Billionaire Behind 2nd NRL Franchise
Thu Oct 02, 11:08am (NZ)
Written by: NZRL
New Zealand Rugby League director Andrew Chalmers today acknowledged that a project to create a second entry into the Australian NRL competition, or the relocation of an existing Franchise to New Zealand, was gathering further momentum. “Support for the move has been overwhelming and has come from every quarter of New Zealand” Chalmers said.

NZRL Executive Chairman Selwyn Pearson originally stated the billionaire was Belgian but Chalmers has since confirmed that although he is Belgium based, he is in fact English by birth. The prospective backer and his associates have asked that their identity remain strictly confidential at this stage.

Further discussions are scheduled over the coming weeks, with the NRL, and the English backer. Chalmers expects negotiations will commence with the Westpac Trust Stadium in the next month. Preliminary discussions are also underway with potential major sponsors.

“The NZRL has identified the need and potential viability for a southern-based team as part of its strategic planning process. Having said that, it isn't the intention of the NZRL to own an NRL Franchise, just continue the drive to push the need for a second one. One could also never rule out the possibility of Eric Watson owning two Franchises. The NRL have advised that New Zealand is seen as a strategic development area for their competition. It is vital to the ongoing development and growth of our exciting sport that we lay plans now to underline and support the success of the NZ Warriors with a second team,” stated Chalmers today.

Chalmers also went on to say he was excited by the project assigned to him by
the NZRL Board.

he could be very vital in the funding of the development of the game too. he might want to help develop the game more in NZ and perhaps even more nations after that

Imagine the extra players we'd have to find to make them competitive.......now if you wanted a Premier League side from NZ then i could agree...........

What bullshit. Theres plenty of talent to support another couple of sides in the NRL. Look some of the players the Roosters have been able to stockpile, theres some worthy first graders running around for the Broncos in the Clydesdales, at times Souths premier league side resembled a first grade squad and theres plenty of talent in NZ, especially Canterbury where this side will be located as the Canterbury Bulls have been very successful in recent years.
When the NRL had the mass exodus of players going to England a few years back people were questioning what the quality was going to be like with that amount of class gone. Surprise surprise a new generation of stars emerged and people quickly forgot what was supposedly a crisis.

Yeah I believe ther's plenty of talent out there also.

Even more soon with the interest the Warriors have created lately.

Stopping the players going to the U.K is the way to easily accomodate a 16th team. You could easily make a very competetive side from the players who have left in the past couple of seasons.

Have a look at some of the premier league sides. There is more than enough to make up a decent side for the first few seasons.

i agree

there is definitely enough talent in nz, plus nz'ers in australia and gb to perhaps warrant 3 nz teams
