Five new players were named in the All Blacks rugby squad of 26 today for next month's homes test against England, Wales and France.

Among them is Canterbury and Crusaders lock and loose forward Brad Thorn, who turned down the All Blacks jersey in 2001.

The others are Crusaders five-eighth Dan Carter, Auckland utility back Mils Muliaina, Wellington centre Ma'a Nonu and Auckland winger Joe Rokocoko.

Canterbury and Crusaders captain Reuben Thorne has regained the captaincy after missing the 2002 tour of the northern hemisphere, and Wellington and Hurricanes captain Tana Umaga, a midfield back, will be his deputy.

Thorne is now likely to lead the team to the World Cup in Australia later this year.

Among those to miss selection are Taine Randell, who captained a young side on the end of the tour last year, and Crusaders No 8 Scott Robertson, voted the international player of 2002.

Other senior players of last year overlooked include Jonah Lomu, who is recovering from illness, Andrew Mehrtens and Norm Maxwell, both who have been inactive recently due to injury, Simon Maling and Mark Hammett.

Blues second five-eighth Sam Tuitupou is a notable non-selection despite his magnificent Super 12 season.

"It's a pretty exciting team, I'm very excited with this group," Thorne said.

All Blacks coach John Mitchell said two more selections were to be made - for the Tri-Nations against Australia and South Africa and the World Cup.

Despite wide speculation that Wellington and the Hurricanes would have just one player in the side - Umaga - Mitchell didn't ignore the exciting Nonu, in his first year of top representative rugby like Carter, and loose forwards Rodney So'oialo and Jerry Collins.

Mitchell said the team's focus was purely on the series against England, Wales and France.

"This particular time of year is certainly a building block time. The selection process will be ongoing as there will be a wide group involved in our preparation," he said.

"This is a very exciting mix. There's enormous positional coverage within this team mix."

He said while players had been selected on form, experience was also a factor.

"Carl Hoeft's return is because he's made shifts in two skill areas that we've communicated with him in the past and I thought he had an excellent Super 12."

Commenting on the new All Black selections, Mitchell said Muliaina was unique in covering three positions.

"He covers fullback extremely well, as he does at outside centre. He also can play in the wing position.

"Joe Rokocoko to me is an exciting talent. Physically he's the fastest person in New Zealand and physically he punches and plays above his weight.

"Ma'a Nonu, he's just a wonderful attacking threat and Daniel Carter is unique in the fact he can play second five-eighth, first five-eighth and he is also a goal kicker."

On Christian Cullen's omission, Mitchell said the selectors had opted for one specialist fullback with cover from Howlett and Muliaina and he denied Cullen was paying the price for being a specialist fullback.

"No, we as selectors have decided that Leon is the No 1 fullback after Super 12. Cully will be in the wider group, allowing us to bring players into fitness testing because we still have a number of fitness tests to go throughout the season and we also bring players from time to time into camps and build towards World Cup preparation."

But Mitchell was concerned about MacDonald's series of concussions and head injuries, including a bad blow to his face in the Super 12 final on Saturday.

"Like all players who have head knocks he'll still have to go through an impact test during this week and obviously it's absolutely vital for Leon understanding his history in that area."

Asked about the bar incident involving Muliaina over the weekend, Mitchell said the Blues' management was handling the incident.

"When you become an All Black there are responsibilities that come with being an All Black and Mils, like every other All Black, will have to adjust to All Black life very quickly."

The team is: Daniel Carter (Canterbury), Jerry Collins (Wellington), Steve Devine (Auckland), David Hewett (Canterbury), Carl Hoeft (Otago), Marty Holah (Waikato), Doug Howlett (Auckland), Chris Jack (Canterbury), Leon MacDonald (Canterbury), Justin Marshall (Canterbury), Aaron Mauger (Canterbury), Richie McCaw (Canterbury), Kevin Mealamu (Auckland), Mils Muliaina (Auckland), Kees Meeuws (Auckland), Ma'a Nonu (Wellington), Anton Oliver (Otago), Caleb Ralph (Canterbury), Joe Rokocoko (Auckland), Greg Somerville (Canterbury), Rodney So'oialo (Wellington), Carlos Spencer (Auckland), Brad Thorn (Canterbury), Reuben Thorne (Canterbury, captain), Tana Umaga (Wellington) vice-captain), Ali Williams (Auckland).

Good to see Mitchell and co haven't gone for the 'norm' excuse the pun :)

Glad Merts and Cullen aren't there. At least they are picking players on form.
I would've had Hammet in ahead of Anton (I can't throw straight) Oliver.

