For Australian Schoolboys and related news - AIS, merit teams, regional reps etc.

So, it's coming up for that time of year again. The ASSRL Championships are being held in Newcastle this year, from this coming Sunday (8th July). This thread is for news, results and rep selections over the year, and to link players with their professional clubs to give fans an early idea of who they have coming through.

Folau is a cousin of the switcher, has some hype (obviously). Interesting article: http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport...m-of-playing-nrl/story-e6frep5x-1226290929198
By the looks of it this is Harrold's second Championships (as well as dominating U15s, he was at opens last year. Could be one in particular to watch).
Nikorima played U15s last year (and scored a few tries) so he's made it a year young I think.

I'm sure some of the experts on here will have certain info and the ones to watch.

Cheers for the reminder Didgi.

Dan Killian and Sam Harrold have both played Toyota Cup as well. Harrold was a stand out player in the MM Cup and apparently in the NYC trials as well. Haven't heard much of Killian. As expected, both are with the Titans.

Jayden Nikorima is a funny one. Wasn't good enough for Queensland U/16s yet made his way into a U/18s side. He's the younger brother of NYC Bronco Kodi and was the stand out player for Norths in CC. Can't recall who was selected over him for Qld but remember getting the impression that on form it seemed to be the right call but based on what I've heard, Jayden has more potential.

I don't think Moses has played NYC just yet, but it appears that'll only be a matter of time. Tigers have plenty of depth in the position with Sironen, Miller, Rudolph, Marshall-King & Madden.

Out of those two sides you'd have to say NSW CCC should be too experienced for their Queensland counterparts. NSW tend to be a year older (or more in some cases) & they use that advantage to win the physical battle.

But really, it's not about who wins or loses. This is all just a trial and I hope these coaches treat is as such instead of running with a low-risk gameplan. I hear this has been creeping into the game and it's really hurting the careers of certain players.

Might do a run down of the Queensland side a little later.

England Academy squad named for Australian tour
Tuesday 19th June 12
The England Academy have named a 24-man squad for their summer tour of Australia, which will see the next generation of England stars take on New South Wales Under-18s and Parramatta Juniors before facing the Australian schoolboys in a two-Test series.
The Academy depart for Australia on July 19 and the 24-man squad features a host of players with Super League experience, including Bradford Bulls forward John Bateman who will captain the tourists.
The squad comprises six players from Wigan Warriors, five Leeds Rhinos, three players each from Bradford Bulls, St Helens and Warrington Wolves with two Huddersfield Giants and sole representatives from both Hull FC and Salford City Reds.
The side travel Down Under hoping to emulate the feats of the 2004 England Academy squad who, captained by James Graham, were the last England Academy team to defeat the Aussies on home territory.
Academy coach Dave Elliott is confident his squad can repeat that success.
“It has been very tough choosing the final 24 man squad,” said Elliott. “We’ve got a lot of talented players at this age group and there are a lot of disappointed players who have missed out on selection.
“For those that have made it into the squad, being able to represent your country on a tour in Australia is a fantastic honour. It’s a great opportunity and one that many players will never experience - so this is a special opportunity for this group.
“We are going there hoping to emulate the success of 2004 and win the series, so the pressure is on us to perform. The players have all said that they want to win - they’re all very determined to do the shirt proud.
“We are under no illusions as to how tough the challenge will be but we have some very exciting and talented young players in this squad and I’m confident that they’ll be able to deliver the results that we want.”
England Academy 24-man touring squad (professional and community clubs):
Ben Currie (Warrington Wolves, Parkside Golbourn)
Connor Farrell (Wigan Warriors, Wigan St Pats)
Dominic Speakman (St Helens, Halton Hornets)
Gavin Bennion (Warrington Wolves, Ryland Sharks)
George Williams (Wigan Warriors, Ince Rose Bridge)
James Cunningham (Hull FC, East Hull)
James Duckworth (Leeds Rhinos, Whinmoor Warriros)
James Saltonstall (Warrington Wolves, Siddal)
Joe Burgess (Wigan Warriors, Ince Rose Bridge)
John Bateman (Bradford Bulls, Dudley Hill)
John Ford (Salford City Reds, Blackbrook Royals)
Jordan Baldwinson (Leeds Rhinos, Hunslet Warriors)
Josh Johnson (Huddersfield Giants, Saddleworth)
Lewis Tierney (Wigan Warriors, Wigan St Pats)
Liam McAvoy (Bradford Bulls, Broughton Red Rose)
Liam Sutcliffe (Leeds Rhinos, Hunslet Warriors)
Luke Briscoe (Leeds Rhinos, Featherstone Lions)
Luke Thompson (St Helens, Pilkington Recs)
Mark Percival (St Helens, Halton Hornets)
Oliver Roberts (Bradford Bulls, Siddal)
Peter Aspinall (Huddersfield Giants, Huddersfield YMCA)
Ryan Hampshire (Wigan Warriors, Normanton Knights)
Ryan Sutton (Wigan Warriors, Wigan St Pats)
Steve Ward (Leeds Rhinos, Hunslet Warriors)

