It is possible, and I hate to admit, but it won't happen. As you mention AFL clubs are too big (nothing else to do in Melbourne) and even here in Sydney, teams like Souths will be hard to overcome considering they now have joint billionaire owners.

Packer has said that he wants Souths to be an internationally-known brand, like Manchester United or Real Madrid etc... even if you don't follow the sport, you know who they are.
