Beginning of the End for the Salary Cap?

There's nothing wrong with a salary cap. But its not doing a good job at spreading the talent.

Maybe have 3 players at each club exempt from the salary cap. Spreading the elite players around a bit more. The cap helps do that a bit... but this might help teams like Tigers and Knights without completely screwing up their salary cap.

I also think teams who develop players should be rewarded. Some sort of discount for them in the cap... might help encourage teams to invest in development a bit more. Not so much for the elite players. But the solid squad players.

Not sure having 3 exemptions at each club would work. Most likely that would result in the elite players getting ridiculous money at the richer clubs and out of reach of the poorer clubs.

If they really want to even it out they should get rid of TPA exemptions

It was actually (do NOT ask me why) NSWRL etc that kicked up the shit amd nothing to do with the Donkeys.

DCE was never picked up from the Sunmy Coast link. He was in our system before that and was picked up from Brisbame juniour leagues. Bronco's (and every other club for that matter) said he was no good.

Because the NSWRL said that if you want to have junior reps in their comp, you need to have a feeder team in the highest NSWRL comp (NSW Cup).

Same thing happened to Canberra and Melbourne.

Maybe a development fee whereby a club that develops a player (the player makes their first grade debut or top 25 squad for first time) receives a % of the player's contract value if they leave the club.

Eg, Cowboys bring Ponga thru to FG, he signs with the Knights for 900k per season and the Knights pay a development fee of (lets say 10%) 90k to the Cowboys.

Parameters that could be put in place include, no fee applicable if the player is over 23, development fee is salary cap exempt, club receiving dev fee must use at least 50% of that money to reinvest in junior development programs.

Thoughts?

Don't Melbourne still have a feeder arrangement with Easts in Brisbane?

Yes but they used to field amelbourne based sg ball and hm side in the nsw comp. nswrl told them they had to also field areserve grade in nsw cup or the juniors weren't allowed in. Given travel distances from Melbourne to the places in qland comps they decided to base their Jnr programmes in qland thus setting rl,development in Melbourne back another decade. Nice one nswrl.

The biggest "old boys clubs" still cruelling leagues development, are the state based governing bodies.

Halfwits the lot of them.

then watch as players move on to other codes. League players are a valuable commodity with a market much larger than the east coast of Australia.

How about for every player developed through a clubs junior system 1% of their salary is excluded from the cap per year of first grade (or could set it at a game limit like 1% for every 20 games). ie a 4 year player on $300K has 12K off the cap, a 7 year player on $700K has $49K off. It is not excessive and for teams with a majority of junior developed players it would add up at 1 good level extra first grader at about $300-$500K.

It would basically combine the junior development and long service player discount. The longer a player is at the club the better the discount

We used to have feeder arrangements with sides in both states.

In NSW Cup we used North Sydney, Central Coast, had our own melbourne based side then had a joint one with Cronulla.

There was talk of bringing Albury into the NSW Cup but no idea why thay stopped.

So now we have feeder arrangements with Easts Tigers and Sunshine Coast Falcons along with our junior rep teams and NYC side being based on the Sunshine Coast.
