A 13-year-old boy is in a serious but stable condition after a head clash during a junior rugby league match in south western Sydney.

The under 14s Macarthur Saints player and a Cambelltown City player knocked heads at the Cambelltown game on Saturday afternoon.

The Macarthur Saints boy then collapsed after being elbowed in the face and was taken from the field.

But he was allowed back where he collapsed a few minutes later.

The boy was taken to the Children's Hospital at Westmead by helicopter at about 4pm.

"We are just hoping and praying that the outcome is good - we don't know at this stage," Macarthur Saints club secretary Dianne Morrison said.

"Our thoughts are with his family."