Bateman (second rower) is the captain and real danger man, a good super league player already. Stevie Ward (half) and Luke Briscoe (brother of Tom; can play across the backline) are also to be watched.

Absolutely would be a shame, outside of those core guys there's not a lot to shout about. Surely they'd only keep him if he was to play SL during that time of figure regularly towards the end of season.

NSW U16 side set to overcome Melbourne hoodoo
NSWRL MEDIA
22/05/2012 10:00:21 PM
The New South Wales Rugby League Under 16 representative side will be out to make it three victories in a row when they take to Etihad Stadium this Wednesday night.

Having won last year’s encounter at Suncorp Stadium by the score of 18-16, and having also won in 2010 at ANZ Stadium 24-14, Coach David Howlett knows all too well the expectations that come along with his appointment.

“It’s going to be a tough down here and obviously it sounds as if they (QLD) will have the crowd behind them but to have this challenge in front of us after having won the last couple of years will be a good test for the boys,” Howlett said.

“As a group we have come together really well in a short period of time which is always key in these types of camps and I have the utmost faith that this young group of men will stand up when it counts on Wednesday night.”

When asked to single out a few players that have impressed in camp or players to watch on Wednesday night, Howlett was reluctant to name just one.

“I think the best thing about this squad is that every player is here on their merits and we don’t need to rely heavily on any one player.

“With that said, we certainly have players in form, for example six of the squad is from the recent Harold Matthews Grand Final sides so we won’t lack for players with recent big game experience.”

NSWRL High Performance Manager, Wayne Portlock is also helping out in camp and echoed Coach Howlett’s sentiments in regards to the player’s readiness for what will be the biggest game of their blossoming careers.

“The feeling in the camp has been wonderful and every player to a man looks set to make their state proud on Wednesday night,” Portlock said.

“All of these players have earned their respective places in the team and I have no doubt that this side has the chance to emulate winning sides of the past.”

Portlock also went on to point out that of the last 10 curtain raisers played in the junior age groups between 2007 and 2011, NSW have been victorious in nine of those 10 matches, with the sole loss coming here in Melbourne three years ago.

“The only blemish on the report card so to speak was a 30-10 loss for our Under 16 side the last time we played at Etihad Stadium back in 2009, and we will certainly be looking to right that wrong so to speak on Wednesday night.”

Portlock was also quick to point out that of the 17 players who will pull on the sky blue in Game One of the Harvey Norman State of Origin series on Wednesday night, 12 of those guys have come through either the NSWRL representative sides at a junior level or have represented NSW playing for the Junior Kangaroos at some point.

“That number just goes to show that our pathways are on the right track and that there is a well trodden trail there for this group of kids to follow.

“Guys like Hayne, Carney and Pearce have all played for NSW at this type of level.

“And given the abundance of talent in this playing group and it would not surprise me if a comparable number of these players were to go on to similar representative glory at some stage in the future.”

For those of you not able to make it to Etihad Stadium this Wednesday night, we will be tweeting all of the scores as they happen on the @NSWRL twitter account.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 6.10pm.

