Bangers build competitive total
Bangladesh has performed above expectations on the opening day of the second Test against Australia in Cairns.

The visitors are 8 for 289 at stumps, with Tapash Baisya not out 21 and Mashrafe Mortaza on 7.

Opener Hannan Sarkar top-scored for Bangladesh with 76.

Leg-spinner Stuart Magill did the damage with the ball, taking 5 for77 on a pitch expected to aid the fast bowlers.

Australian captain Steve Waugh won the toss and sent the tourists in to bat.

But Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie's opening spell failed to produce a wicket and Waugh turned to MacGill before handing the ball to Lee.

Lee made the breakthrough - opener Javed Omar (26) edging the ball to wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist.

But the Bangladeshis fought on and cruised to 1 for 55 before a mini collapse after lunch.

The visitors lost four wickets for just 14 runs.

MacGill had danger man Hannan Sarkar lbw for 76 in the 46th over after removing Habibul Bashar for 46 in the 44th with a diving catch off a tossed-up delivery.

In between MacGill's overs, Jason Gillespie had Mohammad Ashraful out for a duck after the batsman edged a short leg side delivery to the waiting hands of Gilchrist.

A swinging MacGill delivery then accounted for Alok Kapali in the 50th over, the batsman caught by Martin Love on 5 to leave Bangladesh on 5 for 170.

But Sonwar Hossain and Khaled Mashud rallied to move the score to 5 for 200 at tea.

MacGill went close to snatching a hat-trick in the final session after dismissing Hossain for 46 and then trapping Khaled Mahmud for a duck with his next ball.

His next delivery hit Taipash Baisya on the pad but umpire Rudi Koertzen turned down a loud appeal from MacGill and his team-mates.

At 7 for 230, it looked as though the Australians would get a bat before the end of the day's play.

But to their credit, the Bangladeshis fought back once again.

Taipash and Mashud (44) combined to put on 49 before Mashud edged a ball to Love at slip off the bowling of Gillespie.

bowled them out for 295, and the aussies are about 3/330 or somethin. Lehmann is on 120 odd not out, and steve waugh's around 70 odd not out. Now we're starting to show our dominance, but full credit to the bangladesh mob, theyre still in this one.

And the poor buggers were forced to watch... they can't even afford a tent between them.

Has the NZ Cricket mob decided to put the Bangers up for a tour or is only the Aussies who are willing to give them a go?
