Here is a map of Ports that China has either financed or helped finance around the world, including Melbourne. While the NY Times article is about a Sri Lankan port, the map clearly shows how far and wide China is spreading its field of power. Further, this is just Chinese investment in coastal installations. China’s investments around the world also infrastructure inland with the construction of highways and railways.

It’s only really a problem if you get a repeat of what happened in Sri Lanka where the government defaulted on the loan. If governments spend within their means then it’s no biggie. The terminal I work at in Port Botany is operated by a Chinese company too.

Of course plenty of us would argue that it would be beneficial for our ports to remain publicly owned and operated, but neoliberal ideology says otherwise....

Neoliberalism also calls for less government influence in the markets. Of course we all know the Chinese government has little if any involvement in Chinese companies.

A realist would say it is China’s slow approach to becoming the worlds hegemonic power. The twentieth century was the American Century, the twenty-first century will be remembered for being the Chinese Century.

Chinese oil purchases help prop up regimes in Syria, Iran and Venezuela which are supposed to be pure condensed evil.

Chinese Chocolate consumption is going up 20% a year.

So in addition to atttempting to weakly derail this thread, you also said shit that is patently false! Congrats on a shit derail attempt and a shit argument.

If you would like to revisit that thread please do so.

Well at least they’re not giving their oil money to a regime that is run by an unholy alliance of a corrupt royal family and fundamentalist Wahhabi clerics and which sponsors the spread of hardline fundamentalist Sunni Islam worldwide. Because that would be so evil rthat no nation earth would stoop so low, surely... right?

Well just think about that every time a Republican does something stupid like put Iran in an Axis of Evil or tears up a nuclear deal and makes a pro-reformist regimes life life harder.

    2) Most of the news did not explain any of this detail. She also explains that in Iran they often play with words. For example, here they mention that women who "unknowingly" violate Islamic Norm laws will be left alone.

    3) But that means this way they can still arrest, jail, collet commitment letter and fine anyone with the excuse that they violated the rules knowingly. This was not covered in Western media. I think this is just a ridiculous game they are playing with the media.
