Greece to use domestic players only.

http://www.rlef.eu.com/news/article/1127/greece-coach-names-initial-squad

Good on them but I'm not sure this is a good idea if they want to make the World Cup, since Malta will probably have at least some overseas-based players.
This is fishy to say the least. It's not only the heritage players that are missing.

Rhodes Knights and Aris Petroupolis between them provided a total of 11 players for last year's national side! What's happened to those players??

“After September’s fixtures here, we may add more players from the teams of the Attica Region or even from the new sides in northern Greece,” Ashill added.

Unsure about Rhodes though.

Trust me, something big has happened. And there is definitely no such thing as 'teams in Northern Greece'.

From that 22-man squad they've named, a grand total of TWO players (Shyti and Karefilis) player for the national team in 2014.

Again, something big has happened and this is a weak attempt at a cover up.

Disappointing to hear in that case. Although it should at least make for a good game against Spain.

NEW STRUCTURE TO GREEK Rugby League

The Board of EORL, at its meeting of 15 July 2015, approved the new structure of the period of 2015-2016 events.
More specifically: form three groups / leagues.
The first concerns the Local league Attica.
The second will be the development group, which will also involve groups of Attica and aimed at acquiring experience from new players and new teams.
The third group will be the one in Northern Greece, and League Rugby extends there.
Moreover, it has made an inquiry to form the group of women and minors group.
Finally, the management of EORL has initiated contacts with universities and the Armed Forces to form student groups.
The Group of Attica will start racing in September in order to be judged and the athletes who will staff the National Team in the Games in October.
The Gen. Secretary EORL Andreas Kolettis, said: "this is an ambitious plan. The main objective is the two groups of Attica to start soon and organized. Later we will try to Northern Greece and other groups. "

Kostas Tzevelekos (treasurer of EORL) expressed "optimism about the stabilization" while Tasos Pantazidis (Gen.Dntis of EORL) stated that "despite the problems, we continue with reasonable growth. Each obstacle for good saying. Our new big clubs support and great relief will be the geographical distribution of the games to avoid the difficulty and cost of distant travel. We continue with new wings. "

Would love to see the obviously heavily domestic players dominated Spain cause an upset over the Maltese but think experience and skill will get the red and whites home quite convincingly.

Best of luck to both teams and congrats to all who have organised this International.

Mamo is playing NSW cup grand final and I'd say Sammut would have to still play for his team this weekend.. which means they are in the squad for the Greece game you would think.. Giving Spain a hope at least!! I would like to see Spain have a win.. They grow each year and it would be great for their development

Great result for Spain. Surely favorites to go through to the WCQ now, which would be a huge learning curve for them.

Agreed, they're surely now going to progress, they've just beaten the group favourite.

It's been such a rapid rise for them. They only began Rugby League two years ago, and now could actually be headed to a World Cup!

Not sure about that, they'll probably get flogged by Russia and Serbia let alone Ireland and Wales. Good for them to be involved though if they do make it, they'll learn a lot.

Perhaps, but it's these names that are in their squad that got me thinking...

Alex O'Doutres (Palau XIII)
Cedric Bringuier (Baho XIII)
Dani Garcia, Ivan Mendez (La Reole)
Gonzalo Morro (Tonneins XIII)
Miguel Blanco (Seaton Rangers)
Andy Pilkington, Luis Thorp (Valencia Warriors)

A lot of us maybe underestimated that they too have some quality heritage players that they can call on. One player in French Elite, plus another three in Elite 2 makes a huge difference at this level.

I did some research last year, there's are a lot of Spanish heritage players in the French competitions.

Greece has withdrawn from next weekend's match v Malta due to withdrawal of two sponsors due to Greek financial crisis. Malta have been awarded the match 30 - 0. The last match in European Championship C is Spain v Greece in Greece. I assume the match will go ahead as Greece will not have to travel.
