Squads

In-form Canberra Raiders winger Jordan Rapana heads five uncapped players named in new Kiwis coach David Kidwell's 24-strong squad on Tuesday.
Rapana, who scored 23 tries for the Raiders this season, is joined by teammate Joseph Tapine, Warriors pair David Fusitu'a and Solomone Kata, and young Penrith Panthers playmaker Te Maire Martin.

Kidwell has retained Melbourne Storm prop Jesse Bromwich as his captain, continuing the role he filled against Australia at Newcastle in May.

Long-serving skipper Simon Mannering is also in the group.

Bromwich, 27, led from the front as his Melbourne outfit fell inches short of a premiership victory in 2016, making 27 appearances and running almost four kilometres with the ball.

Choosing to keep Bromwich as captain after leading the Test side in May's Anzac Day clash with Australia, new Kiwis boss David Kidwell said Mannering would remain an important cog in his side for the Test in Perth on October 15 and the following Four Nations tournament.

"He (Mannering) was really happy to keep Jesse as captain and that just shows you the person he is," Kidwell told reporters on Tuesday.

"At this stage of his career, I think Simon is just as happy not having the weight of captaincy on him."

Bromwich, capped 18 times, had impressed Kidwell with his leadership skills and modesty in the Anzac Test in Newcastle, which the Kiwis lost 16-0.

"The way he is around the group - very humble. He's another great leader and down at the Storm they think very highly of him," Kidwell said.

"Ultimately, they will both be part of a strong leadership group that set a strong culture for this team."

The Kiwis play Australia on October 15 in Perth before they seek to defend their Four Nations title in the United Kingdom.
Kidwell said all five newcomers to Test rugby league had shown impressive form during the NRL season.

"But we're always looking one step ahead, whether that's to next year's World Cup or beyond, and we also think all these players can play a big part in keeping the Kiwis on top for many years to come.

"In picking this team, we've tried to achieve a balance between players who are proven at Test level and those that are the future of the Kiwis programme"

Those unavailable selection include Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, Peta Hiku, Dean Whare, Kieran Foran, Ben Matulino, Alex Glenn and Kodi Nikorima.

Kiwis: Gerard Beale, Adam Blair, Jesse Bromwich, Lewis Brown, Greg Eastwood, David Fusitu'a, Tohu Harris, Shaun Johnson, Jordan Kahu, Solomone Kata, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Thomas Leuluai, Issac Luke, Simon Mannering, Te Maire Martin, Manu Ma'u, Jason Nightingale, Kevin Proctor, Jordan Rapana, Joseph Tapine, Jason Taumalolo, Martin Taupau, Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak.

Wales international Tyson Frizell has been included in Australia's squad for the Four Nations.

The St George Illawarra second row has made five appearances for Wales and featured in the 2011 Four Nations and 2013 World Cup.

Born in Wollongong, Australia, the 24-year-old qualifies to play for Wales through his Swansea-born father.

Frizell can continue to represent Wales as they are a tier two nation and Australia are tier one.

Players for tier two nations - teams ranked fourth to 10th in the world - can also compete, where eligible, for one of the big three nations, Australia, England and New Zealand.

Frizell was left out of the Wales squad for the 2017 World Cup qualifiers with Serbia and Italy in October, after telling coaching staff he was unavailable for selection.
He is one of seven new names in the Kangaroos squad, who face Scotland in their opening game at Hull KR's Lightstream Stadium on 28 October.

Australia squad: Cameron Smith (captain), Darius Boyd, Shannon Boyd, Boyd Cordner, Cooper Cronk, Josh Dugan, Blake Ferguson, Jake Friend, Tyson Frizell, Matt Gillett, Valentine Holmes, Greg Inglis, David Klemmer, James Maloney, Josh Mansour, Trent Merrin, Michael Morgan, Matt Moylan, Justin O'Neill, Josh Papalii, Matt Scott, Sam Thaiday, Johnathan Thurston, Aaron Woods

Will add England and Scotland squads as they are named.

I forgot about this, so the season has a little life left before 3 months of speculation and wondering if we recruited anyone before the 9's kick off

Yeah it should be a good 4 nations this year.

With the recruitment...there doesnt look to be any good players on the market from what I saw earlier.

Maybe they should look a bit further afield, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Queensland Cup, USA League etc, I doubt they'll find any FG ready players but maybe some handy guys for the NSW cup side that may grow into a FG player.

Injured. The pussy foot 1 million dollar (Or near enough) man managed to get himself injured once again. Perfect timing for missing out on a good old bash from his NRL brothers

No Hardacker in there too. Not that he had a standout NRL season but he did win their ESL man of steel award. Him and Tompkins are either injured or Bennett doesnt think theyre as good as these guys. Bennett having trouble with the English league fans by the way, might be to do with the non selection of the two mentioned, just speculating. Anyway, these guys must be good if Bennett says so and to get the nod ahead of Tompkins, if thats the case.

