VB NSW Cup rd #22 report – Vulcans vs. Bulldogs:

By Corey Rosser at Mount Smart Stadium #2

After a confidence boosting victory last week the Auckland Vulcans were looking to further their top eight claims against the Canterbury Bulldogs, in the end they did so with a hard fought 22-12 victory....

After 12 minutes it was the Vulcans who struck first, back to back penalties marching them down field where Raymond Faitala-Mariner ran onto a beautiful ball to cross. Centre Siosiua Taukeiaho missed the extras and it was 4-0.

The next 20 minutes saw the opposing forward packs go head to head in a battle of attrition – with plenty of big hits thrown in for good measure.

With eight minutes remaining in the half the Bulldogs crossed through Moses Mbye, taking an unlikely 6-4 lead in the process.

With the halftime siren screaming in the background Auckland were granted a penalty, Taukeiaho converting from the sideline to even the ledger at 6-6 heading into the break.

Six minutes into the second stanza the Vulcans once again made the most of a glut of penalties, Tangi Ropati going to the line and producing an offload for Agnatius Paasi to cross out wide.

53 minutes into the physically draining encounter the Bulldogs failed to defuse a mid-field bomb which Atelea Nafetalai pounced on to make the score 16-6.

The Bulldogs were throwing everything they had at the home team, making the most of their possession advantage to set up camp deep inside Vulcans territory. Only a try saver from Faitala-Mariner denied Canterbury from registering further points.

With 10 minutes to go a dubious penalty decision sent the Mt Smart Stadium fans into a frenzy and eventually set the Bulldogs up with a try to Paul Carter, which was converted to make it 16-12.

Both teams threw everything they had at each other, producing some brave football in testing conditions.

In the end Auckland put the result beyond doubt with a try to interchange forward Albert Vete under the posts, Paasi converted to make it 22-12.

That’s the way it would stay, the Vulcans triumphing in a scrappy encounter.

The result pushes Auckland one step closer to a guaranteed top eight spot, while the loss further anchors Canterbury to the bottom of the table.

Halftime: 6-6

Fulltime: Vulcans 22 (Faitala-Mariner, Paasi, Nafetalai , Vete tries; Taukeiaho 1/2 Paasi 2/3 conversions. Bulldogs 12 (Mbye, Carter tries; Littlejohn 2/2.)

VB NSW Cup rd #23 preview - Auckland vs. Wyong:

By Corey Rosser

The last time these two teams met the Wyong Roos pulled off one of the upsets of the season, beating the Vulcans at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium....

That game back in May remains a bitter taste in the Vulcans mouths and the players and staff alike will no doubt be keen to return the favour at Morry Breen Oval.

Both come into the match off the back of victories last week, the Vulcans producing a professional display to beat Canterbury 22-12, while Wyong continued their climb with a classy 24-20 win over Mounties.

Auckland welcome back boom youngest Carlos Tuimavave to the fullback role, which sees Tangi Ropati shift out to the wing.

Vodafone Warriors prop Russell Packer misses the match, but the Vulcans are well accounted for in the front row with Sebastine Ikahihifo shifting into the number eight jersey.

The key players for Auckland are led by Raymond Faitala-Mariner. The Junior Warrior comes into the match following a stellar showing against the Bulldogs and his quality lines will keep Wyong guessing all day.

Another to watch is Agnatius Paasi, the powerful centre was outstanding last week and takes multiple defenders to take down, while his offload has the ability to turn a match.

Despite not being affiliated with an NRL club this season Wyong have plenty of talent in their ranks.

Winger Etu Uaisele is a powerhouse runner who has been in the NRL mix for many years, while Marvin Filipo will pose a risk for the Vulcans too.

Wyong will be pumped to register another win and further distance themselves from the last placed Bulldogs, while Auckland need another win to propel themselves into prime position come finals time.

VB NSW CUP rd #23 report - Vulcans vs. Roos:

By Andrew Stark at Morry Breen Field

The Auckland Vulcans ran out convincing 38-20 winners over Wyong in a sometimes spiteful encounter at the Morry Breen Field....

Apart from the niggle which saw three Vulcans placed on report and two late send offs, one from either team, this was a game highlighted by a sparkling period of play midway through the first half that yielded three spectacular, razzle dazzle, Auckland tries.

The afternoon’s scoring began in the 9th minute when Vulcan’s second rower Sebastine Ikahihifo sprinted 45 metres down the left touchline after nice lead up from Albert Vete and Alehana Mara. The Roos hit straight back however when nuggety five eighth Brad Bennett burrowed over from close range. Auckland then proceeded to run white hot for a breath taking quarter of an hour of absolute power and skill. Tries in the 17th, 22nd and 29th minutes to Waetford, Lolohea and Mara, each attacking raid a master class in hot potato ball movement as the Steeden simply refused to be locked down.

In warm conditions, starved of possession and trailing 22-6, Wyong looked out on their feet after half an hour yet mercifully the bright Vulcan light began to slowly dull a little as penalties and ill-discipline crept in.

A burst of Roos possession enabled firstly Jono Ford to slice over off Mitch Williams, followed six seconds before halftime by Jayson Mackenzie spearing into the Leagues Club corner to reduce the mid game deficit to 22-14.

The second period couldn’t have started much worse for Wyong. Jono Ford sent the kick off over the side line on the full and the ensuing Auckland attacking raid ended with big Nathaniel Peteru tearing up the middle, bashing and barging his way over through a host of despairing green and gold jerseys.

At 28-14 the game entered an arm wrestle phase. Wyong attacked strongly but were denied by resolute defence and then against the run of play, Pita Godinet dashed away for a four pointer after a dubious Vete offload. This was followed by Albert Vete driving in low for a try of his own and with seven minutes remaining.

The simmering pot then lost its lid. Firstly, Wyong’s Junior Tia Kilifi was sent off for a high tackle. And then from the restart an almighty brouhaha spiraled across field, the culmination of which saw Vulcan’s prop Charlie Grubb marched for punching.

Twelve on twelve for the final 3 minutes, a period in which Dan Phillips was able to sprint over for a consolation try leaving the final ledger reading 38-20 in Auckland’s favour.

Auckland Vulcans (Ikahihifo, Waetford, Lolohea, Mara, Peteru, Godinet, Vete tries: Taukeiaho (5 goals)

Wyong Roos (Bennett, Ford, MacKenzie, Phillips tries: Ford (2 goals)

Half Time: 22 – 14

Full Time: 38 – 20 (Auckland Vulcans)

VB NSW Cup rd #24 preview - Vulcans vs. Magpies:

By Corey Rosser

These two teams won’t have to strain their memories too hard to recall their last meeting, and for one team the mental wounds will still be raw....

Only three weeks ago the Vulcans beat the Magpies 44-10 at Mount Smart Stadium, and needless to say Wentworthville will have revenge on their minds when they met again this Sunday.

That game kick started a three match winning streak for Auckland, who recently claimed a valuable away win against Wyong.

The Vulcans appear to well and truly have their mojo back and are once again challenging for a top six spot as the competition races towards the finals.

Last week’s win came at a cost however, with in form forward Sebastine Ikahihifo joining hooker Alehana Mara as causalities from the match.

As a result both will miss this fixture in what is sure to be a blow to the Vulcans.

It’s not all bad news however - they keep Charlie Gubb who avoided suspension following a visit to the judiciary this week, while powerful front rower Daniel Palavi returns to the frame also.

With Mara out young hooker Siliva Havili becomes a key man for this match up, and his ability to control the ruck will go a long way to deciding the fixture.

The Vulcans strength in this clash sits in their back line, which in the clash a few weeks ago proved too big, too strong and too fast for the Magpies to defend.

The likes of centre Siosiua Taukeiaho will keep them on guard for the full 80 and have the potential to once again ensure this match ends with the Vulcans taking away the two points.

One man who consistently challenged Auckland in the last match was Manu Mau, a former Vulcan himself, his ability to run a quality line created plenty of issues. The fact that he will miss this match means much of that responsibility will fall on Kiwi boy Kenny Edwards.

With many of their star players, such as Jake Mullaney, currently required by the Parramatta Eels, Wenty are a depleted outfit. Yet they still have plenty of talent and ability and are a real shot in this match, particularly back on home turf.

The game is crucial for the Magpies who currently sit in ninth spot, tied with Mounties for eighth. If they hope to be a part of finals footy then they will need to win the majority of their remaining fixtures.

Auckland on the other hand won’t want to halt their momentum as they run into some rich form at the right end of the season.

yea, wonder if it was 'contrived' ?

North Sydney are a good team, but the way the Vulcans have been playing recently, you gotta wonder if there was a little jockeying for position yesterday.

hope they go well..

VB NSW Cup finals week 1 preview – Vulcans vs Tigers:

By Corey Rosser

After 26 weeks of grueling football its win at all costs for these two sides, as they fight to keep their premiership dream alive for 2013....

In two meetings earlier this year the Vulcans and Tigers have a win each, both claiming the two points on home turf after thrilling encounters.

The question on everyone’s mind this week had been whether or not the Vulcans’ NRL stars would return to the side following the Vodafone Warriors failure to make the finals. The answer saw Auckland fans rejoicing mid-week when the team was announced.

Cult figure Suaia Matagi, rookie sensation Ngani Laumape and talented centre Siosiua Taukeiaho all come back into the side, which will be a huge boost to coach Willie Swann’s hopes of progressing.

After a year in which player turnover has been heavy, the Vulcans have key men returning as the most important game of the season looms.

The other big inclusion for them is John Palavi.

The Tigers have had an at times equally stop-start type of season, but come into this one with the talent to do some damage.

Fullback and captain Sean Meaney has plenty of first grade experience and is a steady influence at the back. His battle with opposite number Tangi Ropati is sure to be a blinder.

Much like their opponents, the Tigers’ back row is their real strength, containing the ultra-consistent Jarrod Farlow and talented former Toyota Cup star Shaun Spence.

Don’t underestimate the halves either, Jack Madden has plenty of ability, while standoff Eddie Paea is a former World Cup representative for Tonga.

These teams have a lot in common and know each other well.

The time for excuses is well and truly over and the equation is simple – win or get ready for a somber mad Monday and start dreaming about 2014.

I wnet along and watched this semi, to be honest it seemed there was the same attitude in the vulcans that plagued the warriors last week in wollongong. heaps of errors no real must win attitude was very dissapointing. Matagi was head and shoulders the best, 2 barge over trys from close range, sum great momentum shifting hitups and some solid shots on defence. I believe tjis will be the last time the vulcans get to see him as he will be in first grade every week next season. Gubb was also good, great offloads at crucial times and good defence. Also he must be close to being in the top grade. Nearly a good punch up at the end Gubb got into it with a tigers forward and kept yelling at him to run it at him, next set the tigers player ran it and passed it straight away hahahaha dropped his nuts big time. Pretty dissapointing end to the season really and expected more from them, also where was mara, ropati, sam lousi, packer and all the other elidgible players

Mara is injured, I believe Sam Lousi is too, as is Russell Packer. Given J'Ro didn't play last week, I dare say he was too.

Rohan Smith to coach Vulcans in 2014:

Vastly-experienced coach Rohan Smith has been announced as the new coach of the Auckland Vulcans for 2014.

The 32-year-old Smith, previously on the Vodafone Warriors’ football staff from 2001-2004, is returning in the newly-appointed role of fulltime coach of the club’s New South Wales Cup feeder team....

Smith takes over from Willie Swann, who coached the Vulcans in a part-time capacity this year, taking them to the NSW Cup finals; they finished sixth in the regular season after missing the play-offs last year.

Vodafone Warriors general manager football operations Dean Bell said he had huge admiration for Swann who combined his fulltime role as a dean at Liston College and coaching the Vulcans.

Smith, whose father is highly-experienced top-level coach Brian Smith, has been associated with rugby league clubs in New Zealand, Australia and England since 2001 including a stint as video analyst and junior elite coach with the Vodafone Warriors in 2003-2004. He also worked for the Kiwis when Daniel Anderson was coach.

“Rohan has impressive experience and is highly regarded for his professionalism,” said Bell.

“This newly-created fulltime role is part of the plan to make sure that all coaching departments are integrated and following the club wide approach to developing our players to the highest possible standard in readiness for NRL football.

“Rohan will also be involved in other newly created development initiatives that (Vodafone Warriors head coach) Matt (Elliott) has recently introduced.”

Previously Smith has been an NRL assistant coach with the Sydney Roosters and the Newcastle Knights as well as being assistant coach with the London Broncos in the English Super League. He has also coached Tonga and was Newcastle’s NYC head coach in 2009-2010.
