Large shark spotted in inner Sydney canal

A large shark was spotted in Alexandria canal at Mascot.

A large shark was spotted marauding in an inner Sydney waterway this weekend.

The species of the fish has not been confirmed, but it's suspected to be either a juvenile great white or a big bull shark.

The man behind the camera, Simon Dilosa, posted the footage to Facebook on Saturday morning after the sighting in Alexandria canal at Mascot.

Along with 10,000 views, the footage has garnered plenty of quips from watchers, one of whom labelled the predator "one of those hipster inner west sharks".

Another took it as a "sign from god" that Cronulla will win a flag again this year, but that theory was shot down by a South Sydney fan who pointed out that the shark was in Rabbitohs territory.

Other expressed surprise that the creature had braved the foul water in the canal, though some older observers say the quality of the water has improved over the decades.

It seems the shark may have swum up from Botany Bay, about 10km away to the southeast.

According to Mr Dilosa, he farewelled the star if his film as it was "heading back towards main channel of Cooks River after sighting."

Bull sharks are known to inhabit canals and can tolerate large amounts of fresh water.

However, it is uncommon for great whites to venture further inland than river mouth.

It's not exactly uncommon is it? Sharks make it all the way up to Chipping norton lake so I wouldn't say it's a sign of anything.
