The Dragons Board and Management have decided against the joint approach by the SCG Trust and NRL to move the Round 24 match against Wests Tigers to the Sydney Cricket Ground as part of the NRL’s “60s week” promotion.

The joint proposal involved a celebration and recognition of the contributions the Dragons and Wests made to rugby league in the 1960s and included a major offfield event to surround this marquee game.

There were also financial incentives offered in regards to the movement of the match day event itself.

Dragons Chief Executive Officer Peter Doust said the Board and Management considered the commercial and heritage based proposal but decided to celebrate the auspicious “60s Week” in its community heartland.

“It is always complex to evaluate viable commercial feasibilities when introducing qualitative elements such as the Dragons history and its association with the game’s history, particularly the 60s period,” said Doust.

“However, on this occasion, we believed we should respect the commitment made to five home games at Oki Jubilee in 2006 – as advertised, particularly in our Membership and Ticketing promotions since late last year.

Reasons for declining the proposal included:
- Honouring our existing commitment of five home games for our partners and members
- The financial incentives were not sufficient
- Importance of celebrating this occasion in our heartland
- The expectation that the community and members will support and embrace these local events

“It was of course disappointing that the confidential proposal found its way into the media and generated so much public debate before the matter could be fully evaluated and communicated, ” added Doust.

Dragons Chairman Warren Lockwood highlighted the importance of recognising the Dragons history in the appropriate fashion.

“We do have respect for the Dragons place in rugby league history as we do for our supporters and stakeholders,” said Lockwood.

“This is not to say that we won’t continue to evaluate commercial options to improve our business model
over time.

“Our partners, members and supporters should always be confident that the Board and Management will always consider their perspectives,” added Lockwood.

The Dragons will play their first home game of the year at Kogarah under lights against the Parramatta Eels this Friday night at 7.30pm.

Five-game membership packages and individual match tickets are still available; please visit www.dragons.com.au for further information.

The right decision has been made by the Club. It is unfortunate that it was preceded by the clanger of contemplating such a proposal in the first place.

“It was of course disappointing that the confidential proposal found its way into the media and generated so much public debate before the matter could be fully evaluated and communicated, ” added Doust.

Didn't he spill the beans on 2GB weeks ago? I recall that's when it hit the fan. Or did Ray Hadley drop it on him at the time?

Fair enough. Looks like they wanted to keep it under wraps then?

In any case, the right decision has been made in the end, and that's what's important.

The Dragons Board and Management have decided against the joint approach by the SCG Trust and NRL to move the Round 24 match against Wests Tigers to the Sydney Cricket Ground as part of the NRL’s “60s week” promotion.

A full day before the meeting to decide the issue . Maybe the Barrett news will dilute it .

Oh please

“This is not to say that we won’t continue to evaluate commercial options to improve our business model

Same time next year , maybe we won't get caught .

“Our partners, members and supporters should always be confident that the Board and Management will always consider their perspectives,” added Lockwood.
Yeah i have total confidence , yeah right sarcasm .

R2K according to some fella on Jubilee Ave Kogarah is now "licensed to hold 20,545."

Is this the case?

Would be good if it was as this would put us ahead of WIN and just a nose behind Parramatta's ground, which is widely held up by people with the "NRL criteria" mindset as the dogs bollocks of suburban grounds.

It's a shame the St George Leagues Club didn't buy some housing in the 60's and 70's around the ground itself. They could've bulldozed some places and improved the size of the ground itself, and put a sound buffer between the housing. Considering it backs onto two roads, it would have been great to have a few houses on the other sides when seeking to expand.

Not that the CEO's at the time would have forseen what would have happened in the future. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say.

Good to see this fixture is where it should be. What's the point on spending money on a footy field if it isn't going to be used. The move to the SCG should never have been suggested in the first place. Good to see they came to their senses even if it took the community to do a little "convincing".

It is GREAT news that round 24 stays local. Good work everyone who emailed and contacted the leagues club pressuring them to keep it at oki.

I'm pretty sure the ground backs onto four roads,

The Princes Highway
Jubilee Avenue
Park St
English St

(not that im trying to troll or argue)

See you all friday night on the hill. I'll be with the drunken mob.

I only thought it was two roads :(

Can't we just buy the roads and houses around them, knock 'em over and turn Jubilee into the SFS?

If only things were that simple :(

Satellite image courtesy of Google Earth. By the looks of things that photo was taken circa 2004/2005.

At the bottom you can see the Princes Highway. If we go clockwise we see Jubilee Ave, Park Street and English Street surrounding the oval.

It is now licensed to hold 20,541 (not joking about the 1). Whether they will take it to that capacity or not is another matter. However 20,000 would be comfortable.

20,541 - don't ever forget the 1... he's important too you know.

20K is tremendous. If I recall correctly, it was the magic figure that everyone was aiming for.

:D

Oh boy, that's rediculously good.

I saw the same post as Dennis over at WORL, and figured it was just someone who had got their wires crossed.
