before kick-off.

It proved costly as the Newcastle Knights ran them down 28-26.

Bronco centre Dale Copley (pictured) added his second try of the night soon after halftime and also punched the Broncos out to a solid 22-0 lead.

But the Knights would not fold, running in two tries in the first 20 minutes to bring the score back to 22-12.

But some great play from Gerard Beale allowed Komisi Umu to score his second of the night untouched in the corner, leaving it 26-12 with 25 minutes remaining.

The Knights again rallied, hooker Chris Marlborough burrowing over from dummy half to put the Knights within eight points with 17 minutes remaining.

They then closed to two points behind when Peter Mata’utia beat some shoddy defence to score and individual try, his conversion making it 26-24.

Mata’utia had a shot at penalty goal to tie the game up with eight minutes left, but sprayed it wide.

With five minutes left it was Mata’utia again, collecting a grubber in the corner to put his side in front for the first time in the match.

The Broncos may have arrived late to the ground, but they came out firing.

They scored after just a few minutes when Copley beat two defenders to cross in the corner.

Hunt raised the flags from the sideline and they had a perfect 6-0 start.

It was then Todd Murphy’s turn to go over, with Hunt again obliging for 12-0.

Right on halftime Umu cleaned up to score in the corner and the young Broncos trotted off to a handy 16-0 lead.

TOYOTA CUP MAKE IT SIX STRAIGHT

The Dragons Toyota Cup side have today won their sixth consecutive match defeating the Warriors 30-14 this afternoon at WIN Stadium.

The young Dragons scored five tries to the Warriors three.

In beautiful conditions the Toyota Cup side started the match well up against a big and strong Warriors side. A lot of the opening stages were played straight through the middle of the park with both sides just wanting to ease their way into the game.

The opening points of the match dame in the 16th minute with five-eighth Warwick Carter going over. It was front row forward Trent Merrin who created the opportunity after he fended of two defenders and got a short off-load away to Carter who then stepped off his left foot past one defender and went over to score. Beau Henry converted form 15m to the right of the uprights to put the Dragons in front 6-nil.

A piece of individual brilliance from hooker Mitch Rein set up the home side’s second try in the 23rd minute. 40m out from the Warriors line Rein scooted out from dummy-half splitting the Warriors defence and as he drew the fullback he turned the ball back on the inside to Henry Raiwalui who went over to score under the uprights. Henry again converted extending the lead out to 12-nil.

With nine minutes remaining in the first half the Dragons were able to go over for their third try through Beau Henry. It came off the back of back to back sets that had the Warriors on the back foot. Henry managed to burrow his way over and score. He then converted his own try and the Dragons went to the break leading 18-nil.

The second half started with the Warriors crossing just four minutes into the second half. It came through halfback Jody Henry who sliced through to score. Shaun Johnson converted with the score now 18-6 in favour of the Dragons.

The Warriors went over again with interchange player Ben Henry going over out wide in the 54th minute. Johnson couldn’t convert with the gap now closed to 18-10.

A great play was put on by the Dragons in the 58th minute with centre Kane Linnett crossing. It was play to the left hand side on the third play. Henry got the ball out quickly to Raiwalui who showed even quicker hands passing it on to Linnett who crashed over the top of the fullback to score. Henry again converted with the lead now out to 24-10.

In a second half played from end to end the Warriors were able to score their third try of the afternoon through centre Rusty Bristow. Bristow showed great strength to fend off a number of players before going over to score. Johnson couldn’t convert with the score remaining 24-14.

With 11 minutes remaining the home side were able to score a final try through Captain Jake Marketo. The Dragons earned a repeat set after a 40/20 from Henry and he then put the try on for Marketo with a nice short pass putting him through. Henry converted putting the match beyond doubt and the Dragons winning their sixth match in a row.

BULLDOGS BEAT WESTS TIGERS 30-27 IN TOYOTA CUP

Wests Tigers opened the scoring against the Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium in the Toyota Cup match in the second minute when prop Andrew Fifita crashed over from five metres out to score out wide.

Full-back Jake Mullaney converted the try for a 6-0 lead.

Wests Tigers are as per the team named on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs were denied a try in the 11th minute when centre Sama Sauvao and five-eighth Robert Lui held up a player over the line.

Mullaney is having a sound game at full-back. In the 14th minute, he regathered a grubber kick on his own line and beat two defenders to race 50 metres before being tackled.

His efforts were rewarded a minute later when from dummy half, and with the Bulldogs thinking he was going to pass to the right, Mullaney threw a two man cut out pass to an unmarked Coedi Towney for the winger to race behind the posts to score.

Mullaney converted the try for a 12-0 lead after 17 minutes.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the 19th minute after Wests Tigers were penalised for an incorrect play the ball. The home side took advantage to score through prop Martin Taupau when he ran nine metres to score out wide. The try was not converted to leave the Bulldogs trailing 12-4.

Wests Tigers were penalised on the first tackle from the re-start for a two man strip. The Bulldogs took advantage again when full-back Neenan Simpson beat two defenders to race down the sideline before flicking a one arm pass back inside for five-eighth Rhys Jack to step past a defender to score.

Lock Josh Reynolds failed to convert the try to leave the Bulldogs trailing 12-8.

The Bulldogs levelled at 12-12 two minutes before half-time when centre Josh Bishop sent winger Kele Nuisere over in the corner. Reynolds converted the try from the sideline for a 14-12 lead at half-time.

2nd Half
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 18-12 when Bishop scored in the corner. Half-back Matt Minto converted the try for a 20-12 lead.

A barnstorming run by forward Leivaha Pulu out wide saw him beat two defenders to dive over in the corner to score. Mullaney failed to convert from the sideline to leave Wests Tigers trailing 20-16 after 51 minutes.

Just when the good work to get back into the game was done, it went astray when a missed tackle by Sauvao saw Bishop score again out wide. Minto converted the try for a 26-16 lead after 54 minutes.

Wests Tigers hit back with a try to Mullaney out wide for a 26-20 lead.

A great crossfield kick by five-eighth Robert Lui saw the ball bounce up perfectly in-goal for Coedi Towney to score in the corner. Mullaney's conversion attempt from the sideline then bounced off the crossbar and over the posts for a goal to level at 26-26.

The Bulldogs then made a break down the middle of the field before losing the ball in tackle by centre Junior Roqica.

Two minutes later, half-back Darren Nicholls kicked a field goal from 30 metres out to give Wests Tigers a 27-26 lead.

Bulldogs prop Pakisonasi Afu then dropped the ball two metres from the tryline next to the posts.

The Bulldogs then enjoyed some luck when a grubber kick saw winger Minikura Tikinau take the ball only for Afu to strip the ball off him to dive over the line.

Minto failed to convert to give the Bulldogs a 30-27 lead with one minute remaining.

The Bulldogs held on inside the final minute to record victory, much to the heartache of the Wests Tigers players, coaching staff, and supporters.