Wigan winger Lewis Tierney has been named in the Scotland squad for the first time ahead of the Ladbrokes Four Nations tournament, one of ten uncapped players in the 24-man squad. Tierney helped Wigan beat Warrington in last Saturday night’s Super League’s Grand Final, where he was up against future Scotland team-mate Matty Russell on the wing for Warrington. Tierney and Russell will also vie with Australian-born star Lachlan Coote, who won the World Club Championship with North Queensland Cowboys earlier this year, for the full-back role. Coote can play anywhere along the backline and also at stand-off, a position he may feature in given the absence of Peter Wallace through an elbow injury.

Coote and Tierney, son of dual-code rugby superstar Jason Robinson, are among a group of uncapped new recruits to Scotland’s cause by head coach Steve McCormack. Newcomer Ryan Brierley could reunite with Huddersfield Giants’ club-mate Danny Brough in the halves, while Super League veteran Frankie Mariano, born in Hull with roots in Cape Verde and Scotland, makes the squad having missed two previous tournaments through injury.

With only 17 capped players playing full-time professional rugby league this year, McCormack had to spread his net. In come a group of youngsters just establishing themselves in the game. From Australia come emerging St George-Illawarra star Euan Aitkien (21), alongside Tyler Cassel (21) and Sheldon Powe-Hobbs (24) who are both yet to make their NRL debuts. In England, Tierney (22 next week) has won the Super League title in his first full season, while Widnes forward Sam Brooks (23), who was capped last season, and Hull KR prop Kieran Moran made his their Super League debuts this season.

Scotland are missing three senior figures through injury. Penrith Panthers star Wallace misses out having seriously damaged his elbow during the NRL finals requiring a six-week recovery period. Joe Wardle injured his knee playing for Huddersfield in the Qualifiers and Leeds pro, Keith Galloway ruptured his Achilles in their final game of the season.

The injury to Wardle means only eight of the squad who won the 2014 European Cup to gain qualification at the Four Nations have made the cut, although 12 of the squad who reached the World Cup quarter-finals in 2013 remain, including the Phillips brothers from Workington Town. They are among nine players who spent 2016 in the Championship while six were with Super League clubs. Nine of the squad played in last year’s European Cup.

After a week at Heriot-Watt’s brand new state of the art Oriam Performance Centre, Scotland travel down to Cumbria on Friday 21 October to play a warm-up game against a Cumbrian Select XIII in Liam Harrison’s Testimonial at Barrow. They then move into their Preston training camp where they will be based throughout the tournament.

Alphabetical players with age/caps: Danny Addy (Bradford Bulls, 25/11), Euan Aitkin (St George Illawarra Dragons, 21/0), Ryan Brierley (Huddersfield Giants, 24/0), Sam Brooks (Widnes Vikings, 23/1), Danny Brough (Huddersfield Giants, 33/20), Tyler Cassel (Wests Tigers, 21/0), Lachlan Coote (North Queensland Cowboys, 26/0), Luke Douglas (Gold Coast Titans, 30/5), Dale Ferguson (Bradford Bulls, 28/11), Ben Hellewell (London Broncos, 24/12), Liam Hood (Leigh Centurions, 24/4), Ben Kavanagh (Bradford Bulls, 28/11), Kane Linnett (North Queensland Cowboys, 27/4), Ryan Maneely (Halifax, 22/0), Frankie Mariano (Castleford Tigers, 29/0), Billy McConnachie (Ipswich Jets, 26/0), Kieran Moran (Hull KR, 19/0), Brett Phillips (Workington Town, 27/8), Callum Phillips (Workington Town, 24/3), Sheldon Powe-Hobbs (Northern Pride, 24/0), Matthew Russell (Warrington Wolves, 23/5), Lewis Tierney (Wigan Warriors, 22/0), Dave Scott (Batley Bulldogs, 23/13), Adam Walker

I would have thought with Wigan winning their comp there would have been more of their players in the England squad

Well, there are reasons - Charnley is going to Union, S.Tomkins & O'Loughlin are injured, Smith had his shot and didn't impress (and has been outperformed hugely by Gale for the last two years), McIlorum is stuck behind a glut of great English dummy halves (Hodgson, Clark, Roby, Houghton) and there's probably only room for 1 or 2 (at a stretch) of J.Tomkins/Farrell/Bateman (Farrell & Bateman got in), given that they're all edge forwards and Whitehead is #1 in that position, with Ferres also around (and those 3 are lucky Currie is injured). Flower is Welsh and Mossop has been average since his return.

The guys I would have expected to make it did.
