ACL's and the AFL

If there is ever a sport you want to play and want to f**k up your knees AFL is the sport to choose. With the strength and power of the modern day athlete is it really surprising this sport has a crazy amount of acl injuries? Players are constantly pivoting, planting their feet in awkward positions to gain the ball, jumping for the ball and landing off balance in the AFL. The game is literally set up to be a deathtrap for your knees.

look at this list of athletes who have torn their acls this season,

Daniel Menzel:
Geelong, April 23
One of the unluckiest men in the sport when it comes to knee injuries, Menzel was playing only his second match after returning from LARS surgery on the same joint in December when he went to ground in a VFL match. It is the 21-year-old's fourth serious knee injury.

Staggering how many have gone down and it's so early in the year. Poor Menzel, must feel like he's cursed.

They just seem so innocuous too for the most part.

I reckon in part it's because the grounds are too firm.

The grounds are getting a bit too much like playing basketball or netball and netball is notorious for knees/ankles too.

In the old days the softer grounds, a bit more mud, a bit more give - but, then, you had the other dilemma when the ground dried out a tad and the mud became a knee killing death trap too.

So - can't really win.

Some people do seem more susceptible than others. The innocuous ACL's though are the troubling ones - and I just wonder if the lads do enough load baring cycling - - actual real bike riding up steep hills - that builds up strength through knees and ankles like nothing else.
