My Gripe is Norman gets just 1 week more than Gubb's non dangerous shoulder tackle for:

• His conviction for drug possession at The Star casino
• A police warning for consorting with known criminals at the casino
• Filming incidents involving apparent drug use and sexual activity
• Distributing video of those incidents to other NRL players

Have to agree here, Norman is a very lucky boy imo. He and Gubbs suspensions though would probably add up to more than their combined IQ

The NRL are so far off on what gets a lengthy suspension and what doesn't that it isn't funny and changes to the extreme. Stuff you don't even notice during a game will get 4+ week while noticeable things will get 1 at worst, it's laughable

I'll never get past the suspension Brett Stewart received in 2009 either, that was 1 of the most disgraceful acts from Gallop that I've ever come across

Is comparing sentences for on field and off field indiscretions apples and oranges though?

The main occupation of the judiciary is on field. They aren't there as a quasi court

Yeah, sorry, the Norman comparison isn't relevant at all - whether it's right or wrong, it's a different issue

Different type of incident yes. Not relevant...why? Based on that logic you can't compare touching a ref to a suplex tackle.

Sure Norman and Gubb indiscretions are different but they are being adjudicated on and punishments meted out by the same governing body - the NRL.

If a rapist gets 5 years jail term and someone importing cocaine for distribution gets 15 years (no particular mitigating factors in either case) would you argue that because different types of crime no comparison/relevance and all is well in that justice system? (or we can't compare national justice system to NRL justice system?).

I would argue the justice system is flawed (based on my personal view that rapists and perpetrators of violence should get really tough sentences).

It might have been a bad week for Charlie Gubb, with the Warriors forward being scrubbed out for the rest of the season with a seven-week ban, but he's received encouraging news about his long-term future with the club.

The Warriors are in negotiations with Gubb to keep him beyond his current contract, which ends in 2017.

Reports out of Sydney suggest the 26-year-old is weighing up his options, with Cronulla believed to be a possible alternative if he decides to leave Auckland.

The Warriors have already taken up an option on the Mt Smart fan favourite for next season and recruitment manager Tony Iro confirmed the club were in negotiations to extend his deal for "more than one year" beyond next season.

"We've taken up the option that we had on Charlie for 2017 and looking to extend the deal," said Iro.

"We're trying to come to an agreement where we can extend him for longer.

"We're still at the negotiating table in terms of getting an extension but we're very keen on Charlie being around."

The news follows a difficult week for Gubb, who was suspended for seven matches at the NRL judiciary on Wednesday after being found guilty of a grade two shoulder charge on Manly forward Darcy Lussick during last week's golden-point loss in Perth.

The incident escaped on-field censure before being picked up by the match review committee and the Warriors were unsuccessful in their efforts to have the charge downgraded.

He will now sit out the rest of the regular season but would come into contention if the eighth-placed Warriors advance to the NRL finals series.

Gubb made his first-grade debut in 2013 and was enjoying a strong season. He made 14 of his 29 appearances this year, both in the starting side or coming off the bench to play in the front row or at lock.

"It's been a very disappointing week for him," said Iro. "He's been going well so it is a blow for him and the team with important games coming up."

So leading with the shoulder is fine when you have the ball in hand, as Penrith's Akauola showed last night when he floored Brisbane's Ofahengaue?

Can't compare that to a shoulder charge tackle mate...apples and oranges, different incidents and parallel dimensions, unrelated issues. ;)

It's not really relevant...Corey Norman got 8 weeks because that's how many weeks there are left in the season. I have no doubt it'd have been 10 if there were 10.

The worst part about Gubb's suspension is now we'll all forget how much of a plodder he is and resign him.

imo gubb is down the bottom of the pecking order for props. id even have sipley above him.

in order

Matulino
lillyman
lisone
vete
gavet
sipley
gubb

id even have Afoa ahead of him considering bunty plays prop in the lower grades. All gubb offers is grass cutting tackles and to eliminate that all u need is footwork close to the defensive line.
the other props i mentioned have footwork and an offload probably barr lillyman but he goes forward all day. i like that the warriors have a character in gubb but thats it. offers nothing

Right, so Gubb is a prop - we're going with that? Not a 13?