If these coaches can get the players picked to gel, we'd be away laughing, the talent's certainly there.

I agree Oliver can't throw straight. I've taped test matches in the last 2 years where he was terrible in lineout throwing.

Ozbash, last year you were all against Brad Thorn being named to the AB's because he turned it down before. What do you think now. Doesn't he deserve it after a good S12 campaign?

yes, i am still against anyone who made themselves available, then turning the jersey down, ever getting it again. he shouldnt have been picked for that reason alone imho.

aside from my personal prejudices, thorn was probably up there with the best forwards in super 12.

watch this bloke steve,, dynamite . Ma'a Nonu

All Blacks discard Christian Cullen was yesterday named as one of six newcomers in the New Zealand Maori team to play Tonga and England.

The Wellington fullback, overlooked for the All Blacks 26-man squad, instead found himself selected for the first time for the Maori side.

A New Zealand Rugby Union spokesman said Cullen qualified for selection because his grandfather was part Maori.

Other newcomers to the Maori side are Auckland flanker Daniel Braid and halfback David Gibson, Otago wing Brad Fleming, Waikato hooker Scott Linklater and Taranaki centre Bryce Robins.

Waikato flanker and Chiefs Super 12 captain Jono Gibbes will lead the side.

As well as the inclusion of Cullen, the squad also sees the return of another player unwanted by the All Blacks coach, former New Zealand Maori captain Taine Randell.

Other notable inclusions include Troy Flavell, who missed most of the Super 12 competition because of suspension, and North Harbour flanker Matua Parkinson, who missed out on making a Super 12 side this year.

The 22-strong team will assemble in Auckland on Friday to prepare for the game against Tonga at North Harbour Stadium next Monday. They then play England in New Plymouth on June 9.

New Zealand Maori will also undertake a three-match tour of Canada in July and August. The team for Canada will be named in July.

Coach Matt Te Pou said he was looking forward to the games against Tonga and England.

"This is an exciting side with a lot of flair, which Maori teams have been noted for.

"We have a real mixture of newcomers and experienced players," he said.

Seven of the players have previously played for the All Blacks and the side also feature 12 players who played on last year's New Zealand Maori tour of Australia.

Backs: Christian Cullen (Wellington), Willie Walker (Otago), Brad Fleming (Otago), Joe Maddock (Canterbury), Rico Gear (North Harbour), Bryce Robins (Taranaki), Ryan Nicholas (Otago), Tony Brown (Otago), David Gibson (Auckland), Brendan Haami (Taranaki).

Forwards: Taine Randell (Otago), Daniel Braid (Auckland), Matua Parkinson (North Harbour), Jono Gibbes (capt, Waikato), Kristian Ormsby (Wellington), Troy Flavell (North Harbour), Paul Tito (Wellington), Carl Hayman (Otago), Deacon Manu (Waikato), Greg Feek (Canterbury), Slade McFarland (North Harbour), Scott Linklater (Waikato).

Does New Zealand ever have an 'A' team, or do the Maori kind of serve as an A team?

New Zealand does have an "A" team. We also have a divisional team made up of 2nd and 3rd Division players who are playing manu Samoa on Monday.

So is the Maori team considered "higher" than the A team. What I'm getting at is why would they put Cullen on the Maori team, because it's the second best team after the AB's, or is it because they have some games coming up that may help get Cullen back on the AB's?

Exactly The Maori had games lined up wher as NZ A did not. As well as the fact that the Maori tend to play the more "free flowing" type of game which suits Cully's style. As apposed to NZ A where the empahsis is on not making mostakes and trying to get into the All Blacks.

So are the Maori governed by the NZRU? Who would be making the decision to put Cullen in the Maori side? Is it AB selectors, with an eye to getting him ready for the AB's later in the year? Or is it a separate body of selectors?

Yes The Maori are under the NZRFU. Matt Te Pou is the coach of the side and they do have there own selectors. Te Pou would have checked out the Whakapapa (geneolgy) of any potential player with a view of having them in the Maori squad. And I am sure Mitchell would have had a word to Te Pou as well.

radio sport are having a feild day on Cullys geneology/whakapapa thing.
according to them, cullen is of german-samoan extraction.
this has bought a few maori academics explaning that the concept of whakapapa is a "feeling"thing. if Cully "feels "like a maori, he qualifies...

Gotta agree after the dismal display against the English last night Joe.

I actually thought the boys would go a lot better.

Wet weather conditions and the Poms adapted so much better.