Here is the team list for the NSWRL Under 16 side:

QUEENSLAND Under 16 halfback Cooper Bambling says his team is well prepared to handle whatever the young Blues throw at them in Wednesday night’s representative match in Melbourne.

The Queenslanders rounded out their preparations with a strong session in chilly conditions today, before heading to Etihad Stadium to watch Mal Meninga’s Maroons team have their final run.

“Today’s training session has probably been one of the better ones we’ve had, hardly any dropped balls and we just did everything according to plan,” Bambling told QRL TV.

The talented playmaker said coaches Anthony Seibold and Adrian Vowles had instilled a great deal of passion and confidence in the players.

“They’ve been really good during this camp, they’ve taught us a lot and hopefully we can take it out on the park tomorrow.

Bambling is one of four players from the Central Queensland Capras in the Queensland line-up.

The others are winger Sheldon Bobbert, centre Sam Smith and lock Kieran Duffin.

Young Blues Win Under 16 Clash
QRL Media
23/05/2012 9:30:49 PM

NEW South Wales has beaten Queensland 30-16 in tonight’s Under 16 representative match at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium.

In an entertaining but at times scrappy match, New Souths scored three tries to two on their way to a 16-12 half-time lead.

But Queensland’s hopes were ignited just two minutes into the second half when Gladstone product Sam Smith found open space and bamboozled the Blues defence to score a stunning try that levelled proceedings at 16-16.

Queensland went close to grabbing the lead, but mistakes proved costly as the young Blues began to gain the upper hand.

They went in front 20-16 when winger David Sheridan slid over in the corner for a try that was met with stern protests from the Queensland players who questioned the grounding.

NSW centre Robert Jennings then broke Queensland hearts when he skipped out of a tackle and sprinted clear to score.

There was no way back for the Maroons, but Queensland coach Anthony Seibold held high praise for his charges.

Halfback Cooper Bambling and centre Simione Fatafehi showed their class, particularly in the first half when the exciting duo crossed for superb tries.

NEW SOUTH WALES 30 (Dillon Khoury, Travis Edwards, Tevita Pangai, David Sheridan, Robert Jennings, Alex Twal tries; Jackson Hastings 3) def QUEENSLAND 16 (Cooper Bambling, Simione Fatafehi, Sam Smith tries; Sheldon Bobbert 2 )

Have a question to do with this - I see that QRL 16s and 18s sides have been named above. I also see that a Queensland Maroons U16 and U18s side will play NSW Country on July 7. What's the difference? Are the ones still to play the schoolboy outfits or what?

To partially answer my own question - looks like a 'B' team of sorts? Interesting only one Stinger, 2 Dolphins and one Pride, thought the seasons those teams had might earn them some more players in the side, if they're not all in the main side.

MAROONS UNDER 18s
1. David McKenna (Wynnum Manly Seagulls)
2. Val Holmes (Townsville Stingers)
3. Jackson Schaffer (Central United)
4. Cameron Booth (Souths Logan Magpies)
5. Jackson Luke (Gold Coast Green)
6. Kane Zalewski (Norths Devils)
7. Sam Scarlett (Wests Panthers)
8. Mitch Sharp (Gold Coast Gold)
9. Mackenzie Reid (Redcliffe Dolphins)
10. Daniel Augestine (Norths Devils)
11. Tasi Tasi (Ipswich)
12. Brett Greinke (Norths Devils)
13. Joe Boyce (Sunshine Coast)
14. Jacob Harney (Wynnum Manly Seagulls)
15. Tyson Cleal (Redcliffe Dolphins)
16. Brendan McBryde (Easts Tigers)
17. PJ Webb (Northern Pride)

From Pride facebook:

Congratulations to Pride Academy U16s player Gideon Mosby-Gela who scored a hat-trick of tries in Queensland Maroons U16s' 46-16 win over Country NSW U16s in Toowoomba at the weekend. Also, well done to all the other Pride Academy boys who played for the Queensland U16s and U18s sides! Here's the preview story from last Saturday's Cairns Post with details of who was selected from our thriving Academy system:
