VB NSW Cup rd #14 report - Auckland Vulcans vs. Windsor Wolves:

By Stewart Moses

The Vulcans combined brute strength with an impressive ability to control possession for significant periods of the game to run out 20-14 winners over a gall...ant Windsor Wolves on a cool winter’s evening at Windsor Sporting Complex.

Windsor promoted Holden Cup fullback Kieran Moss to replace Matt Moylan, while Jeremy Latimore made a welcome return from injury to start in the front row for the Wolf Pack.

The Vulcans fully capitalised on a penalty conceded by Eto Nabuli when a shift to the left resulted in winger Tangi Ropati scoring in the corner from close range in the 15 minute to lead 4-0.

The Vulcans began to flex their muscle thereafter & attacked with Sam Lousi down Windsor’s left edge at every opportunity & it was only a Moss intercept close to his try line that prevented the giant back rower from setting up their second try.

The Wolves were dealt a double blow on a half hour mark when first Nathan Smith then Kyle O’Donnell who only came on the field minutes earlier, were forced from the field with leg injuries.

Despite the setbacks, the Wolves finished the first half the stronger, earning repeat sets which led to hooker Daniel Foster darting through the line from dummy half to score underneath the posts & with the conversion by Luke Capewell, gave the Wolves an unlikely 6-4 lead at halftime.

The second half could not have started any worse for the Wolf Pack when a great kick / chase effort by the Vulcans led to Moss making an error on the kick retrieval, close to his try line.

From the ensuing scrum, experienced centre Jerome Ropati provided a great inside ball for fullback Steve Weatford to crash over out wide to regain the lead 8-6 after 43 minutes.

The Vulcans dominated possession over the next 10 minutes with a plethora of repeat sets, and that wave of possession eventually told in the 48th minute when interchange prop Nathaniel Peteru stormed over under the posts from close range & with the Godinet conversion, suddenly led 14-6.

Vulcans prop Suaia Matagi was put on report in the 56th minute and upon resumption of play, a Luke Capewell line-break saw Bryce Cartwright backing up to score to the left of the posts but Cartwright missed the relatively easy conversion to leave the Wolf Pack trailing 14-10.

The Wolves scored back to back tries when Geoff Daniela capitalised on a rare Windsor penalty to score out wide to level the match 14-14 in the 61st minute.

Daniel Foster & debutant Toby Evans were placed on report in the 65th minute and from the ensuing penalty the Vulcans created the overlap down Windsor’s left side only for the pass from Lousi to go astray with the try line wide open.

The game turned on its head in the 70th minute when a penalty was awarded against the Wolves 10m out right in front, from which Godinet kicked the goal to put the Vulcans back in front once more.

The Vulcans gained ascendancy from this point & their ability to build pressure through repeat sets was telling in the end as five eighth Carlos Tuimavave scores from close range to seal the game 20-14.

Gubb back as Auckland look for five in a row:

Impressive front rower Charlie Gubb returns to the Vulcans this week in an otherwise settled looking squad to face the Wests Tigers.

After spending last weekend as the 18th man for the Vodafon...e Warriors, Gubb returns to the Auckland squad who last week registered a big away win over the fourth placed Windsor Wolves.

Usually a back rower, Sebastine Ikahihifo pushes up into the front row this week which sees regular big boppers Suaia Matagi and Daniel Palavi move to lock forward and the interchange bench respectively.

Mataupu Poching returns into the Vulcans frame for the first time this season as 18th man.

VB NSW Cup rd #15 preview - Auckland Vulcans vs. Wests Tigers:

By Corey Rosser

One point separates the sixth placed Auckland Vulcans and seventh placed Wests Tigers ahead of their clash this weekend, if the action is half that close on the field it promises to be an enthralling affair.
...
The game will be broadcast live throughout New Zealand and Australia on Sky Sport 2 and Fox Sports 1 respectively.

Auckland head into the match in red-hot form, following their fourth straight win last weekend over the Windsor Wolves.

But with just two wins away from home this year they will approach this fixture with caution, despite having plenty of reason to be confident.

Coach Willie Swann would have been pleased with a much improved defensive effort last week, but that will have to step up to another level to counter a Tigers squad that contains strike weapons such as Sean Meaney, Eddie Paea and last week’s four try hero Taqele Naiyaravoro.

The Vulcans will have scanned over plenty of video on Naiyaravoro this week and his presence is sure to keep the Ropati’s, Tangi and Jerome busy in defence.

The home team will also turn up on a high following a convincing romp of the Canterbury Bulldogs a week ago.

Under the guidance of young halfback Jack Madden Wests looked slick and well drilled, but questions remain if they can match the Vulcans physically.

The battle of the two number 16’s has to be the highlight however.

The Paasi brothers Agnatius (Auckland) and Soni (Wests) are both in great form, offering their teams a real boost when they come off the interchange bench. Their personal battle promises to be entertaining, but both have the potential to influence the outcome of this match also.

Both teams have talented halves and outside backs, but this match could be settled in the middle of the ruck.

Expect a physical encounter with some entertaining tries and near-misses.

Absolutely. His pronunciation of Taukieararo, Matoki, Paleavee, Ikakakakahio are at best laughable. Interestingly he seems to have little problem with the Polynesians in Wests side.

Tacky Ah How? The one that really shits me in the NRL is Josh "Papaahlee" - is it not pronounced
"Pa Pa Le e"?
It can't be that hard to get it right - if in doubt (read: if you're not a lazy, bogan hack) ask the players themselves!

Who is this Matongi fellow? It would all be quite funny if didn't actually reveal the prevalent stupidity amongst Australian (and some NZ) commentators/journos.

Brainless act by Paasi. Send off was the right decision.

Do you think so?
I'm absolutely in favour of the shoulder-charge ban, but the Wests player's knee dropped and he basically fell into the defender's shoulder - had the attacker stayed more upright, he would've copped the shoulder in his chest and Paasi may've got an arm around the attacker's chest/back as well thus making it a tackle. I don't think Paasi meant to shoulder-charge the bloke, it was just unfortunate positioning and timing.
Mind you, I could be wrong.

Godinet you dope. You absolute dope. What on earth were you thinking? You and Paasi cost the Vulcans the game. You are an absolute thick head. Fall on the ball you dope. They're the 1%ers that cost you.

Absolutely. He didn't use his arms at all. The rules are extremely well known. In that situation it was a completely brainless act. Certainly deserved to go given the bloke has probably got a broken jaw.

Thought it was a hard tackle gone wrong, Tiger was going down before Paasi collected him.

Penalty for sure but a red card ??

1st Grade results are so far going our way this weekend.

Just need the Storm to roll the Titans and it's a clean sweep.

I thought Lowrie would have played for the Vulcans this weekend. He needs game time to sort his s*it out.