He's easily below all those guys you mentioned. I couldn't care less what sort of character he is when he's bringing 7m a hitup and questionable defence to the table.

He definitely makes the David Williams All-Stars - a side composed of players whose lack of major ability was superseded by some sort of cult hero status. Other members of the side being Wolfman obviously, Martin Lang, Mark Tookey and I'm sure a few others.

Martin Lang was better than that IMO - very good prop for Penrith, and did a job for Qld

Needs more Hitro Okesene, and a dash of Nathan Long

If Gubb was half the player Martin Lang was...

At least he always attracted 2 or 3 tacklers, before the days of the gang tackle

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/league...se-to-let-charlie-gubb-leave-for-better-offer

Someone's going to need to tell me who Charlie's PR man is, so I can borrow him and run for Prime Minister.

The reigning premiers, no less, wanting to throw bigger money at a plodder with a haircut, who doesn't even have that haircut anymore.

Apparently he's a cult favourite, dunno why. Apparently he works hard, which isn't reflected in his tackles per minute or his runs (which average about 7m). Apparently he's proven himself, which I've never seen. There's so many better options in front of him. Spose there's no real incentive for us to release him if he's not on big money, but I'd be staggered if we bothered past 2017 and he certainly shouldn't be in the 17 next season.

I dunno, there's plenty more learned people than me here - am I missing something?

Nope. You said it yourself. He's not on big money and he's depth. Until someone else proves themselves ready to take his spot, the reality is that we won't find someone on equally low dollars with the equivalent experience.

Any major changes to the squad are pointless just at the moment. Kearney has the coming season to assess who he does and doesn't want, and given the amount of dollars coming off contract at the end of 2017, it makes more sense to make major changes then and shape the squad the way he wants.

Gubb has reached his potential with us as far as I can see. Won't be upset to see him moved on end of next year.

Agreed

Never once seen him make the advantage line with a hit up. His freakish grass cutter round the ankle tackles are nullified by forwards with good footwork close to the line.

Time to go

Yeah, which is why I didn't say we should let him go. I have no trouble if he's depth for injuries. Issue was this season, he was a first choice bench - and at times starting - option when we had better, ie Sipley, in NSW Cup. So if he's retained for 2017, ok cool I know you need depth on limited coin and when they've played a bit of NRL, even better. And I've got no desire to let people go when they sign contracts. We're not a charity. Sign a deal, with an option in our favour, then you have to honour it.

But it absolutely bemuses me that other clubs would see him as a good option to pay more coin to. He makes 7m a carry and never bends the line. Any belief that he's a workhorse is not backed up by stats. He often hits low and allows quick play the balls, if he's not grass cutting on his own line. I think he corrected it but early season he had an insanely bad missed tackle count for the minutes he was playing. Yet the premiers want him?

I'd be staggered if we resigned him, unless he undergoes a massive upswing in ability. Having said that, we kept Sione f**king Lousi for long enough (and apparently paid him overs).

If another club is stupid enough to pick him up, his career will be down the toilet pretty swiftly.
I refuse to believe anyone is as dumb as us to persist with him this long.

I don't care if he goes, he's clogging up our middle forward pathways hurting guys who are frankly better (Sipley, Tuli). That said... his manager is a twit. He signed a contract for an agreed amount and an agreed length with conditions that both parties knew about mate, making that public play does nothing but gets you offside with the guy who handles the contracts of the only NZ club in the competition.

If he's on that little money it does nothing to help our cap (since his spot would need to be filled by another guy on or close to the minimum), so there's no benefit for us to release him. If the Sharks (or someone else) want him, offer something we want in return. I take a look at Jordan Drew... injury has been his biggest problem (and being at a club behind three top level centres), would provide quality competition for Ayshford.

All I'd want for this squad is a centre/winger (or two) for competition to the incumbents and as many quality middles as we can get (so if someone wants a middle from us presumably they aren't going to release one of their own that we would want).
