Souths will play Brothers in the grand final at Richardson Park tomorrow. It has been an interesting season for the Bunnies. They lost their entire team from last season when the Rugby Union decided to play in the dry season rather than the wet season. Souths then persuaded the entire University team to sign on, meaning that Uni finished with the wooden spoon in 2003. The other clubs were aggro about Souths paying players in what is essentially an amateur competition.
There wasnt much sympathy when the DRL announced after 19 rounds that Souths had played unregistered players and had 12 points deducted, relegating them from certain minor premiers to 5th place. This meant that Souths had to beat NT Institute of Sport by 61 points in the final game to make the semis.
A Souths appeal went to arbitration. A retired NSW judge ruled that 6 points be reinstated. Although NTIS managed to win the final round, NTIS missed out and Souths moved into the major semi and beat Nightcliff to take their place in the grand final.
