Dragons missed the boat with Hunt
by Dave Donaghy
Saturday May 29, 2004
If Dragons coach Nathan Brown had heeded the advice of scout Craig Young midway through last season, 17-year-old Broncos sensation Karmichael Hunt may well be strutting his stuff in red and white rather than maroon and gold.
Brown hesitated when told by Young to sign Hunt at any cost after the former St George coach watched him play in a schoolboys carnival in Brisbane last year.
The decision came back to haunt Brown on Friday night with Hunt scoring a crucial try early in second half in between dazzling the Dragons defence with his trademark mid-air jink.
Hunts try in the 44th minute handed the Broncos the lead for good with Stuart Kelly crossing for the match-winner ten minutes from full-time.
Hes a terrific player, Brown said.
Craig Young who scouts for us watched him play last year and said give him $80,000 (to lure him to Sydney).
I said where would we play him? And he (Young) said wing, fullback, centre, five eighth, lock doesnt matter because hell play first grade and play for Australia for the next 12 years.
