Cowboys now right in contention for the spoon. I'm trying to think of a similarly high profile player to Thurston who has finished his career with the spoon. Can't think of any. Steve Carter in 2001 is one and he was a tremendous player but not a Thurston. Craig Fitzgibbon (2009) likewise. Preston Campbell (2011) is another. All below Thurston's standing in the game though.

In Penrith’s defence not many teams would’ve been able to focus on their footy in a year like that. Ben Alexander’s death destroyed morale and the club, Brandy lost his way, Fittler stood down for a while.
