OK call me radical, but as a player from the 80's.... when players were so much smaller, no where near as fit or fast there seemed a lot more space on a standard footy field.
An average player being 85kg in the 80's and today they are 100kg+
There's also the interchange to consider.....to make more space make the field bigger...or lets just drop a couple of players and do 11's.
Or just make it even easier get rid of the interchange and bring back the smaller 80 minute player.

Too hard to change the size of the field with stadiums built around them.

The smart thing to do in this case is just rotate the playing field dimension.

So teams will run from sideline to sideline now, and the in goals are now the sidelines.

You know it makes sense.

It makes sense to go to 11 men because that has the added advantage of making it easier to put a local team together and also everyone gets paid more at the professional levels.

If they altered the 40/20 rule slightly making it a constant threat it would create a lot of space as well.

What if we had 11 players on the field.
And to promote more attacking, let's have specialised attacking teams for when your team has the ball, and then specialised defensive teams when you don't.
To help creativity each team is allowed a minute before each play the ball to formulate an attacking plan.
Forward passes are hard to rule on, so let's just abolish them anyway, opens the game up to more possibility.
Everytime the team moves the ball 10m the tackle count should reset. Though 6 tackles is to much for that so we'd habe to make it 4 tackle sets.
10m is to far for defences to be back, they should only have to be back a metre from the play the ball.
If a player drops a ball from a catch his team shouldn't be to heavily punished for his mistake on an enterprising play. Instead of a handover it should just be counted as a tackle. Ditto for players who try enterprising plays near the sideline and accidentally go out.
Obstruction rule is confusing and limiting, so blocking is allowed.
Tries should be worth 6 points, conversions only 1 but field goals should be worth 3
I think T-goon would love those changes

Sorry, I don't think a sport with those rules would appeal to anyone...

I see the proliferation of decoy running as a sure sign that there is not enough space on the field. If a few less players reduces the need for decoying (and therefore chaotic refereeing interpretations on obstruction)...winning.
Gang tackling is also a sign there are too many.
