Do trials count for a lot ?

Our golden point stats are pretty abysmal and ultimately costs a game or 2 every year.
Maybe we should do a bit of practise on that during the trials and see who can kick field goals "under pressure".
It shouldn't matter if we are in front or behind in the trial it is about knowing exactly what we can and can't do well and who the go to man is.
Sure as hell don't want to wait until we are in a critical game at the business end of the season to find out we don't have a clue how to execute a proper strategy to set up and kick the winning FG.
All good to do at training but during the game is a different matter.

Well I'd put a higher priority on forming combinations with our backline after all our biggest problem has been the attacking and defensive skills of our backline. More tries scored by our backline and less tries conceded by our backline would great improve our chances of winning games. Surely field goal attempts can be practiced at training when firsts play reserves in friendly games.

Now that we have Hunt at 7 and Dufty at fullback, we have 3 in the side that can take a field goal. Let them prove themselves at training.

Not having a proper halfback to call the shots has killed us in this area. We’ve had to rely on Widdop over the years to guide us home and as good a player as he is, he’s hardly Mr Clutch when the game is there to be won. Can’t actually recall him ever winning a game for us in a close contest....he did kick that goal in that semi against the Dogs but we lost that game (largely because of his kick out on the full).

Remains to be seen if Hunt can be the man for us when a game is there to be won.

About that....

Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett admitted the halfback was "not comfortable" stepping up to make the clutch play.

Hunt appeared to baulk at a field goal in extra-time, leaving it to halves partner Anthony Milford to make two failed attempts.

It stood in stark contrast to the way Hunt started the game, setting up Brisbane's 14-6 first-half lead with two pinpoint kicks that led to tries.

Remarkably Hunt has never kicked a field goal in his 167-game career.

Asked if Hunt should have put his hand up for an extra-time field goal, Bennett said: "He's probably not comfortable doing that right now.

"It's not that he doesn't practise it (field goals). It comes down to probably whoever wants to put their hand up.

"Everyone is under a lot of pressure, everyone's exhausted (in extra-time). No one enjoys it."

Well there you go.

So we’re back to square one I guess?
