ST George Illawarra are hopeful of locking skipper Trent Barrett into a long-term contract after yesterday announcing the recruitment of a raft of new Dragons.

Chief executive Peter Doust has set his sights on locking Barrett, who is not off contract until the end of next year, away to a long-term deal.

"Hopefully we'll have something resolved in the next few weeks," he said.

Wests Tigers utility Lincoln Withers is the biggest name among the new recruits.

Withers, who can handle hooker as well as the halves, has been signed primarily as a back-up to first-choice rake Mark Riddell.

"We think he adds dimensions to us," Doust said.

"He plays a different style of hooker to Mark, which gives us some options against different teams.

"Mark has played very well this year and this is not in any way a lack of confidence in him, it's about flexibility and variation."

The Dragons have bolstered their three-quarter line by signing former junior All Blacks winger Edwin Asotasi from the Bulldogs, young Sharks speedster Nick Youngquest, South Sydney rookie Luke Roberts and Wests goal kicker John Olzard.

"They're young guys with some particular potential," Doust said.

They have also secured the services of Magpies five-eighth Clint Greenshields, ex-Warriors back rower Sala Fa'alogo and Premier League Sharks prop David Tangata-Toa, younger brother of former Dragons forward Andrew.

The Dragons have exercised an option on the services of lock Henry Perenara, and have also re-signed Premier League pivot Lachlan Russell and full-back Reece Simmonds for 2004.

Young forwards Bryan Norrie and Michael Henderson have also had their deals extended to the end of the 2005 season.

Half-back Keiran Kerr, utility Chris Nero and centre John Wilshere look like continuing their careers in England, while winger Hassan Saleh and back rower Nathan Tutt have been released.

Hooker-half Damien Bower is off contract, but could be retained when the Dragons fill the remaining "one or two" holes in their 2004 roster.

I think we will see Greenshields feature in the Dragons side next year....think about it....a Fullback, Centre and 5/8.
Good utility value that is obviously a bit of an organiser, an alright defender and has a bit of pace.
Maybe off the bench later on in the year instead of Withers if he doesnt step up.

Sounds pretty good to me, sounds like we should be a solid outfit again for next season with the key signing of Lincoln Withers amongst many heh.

The word is that Kerr and Nero are coming to Huddersfield. What can we look forward to?

Keiran Kerr was considered a half back of some potential and he possesses good speed of the mark.
He had a promising start and scored a try in his initial First Grade match in 2001 - he also kept Willie Peters in reserve grade for another match.
I thought Kerr was a great prospect but things went wrong (injuries and otherwise) and he didnt get a look-in for the rest of 2001, 2002 or 2003.

IMO, Chris Nero is a big loss for us because he seems a fairly sound player. Still hasnt reach hs potential and imo, did well coming up from the lower grades to fill in as backrower or centre when needed. He's only about 23 years old, played 7 matches in First Grade in 2003 and scored a couple of tries.

Kerr was considered an up and coming star a year or so back for the Dragons but he has been dogged by injury and since then, Brett Firman has made the number 7 jersey his own keeping Kerr in First Division.

Kerr is quick and not a bad young halfback.

Nero could of easily stayed in the NRL as he is a very good 2nd rower or centre....defends very well, but again was kept in First Division due to better players infront of him.

Thanks for that Willow and RedDragon, we'll just have to wait and see what the new coach, John Sharp, has in mind for next season - if they do come.

Perenara has been re-signed to the Dragons for 2004 only.
